As a terrible player, I don't think I even want to attempt playing Carl -- ever. He looks like a character built for the most hardcore of the hardcore. I mean that in the sense that if someone plays him, he is going to tear your ass apart. Get caught in between him and Nirvana? You're fucked by both of them. Try to high or double jump over Nirvana to get to Carl who's hiding behind Nirvana? You're fucked by that air-clap move.

Moral of the story: you're fucked.

That's actually part of the reason I'm almost relieved to have yet to fight a Carl online...if they're willing to use him online, they probably know how to kick my ass with him. :lol

I've got the replay but I wasn't able to record. I can do a cam video if necessary but it'll have to wait 'til tommorow. Do bad the voice chat wasn't saved. :lol

I've got a copy on my end, but no recording equipment. I don't even know if I'd be able to handle the shame of watching that again :lol

Seriously wish I had the audio from that... oh god. I haven't laughed that hard in months.

I guess I finally want to give the guys from Aksys Games and Arc System Works a shout out and a thank you. This game is glorious. Thanks for localizing it and putting together such a nice LE package together for us.

I'm feeling like a jackass for having ignored GG now. If it plays anything like BB, I'd be willing to give it a chance. The art style of GG was really the only thing putting me off. BB is really no different, but the hypetrain got me to bite on BB. Hopefully Sega Sammy's GG (if it ever happens) can offer something up to BB/GG fans.

I'd like to see Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus get a budget priced port to 360/PS3 with online, but that seems unlikely. Being on PS2 and offline really hurts it.

Sure they do. If you can FADC Sagat can dominate most of the other characters in SF4 and it isn't even that hard to do, until someone better comes along, but thats hardly the point.

Off blowing crap up! At least I was. In any case tho, yeah. That's usually the case and there's only one big room going on in game. Where is everyone!

Um no. SF4 is one of the most balanced fighting games out. Being able to FADC doesnt mean your a sure fire win with Sagat. Tiers really don't matter unless you are doing some high level tournament play and even then there is always ways around it.

Anybody new looking for someone to fool around and learn the ropes with, or and GAFers perhaps want to take it easy and teach me a bit about the game?

GT: PetriesLastWord

First fighting game to grip me at all in years, so I'd like to learn it better so I don't feel like abandoning it due to lack of ability.

I'm pretty terrible, but I have a decent grasp on the game and could let you in on what I know, if you'd like.

I haven't seriously played a fighting game since Tekken 2 on PS1 (and some Soul Caliber 2 on GC), so I feel like I'm learning a new language from scratch here! Any general tips for beginning players? The included DVD seems geared toward seasoned fighting game vets.

I love the style and feel of the game, but I suck donkey nuts.

Well, I went into training a bunch with Jin. Finally got the 6C ->-> 5C -> 9 -> j.B j.C -> 9 -> j.B j.C j.D down for the most part... but landing in an actual match is another story. However, I can never seem to hit with the j.D at the end (where they get frozen). I always fall too far down for them to get hit by it. Is it just a matter of tightening up my timing or something? I did it over and over again and I thought I got the hits out as early as possible, but obviously I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I need to get a counter hit somewhere?

Oddly enough, I think Jin might slowly be becoming my new main character over Arakune. I really like Arakune's character design (and he's so delightfully insane), but after playing for a few days I still haven't really figured out how to make the best use of him, while with Jin I actually feel like I'm making some progress. When playing Arakune I try so hard to get a curse on them, and then I don't really know what to do from there other than try and fill the screen with as many random bugs as possible :lol. Who knows though, the game's still pretty new. Maybe I'll try and pick up Arakune seriously after I get more comfortable with the game in general (i.e. I'm still an arcade stick nub who needs a lot more practice.)

Being one of the most balanced fighting games out isn't saying much considering the gradual updating essential to balancing other multiplayer genres is absent from most of them.

Sagats frequent canceling into ultras is bullshit, period. He can do it from a bloody roundhouse, whereas other character have no way to combo into their ultras at all. Considering how much damage his ultra does and how good his character is anyway if you can FADC into ultra you'll beat just about everyone at your own skill level or even a bit better than you.

