I'll just leave this here, I'm sure people will draw their own conclusions out of it:

People just go totally crazy over the craft part.

It's just so incredibly tacky when stylishness is disconnected [from substance/the rest of the work].

しょうがないね。アニメに何かを期待するだけ無駄。作り手にも受け手にも。
Well, whatever. It's futile to expect anything from anime. That goes both for the creators and the viewers.

Must be a result of people being coddled by the internet. All these people online just wag their tails and forget what they should be doing.

But, you know, it'd be hilarious if people who were wildly praising the exploits of Mr. Dezaki are praised anime today.{whoops got that wrong when I skimmed it, but whatever}

Project A-ko!

The Project A-Ko commentary is pretty fascinating in a way. There's a pretty surprising number of famous or semi-famous people who worked on that movie, and for a few of them it was pretty much the only actual animation work they ever did.

So, regarding Lupin... the animation production is credited to both TMS and a studio called Po10tial. Anyone have any idea what this studio is?

I am going to go against the grain here and say that I was a little bit disappointed with this production. It didn't have the finely crafted mood and well rounded stortelling of Onjiisan no Lamp or the kinetic, amazing animation and loveable characters of Kizuna Ichigeki.

For those who haven't seen it, it's very similar to the film Animal Treasure Island (1971) - which even less people have seen. It's about a kid who gets entangled with some pirates because he has an old map that they want and all the wacky adventures that ensue from such a set-up.

It's good clean fun for all the family, which is more than I can say for most anime titles these days but I didn't feel particularly attached to any of the characters. I know the running time wasn't particularly long but that's no excuse. I don't really think the addition of the 'trio' of characters served the story very well either because they were so underdeveloped and largely irrelevant to the main plot. It seemed like they had too many characters for the amount of time that was available for them to fill.

This wouldn't really be a problem if the cinematography wasn't so...eh. There's lots of very traditional, very flat camera work and the animation doesn't really stand out at any point, even during the handful of action scenes that we witness.

One thing that I did unreservedly approve of was the background art and colour scheme:

I haven't actually seen it but it clicked in my head while I was watching Buta because of the review/impression that you posted a while back.

Now curious..

Typical late-night animegaf discussion involves debates about the feasibility of implementing a playoff system for the BCS, or the problem of water conservation in southern California. Sometimes we go hog-wild and talk about the upcoming election, or go a step further and lament the slow death of literature.

I guess having that UK domain has done some magic. I don't think anything or at least much of the shows licensed by Crunchyroll isn't available in the UK. Saint Saiya being the biggest surprise.

Upotte!! isn't. I have a nasty feeling that they may have gotten the majority of those shows with wide availability out of the way first...

You make valid points. I don't think Buta is as good as Kizuna or Lamp - although I do think it's better than the other two shorts from last year. I was willing to accept the characters at face value for the purposes of this short, but there's no denying it was a shallow and not particularly memorable affair.

I was surprised by how little animation there was, considering the purpose this project is supposed to serve. I was expecting them to do more elaborate action scenes, but even when there were fights they cut away a fair bit to static reaction shots, such as in the bar. The choreography of the action we did see wasn't anything special. A bit of a letdown there. I agree that the background art was by far the best part of the production.

I've written about the Devilman OVA from 1987 previously, mostly to talk about how totally insane it is, but at the same time I really wanted to get people to watch it because I wanted them to experience it in all it's grotesque beauty. In particular, I had always been impressed by the sequence which opens the OVA.

Now Ben from AniPages has put together a post that goes into great length (as Ben is want to do) detailing all the staff who worked on the staff, including a number of Ghibli animators.

Now, I never realised that so many talented animators had worked on this project, or that some of them were from Ghibli. If you ever want to see what a horrendously gory Studio Ghibli movie might look like, check out Devilman: The Birth. It's this good -

The dream of home ownership in Japan isn't what it used to be.

A solid episode, although there wasn't much progress plot-wise, we got additional characterization for the leads, and humanization of the refugees with the same stone. It was a clever use of parallelism.

You're not supposed to scare them off before they've gotten a taste of the salt...

I like this new villain, he's such a schemer, unlike the pure Nephrite.

One day, Usagi wakes to discover an actual love letter in her mailbox, from her very own dear Tuxedo Mask!

