Stick with drinks first if you haven't been on a date with her. Dinner can be really stuffy even for the most socially apt.
Go to a cool cocktail bar thats not overly pretentious, but isn't a dive. COCKTAIL BAR (not a beer bar that serves cocktails).
Spend a little money, but don't make it look like you are.

I asked her where to go for dinner and she insisted on some fancy place, I didn't wanna do that so I said let's walk around and grab something normal considering we don't even know each other yet. She said ok... she didn't wanna grab noodles or normal Chinese food. Ended up at a french place which, in shanghai means stupidly priced and horribly lacking in quality, but shanghai girls always wanna show how cultured they are... I got a pork rib thing and she got some salmon bacon thing and we had a salad and appetizer, plus two beers, and all up it was about 500 rmb (70 bucks? I forget the conversion).
Anyway she was boring, date finished and she went home (not mine) and I was fucking hungry as hell. Ended up at McDonald's alone at midnight lol.
Shanghai girls always pull this shit. They are too good to eat regular food or have a normal date. It's not that I can't afford that much money, it's just the spoiled attitude of them. Give me a girl from the interior of China and she'll be stoked to take a walk in the park, ride bikes, eat basic food, then come to my house and cuddle and watch movies and I barely even have to spend a dime. Never again dating a shanghai girl.
Edit: and don't want to seem like I take her out I expect her to come home with me, she doesn't have to I know that.. It's just that shanghai girls basically use dates as a place to eat fancy food and take pics of their plate and their drink to share on social media so they can get "face"... she barely even talked throughout the dinner.