But this isn't a thread about SF4, just that for some characters tier lists and dominance in regular games is completely universal.

You're supposed to do B, C, jump, C, D.

B, C, D at the end of that combo only works on some characters, like tager. I think you do more damage by leaving out that extra B anyway.

If you still don't land the D, try: f.C, dash, jumping A, B jump B, C, D.

Say what?
Probably more than half the characters *can* "combo" into their ultra.
Heck, if you want to talk about being able to easily land your ultra, Ryu is way worse than Sagat.

Can someone tell how playable this is with a pad? (PS3 here)

I no longer have a stick. I got tired of the SF4 online mode and sold it with my stick. Now I am regretting it but have no money for a new stick. Didn't think I could get interested in Blazblue.

very playable. you only need the four buttons. the action is so hectic though, your fingers might get cramped up fast.

Ok, I'm getting this game later today on PS3 and I would like anyone who plays online to add me to their friends list. Don't care if you're a master or a scrub or anywhere inbetween, as long as I got people to play with.

EDIT - I decided not to get this for financial reasons

EDIT 2 - Fuck money! It was meant to be spent on good things so I'm picking up this game tomorrow.

PSN - Shearie

Online is buttery smooth, outside of some small lag synch'ing things up before the actual action starts. No issues with lag here in Canada, and I've played people from Japan.

The versions seem identical so far. If you have a stick, it really doesn't matter. I'd go for PS3 if you're playing with a controller/dpad though. Aside from that, it's basically online friend preferences really.

Good options too. Loser swaps out, winner swaps out, and I think a random swap. You can edit settings to (dis)allow "Unlimited" characters, "Astral Finishers," and so on.

While not having an HDTV is killing me right now, I think I might grab an HD monitor just for this game. It plays great on an SDTV, but I think this game begs for 720p.

I can imagine the perfect set up now...
17" HDTV on my computer desk
360 beside it, BB in the disk tray
Stick sitting in front

BANKRUPTCY FINNNNISHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

So, BB will be a... hmm...

$120 MadCatz Stick
$80 BlazBlue LE
$200 17" HDTV
$400 purchase

Any idea on a European release? It's not even region fre Q___Q.

I don't think anythings been announced, Aksys don't publish in Europe but 505 Games might pick it up for release like they did with Battle Fantasia. Anyways, hurrah for region-free on the PS3, otherwise i'd be in the same predicament as you ;)

Hmm, just cleared arcade and story 100% with Noel aka "lacking lady" :lol . I can see why she's considered newbie friendly its like easy multi hit combos. I can't get the input for her Astral Heat down anyone know?

Ditto. I would've bought the Xbox 360 version otherwise, but being an european, I really had no choice. And I don't mind - it's going to kick my ass regardless. :)

Yeah, they fucked up the input for Noel's Astral Finish in the command list.

It's actually down, B, B, B, up B...I think. It's super easy to pull off and it actually combos off of one of her drive combos, lol.

As for the Sagat stuff, it's really hard to argue that he wasn't a blatant oversight by Capcom. You could say the same for Ryu, but heck he's the main character. The problem with Sagat (and to a lesser extent Ryu) is that there is no trade off for the easy mode ultra. Sagat's ultra does MASSIVE damage whether it connects fully or not, which is laughable considering how easy it is to land. Logically an easy to combo super/ultra should be low damage at the very least. Capcom should've figured this out after Chun Li in 3rd Strike. On top of that he's got amazing health, the most useful kara in the game, a freaking throw that totally resets your spacing and the most effective projectile and anti-air game. Oh, and he has an overhead and super high priority on most of his moves. Compare that to, say, Rose. Guile. Fei Long. Sakura. Dan. Cammy. Vega. Those characters have absolutely no chance given two equally skilled players. That's why I roll my eyes when people harp about the balance of SF4. Yeah it's balanced: in the arcades in Japan where everyone picks Ryu, Sagat, Zangief, Balrog (boxer), Sim and Viper. You can have a little parity there. But there are more handicapped matchups in SF4 than in any SF I can remember.

