The Nintendo Switch 2 | Officially Announced (Switch 2 Direct Scheduled for April 2nd)

No analog triggers again? Don't they care about people who like to play racing games?
I wish they would do analog buttons like Sony did with the DualShock 2 back in the day. You’d never be able to tell that the face buttons and L2/R2 were actually analog inputs with pressure sensitivity.

It’s a really underutilized hardware mechanic in gaming imo.

A very tame and by-the-numbers update.
Safe is the name of the game.

Itll be interesting to see which games will not be backwards compatible.
Im hoping its not all those obscure shmups the console is known for.

On the bright side it’s not really 3-4 months from direct. It’s just 2 1/2 month away. February is only 28 days this year. So April 2 is like end of March! 🤣 😊

Crazy that this thing won't be releasing till later this year. I remember people thought Switch OLED was going to be a Switch Pro. That was back in 2021. This is going to be 4 whole years after people expected new hardware.

Switch hardware ended up being as long in the tooth as the Xbox 360 at the end of its generation.

Hideki Kamiya's rant :

“I hope that all of the people who leaked Switch 2 information/those who helped leak it will be cursed for the rest of their lives to always have poop on the soles of their shoes when they get home.

The shitty leaker only acts for his own pleasure and self-satisfaction, not only is he not contributing to anyone’s benefit, he is incurring all sorts of opportunity losses, and has done nothing to be proud of in front of others. He is the worst of scum, so he should be covered in shit from head to toe and thrown out of the atmosphere… and then stop thinking and wander forever."

You are making assumptions on the power of the console. When games will move to being only PS5Series games (which is already happening), Switch 2 will quickly get out of the equation.
The specs already leaked and we know it uses DLSS. The power is between a ps4 and ps4 pro.
Nate ( the guy who leaked that the switch 2 was going to be revealed today) revealed that Microsoft flight Sim 2024 is coming to it. Microsoft flight Sim is basically the most demanding game available currently. If it can run that... I can't imagine it having a problem. And if Rockstar will downscale GTA 6 to run on a series S, you can imagine what other devs will do to run on a switch 2 in the future to get millions more in sales.

Do you guys think they will re-release TotK and BotW, looking a whole lot better than how they do now? I think that has a bigger chance of them patching the Switch versions for Switch 2.

It would be truly disappointing if it's just BC, no visual and framerate improvements. What is typically a Nintendo move in these cases?

I love Nintendo and the Switch is my favorite console but this has got to be the most underwhelming announcement to one of the most anticipated console releases I have witnessed.

It looks like it will have a mouse functionality which will be cool. Kind of like the Lenovo Legion Go, which I just got on sale which is also making me wish they released the Switch 2 earlier. They kind of missed their windows with never handhelds releasing.

I think Nintendo will have optimization on its side, which I prefer. However, I don't know how it will compare to the upcoming Z2 Extreme handhelds coming out. Those will eventually go on sale in less than two years.

The rampant leak culture doesn't help either. The clickbait YouTubers are like vultures. It took away a lot of the surprise and initial buzz.

Considering there were rumors a while back of Nintendo showing off BoTW running at 60 FPS behind closed doors, I’d say for that title at least, there’s a good chance.

They will probably have a full HD version running at 60 fps with maybe increased FOV, less pop in, and antialiasing. Maybe. Hopefully. Probably not :/

Rumor mill is that they’re going to release a remaster of BotW, so you’ll probably have to buy that game again to get those benefits. Haven’t seen anything regarding TotK.

But I’d think the Switch 2 would just be able to brute force a lot of games even without patches or any manual developer inputs (?) as long as they have variable resolutions and framerates.

Considering there was rumors a while back of Nintendo showing off ToTK running at 60 FPS behind closed doors, I’d say for that title at least, there’s a good chance.
That was BotW, which is rumored to be getting a remaster.

60fps would be pretty damn nice, hopefully with some much needed visual improvements too.

I really hope it's not just Breath, because I played most of that on WiiU, Tears however I haven't and even though it's subjective, isn't Tears the better game?

146 million Switch 1 is a huge market, seems like crossgen would be best for max profits for Nintendo, a couple years at least until switch 2 user base is significant?
that's one way to think about it.