At first I thought a villain had finally come up with a good plan,
but then it's revealed that Nephrite had just sent letters to everyone except the poor teacher. Villains are forever dumb in magical girl shows, since the teacher is clearly the hottest girl in the show. :(

However, it isn't Usagi who falls for the Trap, it's Naru!
And to make it even worse, there's the ugly Tuxedo Mask cosplay!

ZLRq5.jpg

Now this is just unforgivable

Usagi, of course, comes to rescue her friend, but when she transforms, something very strange happens to Mamoru.

This isn't the first time we've seen signs that Not Tuxedo Mask isn't everything he pretends to be. His encounter with Nephrite, and Tuxedo Mask's statement that he remembers Sailor Moon from long ago both point to him possibly being connected to the Princess, or the Dark Kingdom.

Of course, Rei once again manages to steal the show, my heart was unprepared for cold-mask moe~

Sailor Moon 01

So begins the journey...

I watched some of Sailor Moon before, but it was dubbed by DiC on Cartoon Network or whatever. Basically I'm saying I have never actually watched this show as it was intended, and the dub doesn't fucking count.

So here we are. Usagi is a crybaby. Pretty much what I expected. Still don't like her. probably never will.

Anyway, Usagi's mom is a blue haired MILF. So that's a good start.

Usagi is late for school like she seems to be every day. Asking for expulsion, Usagi.
She happens upon
a group of kids picking on a small cat. She picks up the cat and peels a bandaid off its head. Poor thing. But what's this? a crescent marking!
OH SHIT STILL LATE FOR SCHOOL!
Well her test grades are failure too. Usagi = fail. Get used to this.
Cut to
the evil lair of Queen Beryl. She sees stuff going on with lots of...I dunno people energy or something. she wants this because she's evil and thats what evil people want. she summons her servant, Jadeite to gather people's energy.
Usagi goes outside of a store to ponder how much of a failure she is follwed by her friend Naru (lol Molly), and
angrily throws her crumpled up test score behind her, naturally hitting a guy on the head. He calld her Dumpling head, which based on the dubs, he calls her dozens of times in the future.
Usagi passes by a Sailor V poster, which ironically contains a much more superior Senshi.
Oh wait, I'm not supposed to know this yet. Well it doesn't matter anymore.
So anyway, she goes home and her MILF asks about her test grade. LOL.
She promptly kicks her out of the house like any good self-respecting mom would do to a failure.
Meanwhile
Jadeite begins stealing people's energy. Naru's mom is apparently a youma sent to steal energy to help Jadeite. So I guess its NOt actually Naru's mom.
Meanwhile,
Usagi apparently has been allowed back in the house. The cat, Luna, finds her and shows her the transformation pendant.
ITS MAHOU SHOUJO TIME!!! Usagi transforms into Sailor moon, which is a slightly less shitty version of her.
She goes to the party where people's energy is being stolen. At first she doesn't do anything but cry, because she sucks. Tuxedo Kamen shows up with his trademark rose and distracts the Youma. Sailor moon uses Moon tiara to ruin the youma's shit.
Later, the girls at school talk about a dream they had where Sailor moon saved the day. well that definitely doesn't seem very realistic to be fair.

I feel like I'm being pretty critical today, but that's just the way it turned out.

I actually enjoyed Zetman and Buta but there were a number of problems I felt that I felt needed to be addressed.

You finally started! Yay! Don't hate on Usagi, she's not that bad, and her faces are hilarious. :(

Redheaded loli Ami is so cute~

It's time for a beach episode!

Usagi's fantasies of her male harem are always funny, it branched out beyond Motoki and Tuxedo Mask this time!

Next comes the single greatest moment to date in Sailor Moon:

After that, the rest of the episode paled in comparison, though the monster animation was really cool. I didn't like the moral in this episode at all,
"Child abuse is ok so long as you apologize afterwards!"

Why is everyone watching Sailor Moon?

The force of momentum. Once you get a number of people posting positive things about a show, especially a well known 'classic' like Sailor Moon, it's hardly suspriring that you'll see others follow suite.

*Insert pshycobabble about humans following the ways of the herd here*

Nothing wrong with being critical. It makes for more interesting discussion than simply describing the plot or getting excited over how cute something is.

Now is as good a time as any. I have been wanting to start it forever. I wanted to see CCS first though. That being done, time to dig in!
