Nintendo really likes Metacritic

So you actually read the transcript? Um, congrats? This "I can read" chest pounding is frankly embarassing.

But seriously lol, why does this article exist.

I wasn't chest pounding that I can read.

My point is the author specifically points out that Iwata understands the issues with the Metacritic system, but then he ends the article with, "Yuck, Nintendo. Just yuck."

On topic: I don't understand this thread. What is the problem exactly? I mean, Sony put the amount of GOTY awards TLoU got on the cover of the game.
If Nintendo have something to brag about, and their output lately HAS BEEN absolutely phenomenal, why would they not do it?
It's popular to not like or ever reference Metacritic in a positive light on this site.

If Nintendo games are so good, why the bad sales? Either billions of gamers are stupid, or Nintendo games really aren't so good and the scores are wrong. In a world where the media thrives on console warrior clicks and smartwatch games can be "5/5", I wonder which one is it is...
Hoping this is a troll.

Good games often do not sell because of marketing.
With good marketing, you can sell any game. Unless you are making a case that FIFA 2015 is the best game ever because it sold really well?

Haha I'm making fun of the author. He really doesn't seem to understand what was actually said.

So either people who don't buy nintendo games are dumb or the games are overrated to you. Gotcha.
*This is if the post is serious*

I mean look at this:

This is actually rather sad.

Um, congrats?

In short, Nintendo games are better than Sony or Microsoft games, because Metacritic said so. Or something.

Iwata. Dude. Stop.

These aren't comments, btw. These are one-liners in what seems to be a very amateurish and non-professionally written news report article. Jeez!

I know, I know, this topic has been talked about a lot, but seriously? That's how you write news articles nowadays? Did I miss something?

I feel like Bashcraft heard people talking about unscrupulous bonuses tied to Metacritic scores and decided every time someone mentions Metacritic, that person must be a bad person. And then fired this blog post off in righteous indignation.

Reggie's been doing this for years. Every time he gets backed into a corner about sales he talks about critical reception.

Yeah! You tell him! How dare he tell people about how well regarded the products he sells are! Keep landing these killer blows and we'll have nothing to talk about besides unit sales in no time!

they don't have much else to brag about in these meetings.
Pretty much. The 3DS is looking to not meet the 75 million mark and Wii U will be lucky to get to 15 million. Software is the only thing really doing well.

Amiibos are killing the hardware in sales.

Because
1. investors care about sales and they're not going to sell more with a Metacritic Seal if they don't bring first new players with the big hits.
2. they packed this comparison to look better by putting stupid restrictions and we already discussed about this in the old topic.
3. about the pic itself, they did it for comparison, which is pathetic to me because of these restrictions.

It wouldn't be hard to have a fair comparison, just ignore User Scores that's full of bias and ignorance and let's count DD-only games too (they were excluded if I remember correctly). Easy as that.
Now, I know why Nintendo did it, I'm not dumb. I just disagree with the method and I still think investors don't care much.

Your first point is totally irrelevant,
To your other points, you seem upset that Sony and MS software doesn't look as favorably under this comparison. But if Nintendo looks at Metacritic and finds that they are receiving good critic averages and user averages, why shouldn't they take notice? If their competitors don't have good user scores, that isn't their fault and it is perfectly fair for them to say as much.

I would love to see a legit metric where we can safely throw out all the game reviews that are full of bias and ignorance. I don't think it is as easy as throwing away user reviews. This is the system we have and it's really hard to fault anyone for acknowledging the numbers when they swing in their favor.

In before someone links to a Ben Kuchera opinion piece.

Although, to be fair, the article in the OP is a pretty standard Bashcraft.

According to the same metacritic, PS4 has more good games(>75/100) than Wii U.

PS4: 100
http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/ps4?sort=desc

Wii U: 78
http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/wii-u?sort=desc

Xbone: 65
http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/xboxone?sort=desc

Keep also in mind that PS4 is a year less on the market.

The top 10 of the PS4 list can be played on the PS3.

Grand Theft Auto V
The Last of Us Remastered
flower
Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition
Rayman Legends
Fez
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

But I guess graphics.

We've got a five-page thread about this already. Plus I don't see how anything not written by Patricia Hernandez could be the worst Kotaku article ever.

I used to read Kotaku a lot. They offered something interesting. Then I found NeoGAF and hear about things about 2 days before Kotaku publish it.

I don't see the problem with the comments you highlighted, OP. While I do think Nintendo systems have the best games right now, most people don't agree, and no amount of Metacritic boasting from Iwata will change that.

Well, to be fair, bragging about Metacritic scores when your sales are in the dumps is pretty dumb too.

Yup.

Who wrote it? Don't wanna give clicks.

Brian Asshat.

Gaming journalists want to be taken seriously then they release shit blog style articles.

I am not saying that information used at a shareholder meeting would be brilliant gaming journalism. But this fly by Facebook style commentary crap is not the way to report what happened.

It's always the usual people who agree with lame articles like this. Everyone brags about critical reception.

- Sony brags about 200 GOTY awards for the Last of Us (Amazing Game).

- Nintendo's output the past couple of years have been so amazing. Why shouldn't they brag about it.

As for sales. If the Wii U was doing better, Mario Kart and Smash would have sold better.

The software sales are bad because the hardware sales are bad :)

I'm also struggling to understand if you're arguing the former or the latter. Sure, all of those **** iPhone games get 5/5s, but those reviews are from randos, not from game reviews. And they also sell really well. So I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

Your overall point is correct, but Flappy is pretty good...

Software sells hardware.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
The top 10 of the PS4 list can be played on the PS3.

The only one you can't play on PS3 is Binding of Isaac, but you are correct, most of that list is PS3 titles.
Which is also a problem of its own

Bragging about Metacritic when your sales are "in the dumps" is a bad idea, isn't it? You should lead an investor's meeting where you tell everyone your company flat-out sucks.

Its a light response to a light story. I would not call it an article, just as I wouldnt call Metacritic a helpful tool that should be encouraged in any way.

Considering that many publishers give bonuses bases on metacritic scores, I do not understand the point of the article.

I find it difficult to call an article the worst ever when it's merely mocking something that's so incredibly stupid.

He's mocking Nintendo more than MC, and mocking them for something that every publisher does. Nintendo DOES have several titles of very high quality this generation, especially compared to the competition, so why wouldn't Iwata make a point of it to Nintendo's shareholders?

It's better to think of them as blog posts rather than articles.

Surprised it got ported to Vita but not PS3.

I don't understand this at all.

Companies have been bragging about review scores and positive quotes from reviews for a long time.

Is it bad this time around simply because it's Metacritic? I don't get it.

If Nintendo games are so good, why the bad sales? Either billions of gamers are stupid, or Nintendo games really aren't so good and the scores are wrong. In a world where the media thrives on console warrior clicks and smartwatch games can be "5/5", I wonder which one is it is...

Example:

Crossy Road: 9/10
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Crossy+Road/review.asp?c=62685

ALBW: 8/10
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/3DS/The+Legend+of+Zelda:+A+Link+Between+Worlds/review.asp?c=55176

Nintendo, and Nintendo only people, need to ask themselves: is Crossy Road really better than ALBW? Or are they being measured by different sticks?

Natureboy's patented "A 10 for a Nintendo game is an 8 for a Sony game" shtick. Forged in the pits of GameFAQs and tempered through various Gaf bans. Perhaps today it takes foot at last in the minds of the masses.
