I just want to say as a person who has battled depression for the last few years, it is absolutely wrong to say he was a bad person, asshole, etc. It also does not mean he did not love his daughter dearly. Depression is a disease and these days, doctors are way to quick to just prescribe some meds without even knowing the full condition of the patient. These medications (specifically narcotic sleep aids) have a very high chance of being abused by people afflicted with this condition. People who are depressed are not in a normal logical state of mind - even if it seems that way, it's a twisted logic, not the type a well balanced person would use.
I feel terrible for the pain he felt as well as everything his daughter must now live with.
