There is a way to backup your saves without signing up for a sub. You can back up all your saves to a usb fine. What you can't do is conveniently transfer individual saves from console to console via USB stick/drive and that applies to all consoles.
If you backup your PS5 to a USB drive and the console gets stolen you can easily use your usb backup to restore on a new PS5.

If your console gets stolen I think you have bigger worries than your save files mate.
And no, there are other methods of backing your saves up, but that's not what this is about.

As you describe, you seem to have Xbox, PC and a PS5. Why not stay on the 2 platforms that offer you all those things for nothing?Interesting because I get cloud saves on Steam and Xbox completely free, just for using their platforms. It’s only Sony and Nintendo that charge for them.
Interestingly, Sony and Nintendo used to offer online multiplayer completely free while Microsoft was the only one charging for it.
Now I get more free benefits from Microsoft than I do Sony or Nintendo. Wonder what changed?
You seem to have a lot of spare time since you game on 3 platforms. Why not take a temporary job, I am sure you will be able to purchase PS plus soon.
For the price of 1 game, you will have 12 months of many benefits.

Yep, and it’s so bullshit. I have had an active plus subscription for over 10 years now so I can back up to the cloud no problem, but I don’t want that. I want to save it somewhere on a physical device.

It was. Complaining doesn't get you anywhere. If you work for it, you will have access to many things such as cloud saves, free monthly games, online multiplay etc.
If you cannot afford PS plus, why not stay on the 2 platforms you already have?
The gaming industry is going to difficult times and costs is rising to create games, maintain services etc, there are no free lunches (anymore).

I am just saying, stop complaining and figure out something more useful and that is find a way to ensure you have cloud saves on PS5, it is available for like 4 years on that platform.
Sony will not make it free, accept that and move on. Get PS plus or stay on the platform offering free cloud saves. You can leave saves on the PS5 and there is also some kind of back up solution (image of the whole system).

Its funny to see people blame it on bad competition. Competition exists with free cloud saves but too few consumers support it. Its up to consumers to not buy the product and buy the other option. Sounds like a bunch of cope that will be used for the next decade.

Right? His argument was you don't get something for free. Yet you get them for free on Steam and Xbox just fine so his assertion was blatantly false. It has nothing to do with being able to afford the services. They call cloud saving a value-add for their online service but it's only "added" because they took away the ability to conveniently backup your saves individually. In a way, it's a form of extortion to try to get you to sign up for their online services, especially in the case of Nintendo where you can't even use a convoluted system backup like you can on PS5.
That's a nice set of save files you have there, it would be a shame if anything were to... happen... to them. Good thing for you we offer you an annual protection plan. (Leave the controller, take the cannoli.)
