Wait, so I cannot copy PS5 save files to a USB drive? I need PS+ to upload them to the cloud?

I wanted to save my Demon's Souls save file to my USB drive as I did with PS4 games, but the option isn't there. However, when I go to the PS4 save files, I can copy them to the USB drive.

I looked online a bit and the only workaround I found involved wiping out my entire system and just backing up the save file which evidently isn't viable.

Is there some trick Gaf has or do I have to pay Sony money to back up a save file?

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
demon souls remake is a ps5 game, you cant backup ps5 game via usb manually.

When doing a backup you don't need to wipe out your entire system? Why would you need to do that, you need enough space to backup your savedata and you can uncheck "games and apps".

Yeah, and I seriously question why.
You stated the reason in the OP, and unfortunately you were right; Sony wants you to pay them for the right to back up a save. It's scummy, it's shitty, and it will work because gamers just eat up whatever shit Sony dumps on em with a smile on their face.

Yes, but then I need to restore the backup with the save...which has nothing except for the save.

To stop exploiting probably originally, PS5 has already been opened up but hasn’t it on kernel level?
Then offer free storage? GOG and Steam both have free cloud storage. I believe Xbox got a limited amount as well.

It's weird but here it is:

I just wanna backup the save files from one game, not the entire system.

It says you can uncheck everything except for the saves. Unless, I didn't read it right.

No, you read it right, but the way it works is once you want to restore those save files, you need to do a full system restore and it will reset the PS5 to factory settings but restore whatever you decided to save. In this case, my entire system would be wiped, but I'd get to keep the backup of Demon's Souls.

Needless to say, this isn't a viable solution.

Everybody has free cloud saves except consoles.
I haven't tried, but online says Xbox does offer free cloud saves.
No, no trick, fuck Sony. But my man Gaiff Gaiff you also lived under a rock for 4 years.
I just got a PS5 Pro a little less than two months ago. If I saw this information, I probably never retained it because it was utterly irrelevant to me at the time.

Can't you chose what to backup?

The playstation blog states:

"PS5 console data you can back up
You can back up the following data:
  • Games and apps
  • Saved data
  • Screenshots and video clips
  • Settings
All user data saved on your PS5 console is included in the backup data. When you restore your backup data, all user data is restored.
If you want to save data without restoring your console, you can use other PS5 console storage locations."

I think to stop people from using hacked saves and exploits but maybe to push a plus member convenience too. The thing that makes me think its more the former though is that you can backup your saves fine without membership, just not individual files.
Yeah, it feels like an artificial paywall to push people into subscribing to essential.
I don't feel like it's worth it, I'm fine without cloud saves but of course I'd love them to be free, just like multiplayer.

Your best solution now, including mine would be to sub to PS+ Essential for a month.

Yes, but this option is for system restore. If you want that save data back, you have to reset the entire system to factory settings and it will then recover whatever you decided to save. That's not a solution. I thought you could do it like on PS4 and just copy the saves to a USB drive and just restore them. Turns out you can't.

Yeah, fuck that lmao. They could have at least thrown us a bone and given us 500MB-1GB of free cloud storage if they were going to take away the ability to just copy the saves to a USB drive.

So you didn't have a PS5? That's interesting man.

Back to topic, yeah it sucks. For PS4 games you can export saves to USB but for PS5 games it's cloud only.

It's a shame Sony lock this behind a paywall as Steam does this for free.

This is why I don't buy bloody consoles. The damn prison was getting too much. I regret starting TimeSplitters 3 now along with a few other classics I didn't finish. So now I have no choice since my niece is taking it back with her.

lol....Sony took USB game saves away? I had no idea either. So if I want to backup my saves I have to have storage large enough to back up the whole damn system? That's just shitty. Already stupid that they put cloud saves behind a damn pay wall like Nintendo, but at least Nintendo still has manual save backups.....right?

Yeah xbox has free cloud saves with no subscription. Like playstation though, xbox doesn't let you do usb exports either. Probably for exploits I guess. Would be great if every platform had both options though (for free).

Why do you wanna put it on usb?

Just upload on cloud and forget about it.

If its paywalled, then pay the toll. Simple.

Sony probably wants more money cause their first party titles are expensive to make. I thought everyone knew the drill by now.

The digital future keeps on giving. I rather trust my cartridges with the SRAM saves thanks.
Nickle and dime bullshit, gamers keep on taking it.

But you can copy your PS5 saves to a USB you just have to be signed in to the same PSN account to transfer it to another PS5

No, you straight-up cannot.

How do you get your save data back on PS5?

To get your save data back on a PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, select the relevant save data (PS5 or PS4), then choose "Download or Delete from Cloud Storage" to retrieve your saved data from PlayStation Plus cloud storage if you have a subscription; if you have a backup on a USB drive, navigate to Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5 and select the appropriate backup to restore your data.

Key points to remember:
  • Cloud storage: Ensure you have a PlayStation Plus subscription to access cloud saves.

  • USB backup: You can also back up your save data to a USB drive and restore from it.

  • Check sync status: Before attempting to restore, verify that your save data is synced to the cloud.

It’s the third time this gets posted. You need to reset the entire system to factory settings for this. This is a system restore, not a simple save backup. If you choose to save only the save files, the system will get wiped and only recover those files once you choose to restore them.

This doesn’t work unless you wanna restore your entire system or lose all your data but just keep your saves.

Yeah, I saw that earlier, but the "key points" say you can use a USB drive just for the save data. That looks AI generated. I don't see that anywhere on the Sony support site.

That's my understanding, no way to back up your saves without using the cloud. So, no saving to a USB drive because they want to compel you to get PS Plus. It's pretty gross, actually.

Yes. And when you go to restore then it is going to overwrite your entire PS5 erasing whatever is still there. There is no option for backup/restore just saves to USB like there used to be. This was already covered earlier in the thread.
Oh ok but my games are on a separate SSD so I'm not sure why that part would be overwritten

The entire PS5 or just the entire section you check boxed?
So for example all my screenshots and video clips will be deleted, if I only backup savegames and restore?

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

Why offer those features free when you can charge them money? Make no sense. Console players are willing to pay

Support page says all data.
  • When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.
Make sure you don’t erase any important data by mistake. Erased data cannot be restored.

but at least Nintendo still has manual save backups.....right?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, nope. You can’t manually move save data off the Switch to an external device. There is one exception: Transferring data to a new Switch. Otherwise all save file backups require a NSO subscription for cloud save access.

Even worse: not every game gets backed up to the cloud with Switch Online. Some of them purposely block online cloud save backups. None of the Pokémon games support cloud save backup, for example.

Mh okay, not perfect but good enough to at least be able to backup stuff at least somehow.
Probably not a bad idea to backup saved data, settings and screenshots like once a month to a dedicated drive.

Wait if you have a PS5 Pro you haven't had it for too long so what are you afraid of losing that you can't back up to the USB?
The data comes mostly from my old PS4 Pro. Even if it didn't, wiping out the last two months to keep a single file isn't exactly something I wanna do. It's not the end of the world. I can do without. I ain't giving Sony a penny for this though.
