People hate racists and yes they have good reasons why. But I doubt half of us would of thought differently if we were to have grown up in that era. It's not because we are bad people, but the generation didn't know any better.

No one can go back in time and give you one reason to why it happened. Hell I'd bet we each have a family member that was a full blown racist. It's sad, but unfortunately true.

no need to defend racism, especially not with the "everyone was doing it" song

Gotta love Hannity's crying about being connected to Bundy's viewpoints when he and countless other conservative leaders were the ones who connected themselves to him.

Well I am sure some of us wouldn't have thought that way... you know considering we would have been on the receiving end of said racism.

And you are kind of defending racism.

My father is from that generation. He sure as hell "knows better"

No I'm not. This is BS. Stop. All I'm saying is that kids were raised with racist parents without their control.

Yes you are.

You're saying that because there are racists around you, you would be racist too. By your logic we'd never have racial progress

You're attempting to prevent people from owning and being responsible for their ideas.

Okay.. i heard the Hannity thing. You can really tell he is pissed lol The Right is so hard up for a hero to rally behind and this one just blew up right in their face so hard. Was a very satisfying listen.

If you're one of those legislators who saw, finally, a populist moment coming for your land soveriegnty bill, you may have just lost your most visible champion.

It has nothing to do with when he grew up -- this is mainstream conservative thinking. Even fucking Alex Jones admits this. BTW, how is the notion that a white person grew up a racist 60 years ago a defense? I could see that for a black person who was treated like dirt through their childhood you could excuse their later racism but it is not like Cliven Bundy was persecuted in his youth -- he belonged to the subjugating class

Kids grow up in religious families and then become atheists. At some point you make up your own mind what you believe and have to be responsible for those beliefs.

God damn what a wonderful country we're in that people are learning more and more how to NOT keep their fucking mouths shut and give us their fucked up opinions.

Cliven Bundy is 67. He would have been 17 when the Civil Rights Act was passed. To say he's the product of some bygone era when everyone was racist is ridiculous.

"Conservatives want old people to die, granny over the cliff. They want the young people to fend for themselves. They want to poison the air and poison the water."

The really easy way to do away with this perception would be to stop supporting policies and candidates who stand for these things.

So Hannity is down to just complaining about 'government overreach' or being 'disproportionate'? That is all he has got?

Well, it will be interesting to hear him bring those every time some minority gets beat up, shot, or arrested by the police for no good reason.

Kids also got spankings from their neighbors. I'm saying they were brainwashed.
What's the impetus to do better at any point of time? I'm sure there are equally "compelling" excuses for racism today. Going to sing them a sad song of circumstances too?

In short: absolve the past for its sins, live in the sins of the present.

He'll get to that right after he gets around to expressing outrage at those white dudes who got busted playing the "knockout game."

No, you don't get to say something incredibly stupid and not expect people to call you on it.

Some people's parents raise them to post stupid things.

The problem is that there's an implied argument here. That people used to be a lot more racist and that people's opinions are in part determined by their upbringing isn't interesting or new information, and you know that it's not. So you're not bringing this up as an interesting factoid. You're bringing this up because you think people need to be more mindful of this. Who's behaving as if they're insufficiently mindful of the various reasons why people turn out racist?

All I see is strongly-worded criticism. So I feel like the only plausible goal of your post was to convince people that criticism in this thread is too harsh given that Bundy is just a product of his upbringing, or whatever. That's why you appear to be justifying or at least excusing racism. If that's not what you were aiming to do, you probably should explain why you felt the need to say what you said.

Okay.
People get set in their ways. And when I see posts like "Man I can't wait till this generation dies" isn't justifying anything either. I feel that the impact to a child's upbringing will follow him the rest of his life. Also, there is a large percentage of people who don't even know who the first president of the United Sates was. I don't condone what he's saying. I'm restating what you said you already know. That his upbringing caused him to be this way. I have this terrible image of kids throwing racial slurs in the early 1900's when I think about this. It makes me realize that Caucasian kids were brought up to hate another race. I was trying to break down this pillar. If someone just says "Oh that person is a conservative, they must be dumb". That doesn't give me any proof to why they are dumb. A lot of conservatives despise racism. This type of upbringing is currently happening in North Korea. Their kids are being taught to hate America and they also think a lot of questionable ideas about their leader.

Whenever I go back to study segregation I become more and more terrified. And it's because we threw these thoughts of hatred into a lot of children's minds. Kids believe a lot of things growing up and if they had not been exposed to this then maybe segregation would of ended sooner than it did.

They should know better now though... And I think that is precisely what makes them bad people. I grew up with a racist upbringing. I grew up with a homophobic upbringing in an era when being homophobic was very much written into the law and norm of the times. I grew up in a religious upbringing.

Yet I am none of these things.

At some point in your life, personal responsibility needs to be more important than your upbringing and what you were told to think.

How in your view did slavery end, the civil rights act happen, LGBT acceptance happened?

You're still making justifications... come on breh.

People aren't racist just because of their upbringing. There are plenty of racist who's parents were not racist at all.

Some people are just shitheads and how someone was brought up is not an excuse for their behavior.

There is a racism issue within the conservative party which quite a few conservatives like to ignore.

"He weighed in on the state of Black America today."

See, this is the problem. This is what this entire thing comes down to.

Cliven Bundy is being made a scapegoat because he didn't distill his racism down into dog whistles. THIS IS WHAT THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY BELIEVE. It's just that ol' Bundy was a little too live with the way he said it.

We've been hearing this same shit this whole fucking time.

He is saying what Bundy said isnt racist.. that he was just weighing in on the state of Black America. "Worrying out loud about the state of Black America" 4:10 in the video.
you made it about 20 seconds farther than me, couldn't deal.

Hey come on guys... he just wants to help black people! He says they were better off as slaves for their own benefit, y'know? Not out of any kind of malicious racism or anything....

*crickets*

Or, y'know, he's just a piece of shit.

hipbabboom

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
"Just asking questions"

I know right. It's funny how he implies that Cliven Bundy could have been talking about any other race and doesn't seem to want to connect the question with the intent of a person who explicitly specified only black people. The state of Black America today is heavily due to the racism of folks like Cliven and my dear radio host but privilege being so transparent, I can't blame either for not seeing that.

Especially when he specifically talked about Hispanics in a positive light.

The government stopped propping up slavery with the law, finally struck down/repealed Jim Crow and anti-homosexual laws?

I wonder what those federal troops were doing at elementary schools. I guess they were acting as private citizens who just happened to be in uniform.
