Resident Evil 4 Remake |OT| Welcome back stranger! What are you RE-buyin'

Rolled credits. Can't say I like what they've done after the whole castle section and everything around it. I mean, the island it's not bad, but for sure not even close to what they've done before it, cuz the whole survival horror atmosphere is gone completely and what's left is mostly pure actions with a lot of shootouts, immensly annoying and forced "save Ashley sequences" while she's screaming and yelling and there's nothing you can do to make all this shit go faster in New Game or even skip it like you can a few sequences. I also hate those things you can even kill fast enough cuz you can't use the scope needed on any other weapons than rifles which zooms way too much for indoor and coridor-like environments you're in and there's nothing you can do - they could've added googles instead of scope.

Here's quick pros and cons in comparison to original:

Pros

1) Much closer to survival horror than original game ever was, even considering the whole Island location, which is the weakest part of the game
2) Way, waaaay better game/gunplay
3) Superb knife parry mechanic (sadly though, they didn't go further with it - finishers with a cost of half or even the whole durability bar for insta kills, no matter how much HP enemy has - except bosses)
4) Amazing atmosphere and mood up until the Island. Also heavy rain and loud thunder with lighting would've made atmosphere and mood even better in sections with rain and in the castle, instead we've almost complete silence
5) Much better inventory management, although I don't see the point in inventory as I almost never run out of space, which I'm sure will be even more noticeable on a harder difficulty levels with even less resources
6) Pretty much the same story, but way better shown and told via modern take completely free from campy circus of original - at sertain points after a sew a few things, I thought they're goint to do that again, but thank fuck they did it completely differently and in a way I like way more
7) Overall way supperior game in almost every way, even with the stuff I don't like
8) Great Krauser fights using knife (except when he mutates into a monster during the last fight)
9) Much better level design
10) Good puzzles
11) Not without problems, but great PC port.

Cons

1) Way too much visual BS (blood, cloths, yellow/white paints etc.) for blind and stupid people, which you can't turn off in the options (like you can in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, CAPCOM!) - mod can only do so much and can't remove all this shit from the game completely
2) For the most part Ashley and way too much forced sequences where you need to save her, while being put in the most annoying af situations you'll have to redo multiple times to minimize damage / ammo loss - it's not fun at all, it wasn't made that way to add more tention to survival horror elements and it's not effin' survival horror, it's annoying af stuff that hurts the game. You can't even tell Ashely to hide most of the time and where you can it's almost and absolutely pointless. Ugh, fuck, at least that sequence where she's destroying concrete wall is much more tolerable and there's plenty of room for you to move around and there's not unkillable things out there to annoy the fuck out of you
3) The whole Island part of the game
4) Underdeveloped and extremely limited stealth mechanics - they could've gone way further with this, especially cuz of the vertical design of some locations, but instead you can only kill enemies from behind
5) Useless and weak Bolt Thrower for stealth - limited use silencers could've done wonders and helped much more unlike this POS
6) Leon is way too slow when it comes to movement
7) Really bad, super arcady and fast boat controls with very limited camera control
8) Not fully next-gen and it shows.

Why the FUCK can't I:

1) Switch shoulders!? Whyyyyyyyyyyy!!! F! YOU!
2) Climb on certain edges (while in other places I can)!?
3) Attach laser sight to any weapon except shotguns, Killer7 (has it by default), Red9 (could not care less about it)?
4) Use some kind of move for crowd control or roll away to avoid damage/being grabbed etc. (knife can't do everything and its use is limited)?!
5) Store everything I have in the inventory to storage not matter what it is (excluding stuff which is not located in inventory - treasures, key items)? I'm not using Bolt Thrower and SMGs!

I think I haven't missed anything? Well, if I did I'll edit the post later.

Overall, I think it's my 3rd favorite RE game so far after RE1/2 remakes and 3rd being the weakes one just cuz of how much it missing in terms of original content, which was simply cut and not remade / reimagined. I even considering RE3 like a story expansion as a part of RE2 cuz of how short is, I mean, it's good, just not as good as it could've been if they would've remake the whole game and not just some parts of it. RE4 missing some stuff from original as well btw, but here I think they did the right thing, cuz what is missing is absolute pile of dog shit circus (which RE5 is full of top to bottom and RE6 is even more so) and I will never miss any of if in remake.

Hm... What do we think, lads?

It seems weird how afraid Capcom has become to show off skin. The OG dress (impractical as it was, though still iconic) was very different:

kssg300.jpg

It's OK but inferior to her default outfit and far inferior to her original dress.

I'm actually rather disappointed in everyone's alt outfit selection. Leon's mafia outfit is the only one I'll ever use other than Ashley's armor for it's practicality. Hooray for PC mods!

On Chapter 13. I decided to just pick a few weapons and max them out. I'm going to buy one more weapon and upgrade it. I'm deciding between the Killer7 and the Rocket Launcher. I already have the broken butterfly, so not sure I want to buy another magnum unless the killer7 is just that much better.

