But that animated show came after the success. Again, I think no one thought Guardians was gonna bust down the doors as it did. Yeah, the trailers helped but I think no one thought it was gonna be a mega smash.

Marvel at least was more confident with Guardians given the superior marketing and production budget, but definitely agreed it was a surprise hit...Guardians will give even Star Wars spinoffs a run for their money

huh, i had early screening tickets for trainwreck like back in may that i found randomly on a school restaurant on the college campus i go to. was during finals week so i didn't end up going.

Ant-man opened 23% ahead of Thor 1 and 44% ahead of Captain America 1 in the 37 international markets it has so far debuted in.

You think Marvel was expecting Thor 1 money though with Guardians.

Antman is a supporting player so giving him his own movie was more of a challenge but it paid off. The real test is phase 3, it helps that Black Panther is on Civil War but Strange and Carol will have just as interesting roads down the line.

60 isn't massive. It is very solid. You can downplay the IP and call it jokey to differentiate it from the greater MCU but it is part of it and it is the lowest grossing film of the group in quite a while.

you obviously have very firm beliefs. Good luck w/ that, bro. :)

AM's marketing was a mess from the beginning. they tried to shove a movie about about a dude who can talk to insects and shrink to their size, as some epic new heroic entry in the MCU.

For all the troubled production aspects Ant-Man had, it still did pretty solidly for being a largely obscure character that I think a lot of people immediately dismissed on name alone. I'm sure when he's worked into the larger Marvel universe, his second solo outing will have more fanfare.

Hey thanks. Even with the slightly condescending tone. I'm going to see it tomorrow and fully expecting to enjoy it btw. I've seen every MCU film in the theaters also just in case you think I'm some sort of hater.

Captain Marvel is going to be pretty interesting, being a female superhero lead movie.

Inside Out passed 300M and Minions dropped more than 55%? It's a great week to be an animation fan.

Did anyone go see Mr Holmes? An Ian McKellan movie sounds like fun.

I saw it, and it's about a B-level movie. Here's my review of it if you're curious

Ian McKellan delivers a fantastic performance in Mr. Holmes, and if you're remotely a fan of the famed detective, you'd probably enjoy the film. That said, it's seriously lacking in the technical department, as the film has lazy digital cinematography that makes everything look cheap and the score is surprisingly generic for Burwell. The mystery is alright, but overall, it's more of a mediation on growing old... which is fine, but not exactly what I wanted. Still I was happy I saw it.

plus the name itself was probably a dumb barrier for more people than any other entry in the MCU

Minions not that good?:p I like the minions in some ways, and Sandra Bullock, but bleh. Glad that Inside Out is doing pretty good.

Ant-Man was my favorite MCU movie, too bad Marvel's marketing/promo guys took a massive dump on it.
Can't allow us to have anyone actually being cooler and more interesting than the Avengers now huh?

Still crazy to think 15 years ago if you told me antman had a movie and was number 1 at the box office I would have laughed in your face lol

Not for a long time. Maybe Inhumans?

Looking at their scheduled release dates, that is the only one that is in a position to have a a much larger film open the week before. Captain Marvel and Doc Strange open the first week of November, and October is always dead. Black Panther would have to bomb based on the movies currently scheduled for the week before.

Just came back to see Ant-Man and I have to say that I have enjoyed it immensely and I hate super hero based movie. It helped the fact that all the characters were likeable, had humour about it and was just plain old fun.

Speaking of that. Every single MCU film has had a #1 opening. I wonder if/when that streak will break.

If they ever try a Leather Boy movie.

MFpOZ5U.jpg

What are his powers?

He has none.

After the original Avengers were dissassembled, Mr. Immortal posted newspaper ads appealing for new members. Leather Boy believed the ad for ‘costumed adventurers’ was for a S&M group, and was refused entry for not having any superpowers. Angered at his refusal and also by the acceptance of Squirrel Girl as a member, Leather Boy returned to the GLA headquarters disguised as Doctor Doom, and killed Monkey Joe in a brutal act of revenge.

I wonder if 10 years from now we'll have a Young Avengers movie starring the same actress who played Cassie Lang in Ant-Man.

Not bad for Ant Man, literally everyone was betting against it critically and in the BO. Should reach $400-500mil WW. I bet we'll see AM2 in phase 3/4.

could AoU have potentially waned interest in this?

I dont think the avg person puts too much thought into it beyond if they liked the trailer or not, online fans have an ongoing discussion and are trying to form a whole narrative and what not, my 9 yr old nephew doesn't give two shits however for example.

Looks like a small opening for a small film. Ant-man is the second lowest opening weekend in the MCU. Right next to Incredible Hulk's 55 million first weekend. Another Marvel franchise film which opened at 58 million would be Fantastic Four 2 from Fox back in 2007. Interestingly enough, Ant-man is also the cheapest MCU film to date.

Marvel still making money. But yeah, July still is a difficult month to make money but that might not affect Guardians Vol.2 in 2017 but maybe Captain Marvel a year later.

Guardians Vol. 2 isn't a July release, though. It is coming out May 5, 2017. What's going to really hurt it at the box office is that Star Wars Episode VIII comes out three weeks after it.

Movies coming out in the 4th or 5th weekend of another film don't really matter that much.

You'd think if Disney actually believed they would hurt each other they'd have moved one of them by know.

I personally, doubt it, Ant Man always seemed quite muted in hype compared to any of the other Marvel films.

So Ant-Man didn't reach $60 million but still landed as #1? Guess Minions didn't has as strong legs as expected.

Maybe, it might just be me but in the UK it feels like after all the HUGE hype for the film's release everyone quickly just forgot about this film =/

Worldwide Updates:

Magic Mike XXL - $90M
Terminator Genisys - $277M
Spy - $227M
Pitch Perfect 2 - $280M
Ted 2 - $143M
Jurassic World - $1.513B
Minions - $626M
Age of Ultron - $1.394B
Inside Out - $490M

Jurassic World will pass Avengers to become the third highest grossing film of all time in the couple of days.

Fuck, Ted 2 seemed to crater =/
Terminator is still not looking too perky
good

Episode VIII is timed to release the same opening weekend as A New Hope being the 40th anniversary of it in 1977 to 2017. And has been reported the big anniversary date is going to be heavily tied into the marketing.

If they were worried they'd bump up or move back Guardians 2, Star Wars is locked into the date it has the 40th anniversary build up and marketing guarantees that.

Although Disney wouldn't have scheduled the films if they are worried. So I am really going to doubt they will suddenly get cold feet.

Huh. I'm honestly shocked that Terminator Genisys is going to eventually hit 300 million WW. I thought that film would barely limp to 200 million.

It made just below expectations (sadly), but at least Ant-Man was #1. Though positive word-of-mouth is likely gonna carry the film through the rest of the summer. More so since, besides Trainwreck (which came out alongside Ant-Man), I can't name any hyped-up movies coming later this summer of the top of my head.
If I did miss any, please let me know.

Mission Impossible and (maybe) The Man from UNCLE?
