I must suck really bad because I can't seem to do it and Noel's is hardly hard to do it. I have the dpad pattern down but I must suck at pressing the drive button.
You can double-check your button presses by going into training mode and turning on the input display. It will show all of your directional presses and button presses. You should know right away if you're doing it right. The only thing it doesn't show you is your timing. If the presses are all correct, then it's your timing.

I still suck at this game, but slightly less than when I started. I can get some very basic combos in for Noel and Jin, but not very long ones and not very consistently. Getting there, though.

I'm finally realizing that "beginner" rooms are a trap. Never trust anyone in this game who calls themselves a beginner. They never actually mean it!

Maybe you're not performing the motion fast enough?

I forget if there's a way to view your inputs in Training. That might help, since Blazblue is a bit stricter with the inputs than some other games. You did mention that you're getting the dpad pattern, but I figure it couldn't hurt just in case.

Haven't play this game in a while, holding off til I get a good tv since playing BB on my crappy 19" CRT is a pain on the eyes :/ My friend has a panny g10 and the game looks sextastic on it.

Yeah my timing must be really off. I toggled on the input display and everything looks fine but no cigar.

I do actually like the game and really have never had the drive to actually learn a fighter. Is an arcade stick really needed for this game ,as right now I'm just playing with the good old controller.

I really think you're not doing the motion fast enough, then. It's harder to do consistently when you're new to 2D fighters. I think the timing on the button press is a little more lenient. I generally press it just as the motion ends... or right after the motion. It's hard to say because I never pay attention to my fingers now. :lol

As with every fighting game, you don't need a stick. The majority of competitive players do use sticks, but it's not a requisite. There are plenty of competitive fighters who use pads. Just stick with what you're comfortable with.

Although, if you're really looking to go to tourneys and stuff, you may want to get into stick usage early because the transition from pad to stick is a little rough once you're used to the pad.

You should do fine for most stuff with the controller, but an arcade stick makes it alot easier to pull off any 360 or 720 rotations in some movesets (Tager for example).

Also, if BB is your first fighter and you like it, you may be tempted to try out some more fighters and put an arcade stick to good use. Alot of people call this the "year of the fighter" for good reason, alot of great stuff already out and still on the way.

Quick question: Are PS3 servers region-locked? Say, if I get the japanese version, will I be able to play with people using the US version and so on?

Edit: Nvm, Seems like it's not.

I'm with you. I never felt the need to really learn a fighter until this game. Not sure why.

The big bonus for me in transitioning to a stick was rescuing my left thumb. I'm far from a good player, but I'm just too old and crotchety to be ok with using that d-pad and giving myself blisters after extended play sessions. Besides, I figured if I was going to spend the time learning how to play a fighter for real, I should learn to do it with a stick. But most of the people I've played online are using a pad (most of whom kick my ass), so it's definitely not necessary.

As a bang player what am I supposed to do against Nu? They get one hit off and there goes half my life. Burst does nothing because she positions herself out of the burst range. I try to use my nails to stuff her attacks, but she recovers to cast and all her C attacks are to fast and they combo.

I played a good 10 rounds with a good Nu yesterday and it was frusterating.

Her weakness is distance: close in, and her neutral D attacks won't hit you (the ones that travel low and horizontally). Of course, depending on the player, they'll assume you know this already and will be prepared with some anti-air measures, like down C (it's her physical blades hitting diagonally) or forward D (makes the energy blades travel slightly upwards).

Honestly, the best thing to do is play as characters whom you don't know how to fight: go into Training and just mess around. It will help.

I thought it was pretty fun that we ended up in 3 Rachel mirror matches on Random last night. :lol Gorgeous battles indeed. :D

After countering, I could never get Rachel to dash forward. Not sure if there was some sort of input delay or unbufferable period during/after the counter, or if I was just not going fast enough with my stick. I think I could have put up a bit more of a fight if I could have capitalized more on those counters.

You were absolutely smoking me when it came to using your lobelias and George effectively.

hey Akachan... we haven't played for days/weeks and you dare judge me on my costume color when I have changed it?!?!

Anyway, the lobelia setups gets me in trouble sometimes... Jin's DD and Noel's DD come to mind... though I'm getting better at it (no more air DDs for you, Kiunch!)