On a side note, every RE game should have this track in the document view section:

Something weird I noticed repeatedly in various areas (latest ones being immediately after rescuing Ashley on the island): enemies will turn back when you go through certain doors.

so you didn't see the multiple videos, including Digital Foundry's and NXG's, showcasing what's wrong with them then I guess lol

but Chibi Robo's aiming controls on the other hand, are indeed perfectly fine... I actually would say, aside from missing settings you'd expect in a modern game, it's perfect

Chibi Robo's controls were shit. RE4 and RE4R are perfect.

You just suck at the game and need some excuse as to why you suck. AKA:

Killer7 is way better thank BB, also, don't waste your money on the Rocket Launcher - it's just not worth it.

not sure about those aiming issues people are having, here and elsewhere. I think they're fine. The shooting range is great, just really hard. But every stage is sort of a puzzle, once you figure it out its tons of fun.

Near the end now, game is amazing but why tf can I not use the laser sight on any gun in Resident Evil 4 Remake. It is one of the most iconic things about the OG and there are a bunch of other nonsense unlockables anyway.

Which guns did you roll with?

I got the red9 maxed out but no scope! Am I missing out?

- 1st half of the game I relied on bolt thrower heavily. I sold it fully upgraded towards the end of the castle when I felt like fights were always big.

- Sentinel Nine. I get the laser sight, it looks cool as fuck, and it has 31 bullets. And the exclusive upgrade makes it extremely effective.

- Riot Gun/Skull shaker for shotgun. Been switching between them.

- Kept both Stingray and M4 for rifles. Stingray is for sniping and M4 is for big damage do something up close.

Next run I will probably do Red9 as that was my choice in the OG. I’m on HC btw.

Why is it not worth it?

Anyone else save almost all spinels for exclusive tickets? Other than maps, that’s what I’ve done.

Just finished it. Took me a total of 23 hours, on PC. What an amazing remake. Tight, linear single player game that is lengthy but perfectly paced and not boring at all? What year is it?

While the graphics weren't the best, the atmosphere and art more than made up for it. And it looked absolutely great on the OLED (G2) due to its many dark and contrasty areas.

Finally, shout out to Ashley's voice actress. She did a phenomenal job with every line and grunt and shreek they gave her.
Ashley's "This suuucks!" in the mausoleum when the armored plaga start coming alive is legit one of the best line deliveries I've ever heard in a game. Raw, real, funny and relatable. Her VA killed it overall

Not to mention echoes what the player is feeling at the moment.

im on chapter 11 (in the mines) and I have only found 6 of the little clockwork collectible guys. I've been checking every nook and cranny of the map too.. so either they are extremely well hidden or they are all hidden in later chapters of the game...
It's around 1 per chapter, if not exactly that. Their telltale squeaking is how you know you're close to one, which is how I got 11/16 on my first playthrough without a guide.

A couple of them, I would've never found without a guide as they where in areas where you're being attacked or I assumed you're meant to run through without stopping

There were a surprising number of times where I said VERBATIM what Leon said in reaction to what was around him right before he did. It was really fun to have happen. I wonder if they recorded their play-testers and then recorded Leon's dialogue based on that 😄

You actually said, “nighty-night, knights”?!

JK, I know one moment, for people who know the original RE 4 well and how headshots eventually become risky because it slightly increases the chance the tentacles might burst out, and in the remake Leon sometimes says, “I knew it” echoing our dread that our well placed headshot might backfire.

Ps5. But I understand the perceuved deadzone is due to low cam aeccleration on aim setting? I mean it feels like there is one but I had no issues getting used to it with options at default

Yeah but that's because it's a lot more responsive on ps5 compared to xbox, even with tweaks to acceleration

They've really nailed those moments IMO. RE2s Alligator scene had Leon scream "Holy shit!" in the exact same tone I did right as it happened lmao. I witnessed my friend have the exact same reaction and timing on his first playthrough too. They nail the human reactions each character has

Just hit Chapter 7. Definitely one of the best games I've played in a looong time. In my opinion it's up there with Half Life and the other greats and it would need to dive off of a cliff in quality for me to change my mind.

It's amazing how they haven't been able to recapture this in later games.
In a way it feels like a true sequel to RE4, doesnt it?

RE5 and RE6 went all in on coop action and lost that metroidvania level design. RE7 brought back some of that but still lacked the big epic setpieces and just like RE2, and Village, it was over far too soon.

REMAKE 4 just takes its time with every area and is paced to perfection. You arent constantly fighting bosses non stop like in RE5, but there is enough variety in setpieces to keep things from getting a bit too stale like they do in the Ethan carter games. And I like village a lot, but after the castle, village just cant capture the intensity of RE4's campaign.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
I finally caved and wasted all my money on the rocket launcher on chapter 15. Cant go the whole game and not try it once. Shit has 1 rocket and theres never any ammo. I'll take the L.

