Yeah, this is one of those match-ups I feel guilty playing. But, there are only 3 things to look out of when fighting Carl: 1) If Carl's 3C hits you (the one where he slides into your shin), burst. If he or she catches you a second time with 3C, consider the round over; 2) If the 3C hits you as the 8th (or higher) hit of a combo, you can tech out of 3C right away to avoid the clap; 3) Depending on the timing the Carl player uses, it MIGHT be possible to escape the loop if you break the throw at the latest possible moment.

Being able to tech out of 3C if the combo is high enough is interesting, now my main worry is whether or not most/all Carl players actually know how to do the trap! I got out of the trap before just by bursting in the air, they must not have done it right...and considering I'm already on higher alert, getting hit by a random 3C and bursting would probably seem dumb if, on their end, they just decided to use that move and don't know the followup, but I guess a precaution helps over a potential instant loss.

Haha, that's pretty cool. I noticed that combing the sparkbolt into the magna tech wheel gets people to burst a lot, depending on when they do it they may get sucked in and get hurt badly anyway.
