Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

I was thinking more about that 2tb crucial drive for $500

I wonder if it would really perform that much worse than the 850 EVO when it comes to PS4

Edit: based on the reviews I'm reading it sounds like the Crucial has much slower read times so it might not perform as well

Probably not (by which I mean no). I think its been proven that the PS4 Pro cannot even leverage the full bandwidth of SATA3, and in most real world applications on fully capable PCs there is no perceptible difference between a mid-range SSD and something like an 850 PRO for gaming/almost every single regular task. The only time these drives are distinguishable is in synthetic benchmarks or heavy data loading scenarios like uncompressed/high bitrate simultaneous 4K video editing.

Even NVMe which is 4-5x faster than standard SSDs using the PCI-E bus (we're talking 3.1 GB/s vs. 600 MB/s on SSDs) show no perceptible speed difference in game loading.

I've just read an article that an SSD reduces bloodborne loading times to 5 seconds. Issue is, buying an SSD on top of a pro is just massive extra costs.

250gb SSD is clearly not enough space, but neither is 500gb tbh.

I need a minimum of 1TB and don't want to pay more than $200.

coming once amazon delivers my shit later today

I'll be looking forward to that. I bought a 2TB Firecuda yesterday, but seeing these load time for SSDs is giving me buyer's remorse already. I might cancel before it even gets delivered. Seems like Leadbetter was wrong about his prediction on performance improvements.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
I haven't done a whole lot of intentional testing with the 2TB FireCuda, but loading times for The Last of Us are MASSIVELY improved over my 1TB 7200rpm drive. Like, half as long, if that.

I also tried GTA5 since that also has a very long initial loading time – it was better, but not substantially.

On my og PS4 I swapped out the original hdd for a 2tb seagate and when I play bf 1 friends they always load into the map before me, they use stock hdd it's starting to piss me off lol.

if i'm not mistaken best way to test best performance need 4 or 5 run with sshd

See my post on the previous page...I'm loading slow on a stock PS4 Pro now after always loading fast since BF1 launch day on a stock PS4.

I'm curious if going into safe mode and rebuilding the database will fix this. I plan to try myself but I won't be able to until later tonight or tomorrow.

not sure if posted yet. getting close to 5 second load times for bloodborne
Wow, that's a pretty good. I would like to see more tests with Bloodborne such as warping back to the main hub and back to a congested area in the game. I want an SSD for my Pro, but I've got other merchandise I'd rather buy first. The loading times were really are not that long on the standard HDD.

We've already gotten sub-$200 1TB SSD a few times this year.
I'm sure you will see it in the leadup to Black Friday.

Newegg's Black Friday ad just went up and while it's not sub-$200 they will have the 1TB 850 EVO w/ a free digital copy of Watch Dogs 2 PC for $250

also a 960GB SanDisk Ultra II for $220 (no free game with this)

Really? I'll return my 2TB Firecuda, sell my the HDD in my Pro and possibly sell WD2 as well. THAT would work out fine.

Do you have a link to the Newegg Black Friday ad? Thanks.

Edit* I see the ad but not the Evo plus WD2

Is this still a thing?
I thought OS trim support stopped being a concern like 5-6 years ago since the firmware on SSDs handle their own garbage collection.

It stopped being a concern because Windows supports trim natively. When your computer does scheduled defrags, it will do an "optimize" (which means trim) on any ssds.

Do they? What should I look for when shopping for an SSD in regards to garbage collection? I used to look for Sandforce controller, but that doesn't seem so popular anymore.

Sandforce? That takes me back.
The SSD world has changed so much since then.

They're all fine really.

Does it also support TRIM? That's the main reason I don't put SSDs in my PS4.

The operating system of PlayStation is UNIX based (Linux for PS3, FreeBSD for PS4), and only necessary and/or user defined file writing happens (installing games, updates, patches, saving in-game data info, etc).

You do not get cookies and other crapware loaded on your drive on the PS3/4 like you do on a Windows O/S PC.

Note how you never have to defrag a regular PlayStation hard drive over years of use....it never slows down.

In addition almost all SDDs have firmware based TRIM support for non windows OSs now. Pretty much been that way since 2013.

So, really no need to worry

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
While it's not SSD, I'm so far very pleased with the 1TB stock HDD. In Shadow of Mordor, I haven't come across a single fast-travel or load time more than 5~7 seconds.

I don't know whether the stock was that fast too, but this has been great so far.

What about the files i need?

You have to go to Sony's firmware download page and scroll all the way down. Don't download the ~300MB firmware update, you need the ~900 MB one further down the page. Then just put it in the UPDATE folder. On a USB flash drive, you should have a PS4 folder and in that folder have a PS4 folder, then in that folder have the firmware file in it.

Okay where do i begin?

I've put my 2tb Samsung non ssd drive in my pro and I'm experiencing the same sluggish share button response. Also get the same slow laggy freeze response when trying to open the browser while the next bf1 map loads.

I tried the share button when the original 1tb drive was in and it's was snappy. Trouble is I only tried it once before I put the 2tb in. The 2tb HD is only a couple of years old I think so it's not old tech.

Will have to install the 1tb again and do some checks. Anyone else getting the same sluggishness?

Y'all fuckin up with the Evo drives. They will not perform any better than the Crucial MX300. Got a 750GB MX300 SSD for $170 and just put it in now to test Battlefield 1/Titan Fall 2/Ratchet and Clank.

Yeah, you're right, the share button is a bit weird now. But I think I saw the same thing pre drive change so I figured it was some oddity to the Pro share system. I will check the share options but it definitely has a delay. Hmm

I am going to test it this weekend, but I installed the 1tb Samsung 850 Evo into my PS4 Pro already! Playing some Overwatch on it tonight :D

I need a full TB to feel comfortable. You are right that an Evo is overkill for a console though. I'll go with the best deal I can find in two weeks as long as it is a reliable brand.

Do you have a link to your deal btw?
