I just want to say as a person who has battled depression for the last few years, it is absolutely wrong to say he was a bad person, asshole, etc. It also does not mean he did not love his daughter dearly.

And I'd like to say, as a person who battled depression for about eight years straight, what you chose to do during that time is still your choice, and it's irresponsible to place the blame on anything else, even a "disease." If he did kill himself, then it was his choice to give up, his choice to abandon his daughter, and all of that.

Depression doesn't put the gun in your mouth, the pills in your hand, or whatever else, you do.

Also, seriously, the people in here bitching about people asking about the status of TDK are complete morons. I like how some argue that we know him so well through his acting and movies, and then say we're heartless to care about the status of his latest project. It IS possible for somebody to feel bad that a person is dead, AND care about the fate of their work, both at the same time, you know.

but it has a sort of religious following around here.

That's what's messed up about this whole situation. GAF loves Batman (yes, the movies are awesome) so therefore anyone associated with Batman has to be awesome (Bale, Ledger). Now that Ledger has died, it's like he's been promoted to some sort of religious figure. In reality, he was a messed up guy with a history of substance abuse, who couldn't figure out how to get out of the situation he was in. He used sleeping pills aggressively, killed himself with them either accidentally or purposely, and ruined his daugther's life. Yeah, what a great guy.

Before settling down with Williams, Ledger had relationships with actresses Heather Graham and Naomi Watts. He met Watts while working on "The Lords of Dogtown," a fictionalized version of a cult classic skateboarding documentary, in 2004.

The guy nailed Heather Graham and Naomi Watts . . . what more did he have to accomplish? He lived more than most of us will.

He's been acting very strange in interviews and has commented that he's been sleeping about two hours a night. I don't know if that was from drug use or not, but it makes one wonder.

I'm not some cineast like ELITE-gaf so don't attack me for my lack of knowledge, but I still go and see a couple of movies per year and I've never heard of the guy until the announcement of BM2.
So was he good?

Arguable. He did a lot of Hollywood type stuff which I'm sure GAF hates, but I absolutely loved the guy. He was in The Patriot, The Four Feathers remake, A Knight's Tale, The Order/Sin Eater, Brokeback Mountain, I'm Not There, and Brothers Grimm. Kind of surprising you don't know him.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
I don't know why people are so quick to assume it was suicide. it sounds like he was having serious problems with sleep and was taking tons of sleeping aid drugs. he was probably just desperate for sleep and overdid it. you'd like to think that he wouldn't intentionally do himself in with a two year old daughter.

Same deal, if it was an overdose. He was doing drugs, and died. There is a reason some people calm down once they have kids, and apparently this guy was too wrapped up in himself to care much for anyone else, including his daughter. But you know, RIP good man.

They weren't hard drugs you fucking idiot.

RIP
This is horrible news. Any young guy with a bright future ahead of them, it's always sad, celebrity or not.

Interesting how peole are stating the Joker couldn't be recast after having such a good actor portray such an iconic character.

Remember Jack Nicholson's Joker? You know, one of the greatest villain performances put on film?

I'm sure they could get someone else if they wanted to.

yes, and heath's joker went in a completely different direction. it would be difficult to replace him with someone acting the same way.

I remember watching Lords Of Dogtown and was shocked when I saw the credits and his name was listed. He was that good in it.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt because he always seemed fairly well adjusted, but none of us knew him in the least, so suicide wouldn't surprise me either.

I love how people are talking about matters such as recasting while simultaneously spoiling The Dark Knight.

Great going.

Spoiling TDK?
It's Batman. If you don't know the general story you probably have little interest in the film.
If you know the general story, then you're already spoiled.

Thanks for the update, RSTEIN. I always knew I could count on you to provide us with the most up to date information on someone else's death.

You don't know shit about his fucking life. And the fact that you think that he wouldn't think about his baby is even worst of an assumption. He wasn't a fucking washed up actor or anything at the slightest, All this just proves is that theirs things in life that means more then pussy and money you twot.

you make yourself look stupid talking too much. sorry.

easpecially earlier when you made the equation: "when a group of people don't know X personally, there is no reason to *give a love fest for their work since countless people die."

X could be the pope, any president, any actor
*love fest? sorry, people are just respecting his death/career and saying RIP. a select few are saying the movie can't be recasted. which can be debunked since the crow and joker has been recasted before.

other people, like you, have no care of his death just because he od'd. which is ridiculous. understand the mind and it's effects on a person. now.. if he killed his daughter.. that's another story. he didn't however.

Any particular reason other than the fact that her performance reminded me of an even shittier Kirsten Dunce doing an even shittier Mary Jane character?

(Yes, Dunce)

Take your pick.

Watch the movie.

Its one of the few super hero movies, that doesn't feel like a super hero movie.

Don't jump to conclusions yet Rstein. Don't generalize the situation, I don't think anyone has the right to make assumptions aboout someone else based solely on rumours or the media alone.

If he commited suicide, poor girl indeed. But if this was accidental then that changes the whole situation.

Chill dude, I can see you're angry after reading what happened to you but don't overreact to things like this.

Celebrity or not, as it has been quoted, it's always tragic when someone so young and witha bright future dies, or decides to put and end to his life without thinking about the direct consequences.

I'm sure the jetlag between London and NYC only added on to his already existing sleeping problems, as quoted earlier in the thread. I doubt it was suicide, as well.

I think you missed the point.

Why would you recast a dead character? And historically, the villains in the Batman movies die. Except Riddler and Freeze I think.

I definitely believe in the reality of choice, man. I'm just saying that those who have this affliction have varying levels of biological and psychological barriers that are not on the same level as others. While it is definitely possible to overcome, unfortunately, not everyone is strong enough.

Btw, I really enjoyed your writing in Gamefan.

Holy shit, this came out of nowhere. This sucks, he was a pretty good actor and I was anxious to see him as the joker. I hope he didn't commit suicide.

Good points, you're right. It's quite obvious to me that I clearly see this whole situation differently than most people in this thread. Of course this is a tragedy. Of course it's a sad event when anyone's life is lost - accident or not. I did overreact. I'm just coming from experience, that's all. My life has basically been surrounded and filled with depression. My father did the same thing to me when I was in grade 3.

I just want to say I'm sorry to everyone. I didn't intend to offend anyone. I'll bow out of this thread now.

:)

For the record, if it's suicide, I will mostly agree with you due to the amount of it I've seen in my life as well, even though I hugely respected Ledger.

Based on what I've read about him he was really a true actor. Despite having a God-given pretty boy look, he often turned down these roles to go for more artistic and risky ones. He shall be missed. An odd coincidence that he was found around 3:30; I was in a class from 2-4pm today and at 3:30-3:35 the clock stopped.