I totally agree. Despite a few errors in editing (Noel's Astral being wrong, typo on the back of the box), this totally feels like a game made with love. It's like the fighting game equivalent of homemade cookies fresh out of the oven. May not be the best cookies ever but you just appreciate it for the work that went into it. Only thing for me is I'm still not too interested in Guilty Gear. The air combos were too much.

I pulled an (almost) all-nighter last night and FINALLY finished Score Attack mode with Jin. Man, Unlimited Ragna is a total ass! He can heal a ton of life with various attacks, especially Carnage Scissors, and he'll use the Azure to instantly kill you if he hits. Luckily, he has to be at close range to do that and you can stop him before it hits with low A's. You'll recognize the move, as the screen turns to the distorted blue background and the starting frame looks like he has red claws.

So, sorry for those whose invitations I ignored as I was trucking my way through. :lol But now I'm FREEEEE!!

Well, Sagat is God-Tier no doubt, and I agree that his HK to ultra his way too easy/damaging for the good of the game, yet he's no way "impossible" to beat.
For the moment there is no impossible match-ups, not one 8-2 or worse in the tiers list yet: we'll see as time flies by and as the tiers get "deeper", but *for the moment* SF4 is way more balanced than 3.3 or 2X.
But, yeah, Sagat does need a little nerfing.

Anyhoos, don't want to derail the thread anymore than that, so onto the subject: any advices for a very crappy player beginning with Rachel? : /

I'm beginner mode too but Rachel was the first character I picked. My advice: pick Unlimited Rachel. lol, but seriously mix setting traps (frog & pole) with rush downs so you don't get Negative penalties, practice using the wind to further your attacks. A few of her moves can be continued if you hold the button down while using the wind.

So for story mode, does every copy of the game have Tager's title as "Blind Warrior" and Bang's title as "Belief"? I looked at the completion guide on Dustloop and the titles are switched. It makes sense considering the story of both characters. It's just a little nitpick I'd like to point out if they made a mistake.

The Dustloop guide has a few errors so I wouldn't be surprised

Edit: Yup, Tager = Blind Warrior
Bang = Belief

Huh... I thought I remember seeing Aksys saying the 360 version will be region free so import when people asked if other countries will get the spiffy LE package. Weird that it isn't.

Anyway, I've put in a few hours into this so far, and I'm quite liking it. Nu is definitely going to my character of choice (I like the zoning mechanic, and wings of swords? OMG YES). Online has been pretty good - the lag at the beginning of each match is annoying, but once the round actually starts it seems mostly fine. Very first round I played online was with someone who bitched about *my* connection preventing him from doing things after I beat him and kicked me from the room :)lol ), but most people seem to be good, or at least good sports (I'm assuming being on PSN instead of XBL helps :D )

One thing I wonder though is what's with the replays? Every single replay I've tried to save so far as come up as "Failed to load data" when I try to watch them.

Rachel plays differently from any character in a fighter I've ever seen. She can be a REAL pain to deal with if the player knows how to set up her traps. I got schooled by a great level 28 Rachel last night, and everything was so meticulously set up that the first mistake I made was all it took; I was done. I wish I'd thought to save a replay of it.

I hate that damned frog. :(

Get very used to Pumpkin to initiate combos or to bait a block. One thing to keep in mind, Rachel's basic movement is pretty slow. You definitely want to get used to approaching with Silpheed pushing you to bridge the distance faster than normal when you're attacking. 6A is your anti-air and combos nicely to an aerial combo either by jumping after them or 6C + 8D. For ground, your primary poke is 6B due to the speed and range of it. Try to punish counter hits with D + 6C or 3C (hold C for more hits) and keep them in the corner as long as possible.

Personally, a fan of D + 3C (hold C), 5CC, 214A to keep them in the corner or a more aggressive 6DC, j.C, 5B, 6DC, 6C, 5CC, 214A. Just a pain to execute that without giving them a chance to counter the jumping attack between the two 6Cs so I'd say get comfortable with the first combo more. Initiate it with whatever you want, though the preference is off a counter hit from 6B or from hitting them with a Pumpkin.