But man, a good Jin really throws me off the loop... those freezes make me panic. I don't remember exactly who I played with yesterday but he was beating on me once he froze me.

they should at least get the lingo correctly... instant cancel??? it's RAPID!

edit: I don't get the comic

It's also not possible, since you need 100% Heat to go into a Astral Finish, 50% of which would be used up when performing a Distortion Drive and the other 50% of which would be used up by performing a Rapid Cancel.

But I still get it and I love Penny Arcade. :D

i'm having some problems with Rachel...

going from 5B -> 6A -> 5B, for whatever reason always ends up 5B -> 6A -> 6B when I go into an actual match so I can't chain into an air combo...i have no problems in training mode :| any advice or with lag, is my release of the joystick from 6 to 5 not being recognized quickly enough?

also, why do people get upset when you do an astral finish? i've gotten more hatemail after an astral finish than all other messages combined :|

Because they feel so dumb that they got caught in a astral finish

there's actually a pretty big time gap between 6A and 5B, so after inputting 6A, let go of joystick, wait about .5 sec and then press B

Try going into training with input on

shhh Graham I'm still compiling this Radiant map
I got caught in Rachel's astral once. I was getting beat down, near the end he pushed me into the corner, George'd me and while shocked I ate the astral. It was actually the first time I had played against another Rachel online, and I was really impressed, his play was nearly flawless. So afterwards I sent him a message saying gg, he's a beast, and I was glad to finally see another Rachel instead of the usual Noel / Jin / Ragna players. He replies, in completely broken Engrish, saying thanks but he still felt he had much to learn as he just got the game, but was determined to be the "storngest" Rachel online, "becourse she so lovly to look at." Awesome.

Yo Prototype, thanks for the PSN add. Hopefully will see you on sometime this weekend, looking forward to some Rachel fun.

Rachel is lovely to look at! I feel like such a lolicon pedo by saying that. :lol

I wish they threw more of her insults into the match though.

"I see those ostentatious glasses do you no good. Perhaps they would serve you better forcebly inserted into your mouth."

"Gii, shut your mouth before I remove it from your face."

She's such a little bitch. :lol

well, dunno about Rachel, the character herself, but a well executed Rachel combo is pretty elegant compared to other characters, imho

Oh yeah I met a Litchi online, haven't played one since Kyori. Still no Carl, level 32 (or 31 I forget) and still going Carl-less!

Also a Rachel who didn't know how to use traps, a Rachel who did (Proto's Rachel helped me win that one!), and two Nu's that knew nothing of using sword attacks.

Sorry Guilty... I'm probably not going to be able to play this weekend... Maybe a little bit after work today.

I might go to an arcade in the valley this Saturday though. They have BB there :D

How is Nu what?

Nu is V-13. It's not really V, it's just a Greek letter for Nu.

v (Nu) is also the 13th letter of the greek alphabet.

Why do I do better in ranked matches compared to player matches? Is it because most of the top players are sticking to player matches? Even when my opponents are higher level, I feel like I'm winning a lot more in ranked matches. I get routinely shat on in player lobbies, but I can get (short) winning streaks going in ranked matches.

Anyone else notice this?

I finally bought this (360) after waiting on Gamefly waaaayyy too long. I was ...average at GGX at best, but I'm super excited to jump into this. XBL Gamertag: Apistat. I probably won't play too much online at first while I get used to the basics, hell, I haven't even decided who to even start with, but I really look forward to getting my pride demolished soon enough.

I was mostly a Chipp player on GGX, so while I know the characters are quite different, who's more of an agile/speed character? As for characters I'm at least a little familiar with, I'm really interested in Arakune but he seems incredibly complicated for someone as rusty as I am. There's just an incredible amount of information in this thread, so I apologize for my noobish queries.

Anyone else think Rachel Alucard looks like Shinku from Rozen Maiden? Especially with Red color

yeah...it would have even been more so if Carl's voice actress was used for Rachel :p

I got the game 4 days ago. After 4 days of single player i decided to check out the online. Got assraped for 10 straight matches. After 10 matches and lots of tears i was able to beat some level 30ish guy. I guess after he saw me being a level 1 he tried a different character and i was able to beat him. My level is now 7 thanks to that guy. I think i'm going to retire since it is all downhill from here.

Jin is such a crutch. Every time I think I have a new character (I've gone from Noel to Arakune to even messing around with Ragna) I always get pulled back into that Ice Car...

THIS IS NO FUN AT ALL

GAF, pick a character for me, please.
