The Nintendo Switch 2 | Officially Announced (Switch 2 Direct Scheduled for April 2nd)

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Shame they didn't call it Super Switch or something, first time they do this 2 stuff, but expected after the Wii U fumble and despite the legacy of Super it could then be mistaken for a PS5 Pro type deal of the same thing that you don't really need if you have the original (yeah despite the years gap).

Edit: lol @ the hate, like they're not even asking you to preorder or anything, they will show everything & then some before they expect anybody to be interested or buy it, seems like the threads before it actually launches will go down the same legendary route as that one Switch thread on here 🤦‍♂️

Nope. There’s 160 million switches out there and switch 2 is going to be pricey

There’s zero chance that their games are going to be state of the art visually anyways, so it’ll be cross gen unless some title NEEDS exclusive controller support for the new mouse features

Third party exclusives will be much more common for Switch 2 than Nintendo ones.

I suspect the next proper AAA Zelda game is the first proper Switch 2 exclusive, and that’s clearly years away

The rest of my post you replied to, but did not quote, is my answer lol

Reverse groomer.
They’ve been phoning it in for most of the switch generation. Don’t @ me with references to botw/2(crappy Ubisoft open world clone with good physics) & sm odyssey(very boring game).
Mario odyssey is not boring, and there are more Switch games than those 2. Dont you want to play Metroid Prime 4 or Splatoon 3?

What's their history with cross gen?

I personally don't remember there being a lot of 3DS and Wii U games that also released on the DS and Wii?

That's a serious question as well.

None. There are two major releases that have been 'cross-gen' (Zelda: Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild) with separate SKUs for the new platform, but those games largely went on to be associated with the new console anyways.

Mario exclusive to drive sales, i'd guess as well, but like you say expect most thing to be cross gen. Times have changed.

Yeah, MK9 is 100% cross-gen. It literally looks like MK8. That's gonna be the case with a lot of games for at least the first 3-4 years. Which makes sense, they have a user base of 150 million that they won't want to leave behind any time soon.

So Switch 2 games will mostly be Switch games with better image quality and maybe 60fps instead of 30 if we're lucky (MK9 will be 60 on both though).

Yep

People need to get it out of their head that cross gen = bad

In this day and age of iterative hardware updates, it only makes sense

The days of true exclusives are going to be the rare exception until the vast majority of the active userbase has upgraded, which is years after launch as you said

So happy we are finally getting Switch 2 but Nintendos' timeline for this is whack.

2 minute hardware reveal teasing Mario Kart....

I thought they'd have a price & release window attached to it at least if there was no software here, then do a Direct in the coming weeks.

But now we have to wait 2 months to see a Q4 release date and to see more information on..... Mario Kart :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Aren't you a big console booster? These are all strong arguments for PC gaming.

And honestly, for games that ran poorly on the previous console (Pokemon Scarlet/Violet for instance) being able to run them on a newer console for better performance will allow for an entirely new experience. That's a huge reason why I'm excited for the Switch 2.

That would genuinely be a reason for me to purchase a Switch 2 relatively soon. I'm pretty sure they would need some HEAVY "patching" ("patching" is understating it, the dev requirements aren't lightly) but I guess it could be at least worth it for stuff like Xenoblade, Pokemon and Zelda? I'm hoping, but I'm not betting, not by a long shot.

Why? I don’t want games developed with the limitations of current Switch hardware on Switch 2.

Which type of Nintendo games do you actually think are being held back by switch 1 hardware?

The fact that ToTK runs on switch 1 is a bit of a miracle. I can’t see any modern games being more ambitious to the point where it’s impossible

You’ll still get your much higher resolutions and better frame rates on switch 2 vs switch 1

Not a Metroid guy and I find splatoon to be yawn inducing. The only switch games I enjoyed were smash, Mario kart and lm3. For me, it was one of the worst Nintendo gens filled with very little innovation and lazy games. Bunch of overpriced remakes. New entries to old franchises like Mario tennis & strikers which were all worse than their predecessors. Furthermore, there were a surprising amount of first party games with inexplicable performance issues and they release it anyway.

Bad reveal trailer.
Nintendo had the chance to capitalize on the hype, but instead showed almost nothing different about this new console, didn't show how the new gimmick works, and presented a Mario Kart 9 that was visually very similar to its predecessor from 10 years ago.

Which we don't know yet. They've had back-compat before, but it has always meant that the system downclocks to replicate how the original hardware would run the game, there were never any performance improvements. Of course, we're dealing with more advanced hardware now that should pretty easily be able to boost old games, but it remains to be seen.

Literally any game. You don’t think they’ll be able to do infinitely more complex physics simulations in Zelda with this system compared to Switch 1? Thank god the next Zelda won’t be cross-gen.

ToTK was designed with the limitations of the Switch in mind. The game’s world feels intentionally sparse, relying on player imagination and creativity to fill the gaps and drive exploration. This design choice allows the game to run smoothly on the hardware without pushing the device beyond its limits. In contrast, more computationally intensive games, such as those with densely populated worlds, advanced AI, or high-fidelity graphics, would struggle to perform on the Switch.

Yeah I'm looking forward to the direct in April to see what they say.

You’re talking about non-necessary, superficial visual features mostly.

You can do that and still be cross gen.

Kinda lame reveal to be honest but I'm glad Nintendo didn't fuck up and try to be innovative or some shit. Switch 2 is simple and easy to understand. They learned from wii u and also sony to go with numbers.

I believe 9 is crossgen, but I suspect it's more of a BOTW type crossgen situation because that's how it shook out, than they will just be spamming everywhere. Maybe it's because Switch feels like its in twilight with ports, remasters, remakes instead of heavy guns for a WHILE. I sort of expect Switch to keep on getting that support, while 2 gets the "new real ass games"...in addition to all that.

I don’t think they need much more complex physical simulations, it’s not a hindrance game design

If they did that then there is no way this system will sell close to the switch 1. This would essentially just be a switch pro as opposed to a switch 2. A device for enthusiasts.
They said they plan to sell what, at least 20 mil in the first year? With all these stories of how they are producing it, it's hard to believe it won't have exclusive system sellers from the start.

I bought multiple of every Nintendo system since the N64( just 1 wii u tho lol) , but even I wouldn't buy this without Nintendo exclusives.

This would be a wii U level failure in comparison to what it could have been.

I don't care if someone calls it cheap, lazy, boring, nothing new, the same etc.

Shit, that is what they need right now.

I don't think Wii or Wii U helped as much as people think and I believe that entire thing likely hurt the company and they should continue down this more conservative path and I felt years ago that even call it Switch 2 as a direct thing and just doing the same thing was the way to go here vs wild brand new idea or something.

They need fucking consistency and Wii U showed that people are fucking tired of gimmicks, they just want solid hardware and solid support.

When PS6 is shown, its a day 1 for many of us PS fans, I get many might be like "oh but the controller is the same, WOW it just plugs into a tv" annnnnnd that is why we fucking trust them every gen.

Switch 2 is a easy day 1 and I personally hope they continue this path. I'm more on board with a day 1 purchase with this reveal. I'd rather have a solid standard with the company so they can actually build long term trust with fans and 3rd party, then some stupid ass gimmick, save that shit for some optional add on.

It's everything I wanted. A bigger, better and more powerful Switch. Full BC, both physical and digital. The only gimmick they need is the one that defines the brand, the hybrid concept. It's such a great concept and I'm happy that Nintendo stays the path and develops and enhance it further. I know Nintendo likes to experiment and shock the world but right now they need to be conservative and just roll with what they got. Because what they got is pure fucking gold and I'm there day 1.
