Marvel will continue to make money but with DC looking to be getting things going right and Xmen and Star Wars on the horizon they certainly have competition. Ant-Man shows us that any random Marvel IP isn't guaranteed massive numbers.

Not really, it's just 1 film. Guardians made more than Supes.

Star Wars, yes of course.
DC has a lot to prove.

really thought Minions will be number 1 this weekend.

good to see Antman, but I hope MCU mix things up a little. I was let down by Ultron, and Antman was just ok

Poor time to launch such an odd character. Certainly not a bomb, but it deserved a stronger performance. Minions, MI5, and Pixels could all easily eat into Ant-Man's tail at the BO. A shame too because this really is one of my favorite MCU movies thus far. It's creative, funny, just really tight and entertaining.

I hope it has a strong hold in the next few weeks. Word of mouth is generally very positive.

I only buy my absolute favorite MCU movies on Blu-ray, but that definitely includes Ant-Man.

You know that times are changing when 3 of the top 10 highest grossing films of the weekend worldwide are Chinese films only out in China.

Glad for Ant-Man as it was a marvelous film. But this right here, That's the real news. Dat exploding Chinese economy. This is what happens when a fraction of 1 billion people are able to go see movies. And this is why Hollywood is starting to cater to the Chinese. The next few years will be interesting in cinema.

I'm not familiar with how the box office works, does Sunday not count? Or is this an estimate for the whole weekend?

Sunday counts but all of it is just a pretty close estimate based on data collected. Actual numbers are released on Monday and adjustments are made.

I'm hoping positive word of mouth helps Ant-Man in the coming weeks. It was a more enjoyable film than expected given everything.

Disney probably didn't want to release it too soon after Minions since Minions came out earlier in Europe. In my country Minions are absolutely crushing, destroying, annihilating Inside Out at the box office, which is a huge shame given the gap in quality between the two movies.

I enjoyed Ant-Man quite a bit but I'm not surprised it wasn't that big. Just anecdotally, but my theater was only half full at a pretty prime time, and very few of my friends had any interest at all when they're normally all about Marvel stuff.

Damn right, my 7pm showing was empty.

Any word on tracking for JW in Japan?
Interested to see if it will be able to hit $1bn just from international numbers

My area must love Marvel. Me and the wife went to see it today and I was expecting it to be probably half empty.

Shockingly it was sold out. Far better movie than I thought it would be as well but the first act was a little slow

AM's marketing was a mess from the beginning. they tried to shove a movie about about a dude who can talk to insects and shrink to their size, as some epic new heroic entry in the MCU.
People like to rag on about Guardians' marketing, but that Hooked on a Feeling trailer burrowed its way into far more people's minds than... Whatever the hell they were going for with Ant-Man.

Dead

well not really...yet
MoS made more money than every first phase movie outside of Avengers. Shit, it made more than Thor 2.
And was coming off Superman Returns which had toxic audience reception, but seems some love to spin it as a disappointment because it didn't gross Avengers level cash.

I don't know how anyone could think GotG's marketing was bad. "Hooked on a feeling" and the mugshot profiling sold it so, so well. (and I don't even like the movie that much)

If you are talking about worldwide (which I assume you are since Cap 2 was also under it domestically), it's not really a direct comparison since Avengers raised the profile of pretty much all superhero films overseas. The Wolverine became the highest grossing X-Men film internationally by a pretty large margin the same year that Man of Steel's launch. Iron Man 3's international gross was almost $200M higher than the last two film's worldwide gross. Everything in 2014 was huge.

Is Genysis out in China already? Will it make more than Mad Max WW?

No it's not out in China. Yes, Terminator has a decent chance of making more than Mad Max Worldwide.

It's doing fairly well in comparison to some other MCU films as kswiston has pointed out. It still has a bunch of openings.

those MCU films were released years ago when the international market was weaker and Marvel was not as well known compared to the juggernaut that it is now

anyway, i think this is just a matter of expectations. Any other $130m film that had had an opening weekend of $60m would have been seen as been doing reasonably ok but expectations are a lot higher for Marvel films now

You do realize though that Ant-Man is a B-tier superhero film though. A decade ago, b-tier comic films like Daredevil or Ghost Rider made about $200M worldwide. Even X-Men films were topping out in the $400M range. Ant-Man has a pretty good shot at outgrossing all of the X-films except Days of Future Past. Not hitting $700M doesn't make it a miss.

Minions not that good?:p I like the minions in some ways, and Sandra Bullock, but bleh. Glad that Inside Out is doing pretty good.

Minions was a horrible cash grab IMO. Nothing about it was creative or thoughtful, just a terrible movie. I like Sandra Bullock, but it could have been anyone else voicing that character. My 11 year old son however like it.

Also saw it in 3D and solidified my hatred towards 3D versions of movies.

I don't think Marvel launches IPs with the idea that they are going to be "B-tier" though. AntMan is far, far from a flop, my only concern would be if Marvel decides that similar movies won't be worth their time in the future and sticks to the formula even harder now to produce mega blockbusters.

If Ant Man can manage 400 million WW I think they will green light a sequel.

1. For a Marvel film it was cheap to make
2. All signs point to word of mouth being really good
3. It didn't have a home run opening but 58 million is solid and it opened number 1
4. The team up films like Civil War will grow the character. If he is bad ass in the team up films people who skipped Ant-Man 1 may be on board for the sequel since they will be warmed up to the character

So basically while I don't think a sequel is guaranteed I certainly don't think its out of the question either

True but unless Marvel is delusional and think they can dump any character on the big screen and pull 700M they will take a smaller gross. It would be much worse if it was falling behind Thor and Cap 1 OS at this point.

Decent numbers for Antman.

But that crow thread, holy shit was that embarrassing. It was more sad than funny.

I think its fine to track people (if you really want) to post a crow thread but you also need a switch in your head that says "no, even if the extreme was wrong, I was guilty of the same" - the OP clearly expected a Guardians style out of the box hit (despite Guardians clearly not being a super hero film).

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

You have to start somewhere - expecting Ant-Man to trade blows with the big guys for the beginning is nuts. I didnt even know who Ant Man was before the movie was announced lol.
