Even though I think quality animation is genuinely a important thing in anime. I think good enough writing can overcome "average" animation quality in cases of Crest of the stars and Spice and wolf but it's not something that happens regularly at all (or should at all), since most anime writing sucks anyway.:)

So writing is not important except when it is. Gotcha.

I'm still not sure about the link between magical girls and magical girlfriends though.

You don't generally find magical girls tied down to some man because they're busy doing other things!

Also, there's always the potential for the creators of those works to exploit their characters by injecting their works with lesbian subtext, usually in an attempt to pander to the male audience.

hmmm was wondering.... has there ever actually been any good in game anime cutscenes?

All the one's I've seen/remember have been... pretty meh quality.

i'm gonna be a lazy piece of shit and just link you to the tvtropes page so you can get some idea of this terrible cliche
This is disappointing.

Firstly, you're linking to a TVTropes page rather than writing a proper explanation.

Secondly, you're labelling this particular character as a 'terrible cliché' when we all know that the value of the work tends to lie in it's execution and not it's originality. Just about everything has been done before, usually several times over.

Lan is Madoka's magical girlfriend, for instance.

Emiya Shirou's canonical appearance. It's not terribly complicated, so I'm not sure how they fucked his face up so bad in the F/SN anime, especially considering how much better his face looked in the UBW movie.

I think a another factor is at play here, like the effort put in by the staff of their respective productions, I mean crest / banner series is pretty much staffed by nobodies with the exception of a above-average director, yet they clearly did the best job they could with the talent they had. Now compare that to say Blade of the immortal which has great source material with lazy-as-fuck beetrain trademark animation and direction, and it's just a terrible anime to watch, despite how good the source material is.:3
Are you implying that Aria has good writing?
Aria in general has good direction though, it's a shame the art and animation can't do it justice.>:

Are you trying to tell me that's the good version? Also what is going on with his legs.

No, Magical Girlfriend is a terrible cliche, and just because your English teacher tells you everything is a cliche already does not make it so.

Your counter-point here: No, it is a terrible chicle because I say so.

Well, I am not convinced.
H&C has an insufferable faux-loli in it

What do people have against Hagu? She's do dessu uguu aruuu!

Perhaps it's the creepy way that everyone in the show fights for her as well.

Also Aria is like a Terrence malick film if it had ugly cinematography, I mean naval-gazing is good and all, but what's the point of it, if you are gazing at ugly environments? >:

It's tautological, yes.

While Aria is a nice, relaxing show to watch in small doses, I can't say it has particularly noteworthy writing. The characters aren't fleshed out, the dialogue isn't interesting, and the narrative doesn't go beyond your average sentimental inspirational sort of stuff, like you might see in a Hallmark Channel movie. Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying that.

Seems like a pretty generic design to me. Literally nothing is notable about it. I can't even call it stupid or anything like that because I need to have something notable about it before I can comment on it!

VN protagonists usually have bland designs, maybe because it doesn't really matter when you almost never see them.

Good for you, I don't really care. Not like you mounted any defense or argument to respond to.

I stated that originality need not be the ultimate goal and that the execution of ideas is extremely important, which is why it doesn't need to be a 'terrible cliché'.

Nah, it's an excuse bad writers use to propagate their creativity-starved garbage. Everything is a cliche, therefore my unoriginality is acceptable, etc. Like "show, don't tell," it seems to catch on with people for some reason. Stupid memes.
Oh yeah, I'll agree with that.

As for "show, don't tell", that's actually a good rule of thumb to follow!

Simple and clean. I like you.
Be my waifu. :3

Well, I come from it as a former fan of science fiction looking for something to counteract the trend of nihilism found in today's literature, television, film and video games. To me, its positivity and utopian outlook on life is precisely why I've seen the series four or five times now.
I also enjoyed the world building, even if it was just Venetian tourist porn. But that's because I watch stuff like No Reservations and The Amazing Race.

Writing > animashion.
I dunno how you can say that, when your most recent favorite anime Anonatsu was saved by it's animation and direction, and you know not it's script / writing which is pretty average when taken on it's own, but combined with those other aspects, it became better than any right it had to be.:3 then again I've seen you sing praises on Anonatsus writing for some reason.:lol

AnoNatsu is good television. Without a script, it's just a series of boobs mixed in with images of Kanna crying.

If you feel this way about "show, don't tell" you should watch Bodacious Space Pirates.
I had forgotten all about that until you brought it up. :(

I know posting from evaforums lol but it's put out much clearer and more succinctly than anything I can write at one a.m.

It's a different interpretation to a scene that always stood out to me for its lack of explanation.

The amount of inferences being drawn from extremely limited evidence in that post is fairly emblematic of the problem with places like EvaGeeks. They've studied the material more closely than the creators and therefore end up filling in any gaps in the shows logic or structure with their own pet theories.

Sounds like the Mass Effect 3 fanbase.
