ESA: Tariffs on Video Games Would Cause 'Significant Harm' to 'Everyday Americans'

Fun fact: Biden actually kept Trump's China tariffs for the past 4 years and even added additional ones. Didn't see a ton of articles about people being significantly harmed during the last admin.

The tariffs were extremely selective in what they targeted. A blanket tariff won’t be. A targeted semiconductor ban for TSMC/Samsung would also have a rather large impact.

Pros:
By limiting consumers decisions and purchasing power, then online grifting is definitely bs and won't hold any value.

Cons:
Expensive games will cease to exist.

The 10% additional tariff on China is on the goods that are currently already tariffed, meaning products that were previously exempted are still exempted.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
In an updated statement shared with VGC, the ESA said:

“Video games are one of the most popular and beloved forms of entertainment for Americans of all ages. Tariffs on video game devices and related products would negatively impact hundreds of millions of Americans and would harm the industry’s significant contributions to the US economy. We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to find ways to sustain the economic growth supported by our sector.”

There are still tons of people opposing him tho
If you look at popular vote Trump was up about 2.5 mil I think at the end. In the country of 340 mil, that’s not that big of a win.

The big difference was in electoral college due to how we calculate needed votes.

So you still have large portions of population who really don’t like Trump. Then you have the core Trump supporters.

And folks in the middle who don’t want to pay $10 for eggs or maple syrup. But also really don’t like the stupid identity politics shit Democrats went crazy with. Or the unrealistic energy mandates.

There is no chance it will affect game prices. Most games sells a digital and are already had massive increases.
Do you really think Corpos will miss a chance to raise prices and blame it on someone else? Look at all the COVID price hikes. Large portion was corpo greed.

“Assassin’s Creed is now $80 to account for new tariffs on our dev studios in Canada and China”.

In a just world games would sell $10 cheaper digitally since there's no physical printing or shipping required, but that shit ain't happening.

If anything causes physical games to increase, you can bet digital goes up with it.

Yep, and tariffs are too good of an excuse to miss. Rockstar could hike up GTA VI pricing and blame Trump, lol.

They would also probably hike prices in EU as well and invent the reason (US support studios, reciprocal tariffs, etc).

Both Mexico and Canada have caved within 24 hours.

There's not a single serious news agency reporting with that angle. It was Trump who halted the tariffs, not Canada.

Wait, are you just taking the piss...? In this place I often can't tell..

Yes, obviously Canada can't pause Trump's tariffs. They have to agree to a deal in order for Trump to pause the tariffs. The overall point is unchanged. Instead of retaliatory tariffs, Canada gave in to strike a deal. Now they have 30 days to do what they agree to do. At the end of the day, Canada has little to no leverage against the US, similar to Mexico.

Look at the bright side. Things might get more expensive but stonks will be cheaper when all the global stonk markets crash.

I get that they're negotiating. But that was not the angle of the made up story you quoted.. You know, it's not that hard to detect the horrible reek of shit from MAGA "sources". We should keep that kind smell out of this place.

That's fine. Please speak to the mods and create a list of approved and banned news sources that people here should and shouldn't use so that the rules are clear.

I'm not the boss of you, I just said/meant IMO we _should_ stick to more neutral sources than Libs of TikTok and MAGA (or whatever bitch ass patronizing leftist source that are out there for that matter). Anyway, I'm done.

not sure why Trump is only going for like 10 and 20%. He should put 50% and more on that electronic stuff. Luxury goods, luxury prices. Y'all gonna gobble up the costs, anyway, like the good little consumer pigs y'all are. Oink, oink, little piggies!
