Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Is Well Optimized Partly Due To Xbox Series S, Says Dev

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 exceeded everyone’s expectations on launch, selling 14 times faster than its predecessor and recouping its budget in just a day. The game has also become a critical darling, with fans giving high praise to its medieval world and a difficulty that is easier to navigate than Soulsborne titles.

The Warhorse title has also worked exceptionally well on all consoles and PC, which is a stark difference from its predecessor. And, according to a developer working on the game, the reason Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 runs this smoothly is none other than Xbox Series S.

While speaking on the Iron Lords Podcast, Warhorse’s international manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling revealed that the RPG’s optimization on the Series S helped the other platforms greatly.

The optimizations also for the Xbox Series S helped greatly with the other platforms as well.

The developer said Xbox Series S is the weakest of the available platforms but the Xbox Series S helped the team come up with more clever ways to save memory and make Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 run on the platform.

As a result of this approach, the techniques applied to the Series S helped Warhorse save memory on other ports helping the game run smoother without sacrificing any visual fidelity. Hence, you can either go full force with the more powerful consoles or use the ideas from Series S to help you, as per Tobias.

This is an interesting piece of information as the current narrative suggests that the console hinders development and delays video games. Even Microsoft’s own first-party exclusive Avowed skipped the 60 FPS mode on the cheaper console.

Tag, you're it.
It's crazy to make a statement like this in my opinion. Like, don't you want your game to be the most optimized it can? If it wasn't for the Series S they would've gone "welp it's running like shit but oh well"?

Studios really need to get their heads out of their asses.

So they are saying they had to hold the game back to run on Series S, that the game us limited enough to run well on Series X, PS5 and PS5 Pro?

If this is the goal, we should ask developers just to make PS4 games still and we will play them on our PS5.

You’re overthinking this shit.

It’s more like the fact that they’ve got to go through extra squeeze to get it to work on the Series S, but that optimization work also benefits other consoles. Nobody is saying they weren’t ever going to do any optimization.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Larian also said something similar.

The developer reduced the game's RAM and VRAM requirements on the Series S by 10% and 35%, respectively. As a result, the RPG no longer needs to resort to using the slower memory in the Series S. The CEO of Larian believes this improvement will also benefit all other versions of Baldur's Gate 3

This is complete b.s considering these same devs previously came out in a statement and said that the series s hardware held them back because of its lack of ram and i have the quote here.

As reported by Czech website Zing.cz, producer Martin Klíma revealed Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was affected by hardware limitations with the Xbox Series S console. The main cause of the issues boils down to the Xbox Series S's 10 GB of RAM, which affected how large Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 could be. While the sequel is larger than the first game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 could only be roughly 25% larger than the original title.

So they hated the hardware before, but now are coming out and trying to praise it after it forced them to scale their game down significantly.... Right....

Cause they were struggling with it back then.

Learnt how to make it work, then applied it to other systems as well.