On the final chapter now. Great ride

I really hope the people talking about difficulty balance are playing in Hardcore or Professional because if you're on Standard and finding it too difficult, you should probably keep that info to yourself.
Just like with most survival horror games I play, I will always start with hardcore from get-go. I need to struggle in these type of games, if I don’t then there is no point.

This game has amazing boss battles and enemy variety too.

Like I said before, perfect blend of action and horror.

They retread the same environments but change the weather and time of day. Running through the rainstorm in the village was really cool looking with the wind effects

Capcom gets a 10/10 for this one from me. I only like a small handful of games this much per gen. RE4 was one of my all time favorites and this remake does it justice like no other remake I've played. It retains the visual aesthetic almost entirely, which I don't even understand how is possible. It makes the brutal murder of Demon's Souls aesthetic even more unjust and hurtful. The gameplay still feels like RE4 and the QoL upgrades are seamless. I cannot pinpoint any sections that I will dread slogging through on a replay. Every thing is tight and meaty. This product is just a flex. Hats off to these developers for completely setting the bar for all gaming remakes before and after.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Just doesn't hit the same without this track

It's in Extras>Original Sound Track
It's £2.50 but it's worth it.
Or you can buy the Extra DLC pack for £15.99

I can’t agree with the DS slander, but do everything else

The game definitely has a tonal shift from the original, much darker for instance, and it improves things imho

I’m one of the few who never played the original. I was going to play through it last year, but then the remake was announced. I decided to wait.

For me it was an entirely new experience, and a fantastic and memorable one at that. I definitely get hype now. I wish I would have played it back on GameCube.

As it stands, I think it deserves its spot among the best game of all time. I finished it and immediately started another play through.

Well, I just can't see any reason to buy it for 80000K instead of upgrading stuff. I also can't think of a situation in the game where I would've used it - you can do just fine without it using conventional weapons, also - huge grenades can make a difference too - they're much more powerfull than small ones and have AOE fire effect.

Anyone else save almost all spinels for exclusive tickets? Other than maps, that’s what I’ve done.
That's mostly what I did, but had to buy something else and only unlocked 2nd exclusive upgrade when I started NG+ on Hardcore - you can buy one for 30 again almost right from the start.

I beat it.

Great remake. Lots of fun. Generally very respectful to the original. Parrying is great, some great lines added even if some are dropped, and at least easter eggs references are provided for things that got removed. Changes to characters (for the most part) tend to elaborate on what was already hinted at in the original which is excellent. So characters like Louis or Krauser are really just fleshed out instead of changed, in an era where every movie, show and game in the world is being remade, often badly, that's a pleasant surprise.

I really think I goofed by getting the bolt thrower though. I can't resist the obsession of being super efficient with every shot, always saving ammo, so I kill as many people as possible with the slow clunky bolt thrower. However it feels like drops are based your level of need, so when I do things this way it just feels like less ammo drops, but it's really hard for me to resist the temptation to stop doing it because I'm such an ammo tight-ass. I'll try to put the bolt thrower down so I can use more fun weapons.

I don't know if I want to do these crazy hard runs to get high ranks but I'll at least play through some higher difficulties while I wait for Mercenaries to come out.

Broken butterfly worth it? Just got to the merchant and see it has a discount

Should I pump upgrades into it or are there better magnums?

On my 4th playthrough now, this will be the toughest one, new save file on Professional. At least you get to use unlocked bonus weapons/accessories and you will absolutely need it. Plan is to get upgrade ticket for Chicago Streetsweeper as soon as it's available which gives infinite ammo, should happen around ch.8. Will use golden egg on Salazar and buy a rocket launcher for Saddler, even the odds a bit.

Currently on ch.4, tricky balancing act having to do merchant quests for spinels to upgrade + finding treasure to buy stuff but still trying to move through every area as swiftly as possible with minimal delay. My understanding is it must be cleared in less than 5h30m for the S+. I've got 86% of the trophies already, if I manage to do this I'll just have to do a run with no healing and a couple of misc trophies like clock tower lift.

Finished it. I had so much excess cash, I just killed the final boss in one hit with the rocket launcher.

Does anyone here remember anything about the original RE4 ending? I only beat it once and didn't play it since the original Gamecube version. But I could have sworn:

You get rid of the parasite in a cave, not a special lab room. I remember running through a cave and the machine being in a cave and you remove it. Also, I could have sworn you get the sample because you extract it from yourself and you're carrying it and you drop it and Ada steals it from you. And in the original she wasn't as nice and friendly at the end she mocks you as she flies off in the chopper and Leon is pissed.

Did I remember all of that wrong? Because if I didn't, this remake did it quite differently. But maybe I just remembered it all wrong.