But I don't think Nintendo thinks like that.

If they had great new game ideas still for the current system then they wouldn't be coming out with a new system.

And Nintendo wants to sell you the new system once they've decided a new system is warranted. They want consumers to see the new system allows and is required to play new games and experiences.

To also put those games on the Switch would be saying keep your old system you don't need a new one. Mixed messaging.

IT also creates more work for each title going forward. And ideas for new games on the new system will be restricted to also needing to work on the old system.

Nintendo thinks a little differently and more longer term in my view. I always think of the golden goose fable. YOu get more money in the long run by not killing the goose.

Last, customers too are ready for the new system. Switch software sales peaked a few years ago.

I’m not a big Nintendo guy anymore. Grew out of their IP so I would be getting this for third party support so it will come down to….is it better than a steam deck when that will have the wider array of titles.

Yes, I personally think it improves on BotW in every way imaginable. Can’t think of a single thing BotW does better. But even so they do have their own gameplay mechanics, “dungeons”, enemies etc. etc. Different flavors.

I replayed BotW again before TotK so I’m not very keen on a remaster of that game either, personally. But I guess it depends on if they’re going to add new content or not.

Tbh I’ve spent so much time in the BotW/TotK Hyrule I’m not all that interested to return to that map for quite a while I think.

I would never ever buy a Nintendo system for 3rd party games.

That was a horrible first trailer.
You can tell that they tried to introduce it like it's an New iPhone.
The problem is, Apple is all about the hardware, Nintendo is all about the software. They should have had a presentation focused on the new games.

Flight Sim runs in or streams from the cloud iirc.

The same Nintendo that just released the exact same Donkey Kong game that came out over a decade ago without any graphical enhancement.
You expect them to make BOTW 'a whole lot better'?

The main thing i still wonder about Switch 2 is Will the old Switch games (like DOOM, The Witcher 3 or Batman Arkman Knight) be updated on Switch 2 to use better graphics? Or Switch 2 will just upscale the resoultion of this Switch 1 games but f.e. Arkham Knight will still be that ugly with downgraded very very low graphics

That’s the rumor.

And I’d assume the BotW Remaster would be handled internally if Nintendo has been using it to demo the Switch 2 to developers.

DKC Returns HD and Luigi’s Mansion HD, for example, were both outsourced.

Series S has the same CPU as Series X and PS5. Switch 2 is going to have a fraction of that. This is going to be Switch all over again, with people praising the few miracle ports of games such as Witcher 3 and Doom Eternal, that are simply unplayable in their current states.

Why no gta5 on the switch then??
ITs a ps3 game.
Was released in multiple versions by now.

Yet no switch version.

no. typical Nintendo move is to work on new games for the new system.

And that's fine, but man, have some team enhancing some of your older games, especially those of deserving way better hardware. Both open world Zelda games aren't exactly pleasing on the eyes on a large screen.

Yeah, good point, sigh. After what Xbox did with those free patches I was hoping Nintendo would do something similar, but I shall not get my hopes up.

I’d assume it’s to do with GTA Online. Didn’t they discontinue the PS3/360 versions of that a long time ago?

It’d obviously be able to run if they’re able to port RDR.

Can you guys imagine the switch 2 will release close to the new xbox handheld or the new steam deck or what evrr else is coming out this year?

Yeah nintendo should release this thing right now

the size. Probably not the best idea to drop a 100+gb game on switch

the Switch could handle the singleplayer GTAV campaign but i'm assuming that Online is where it gets tricky, and since that's Rockstar's main moneymaker they never bothered. Really lame but it is what it is

It's like Xbox One launch all TV TV nfl TV Netflix and then they did the games stuff later...

I honestly think none of those will be of any threat to Switch 2. Switch 2 will probably sell more in a single year than the SteamDeck 2 will do lifetime.

Interesting.

I would say gta5 is way more demanding than rdr.
But you might be right though there is no reason not to release a offline version like it was the ps3 originaly.

How many copies of rdr got sold on the switch? Maybe if that number is low mqybe they didnt care to port gta5 over

I mean I’m no developer, I’m just assuming they’d be able to get it going if they truly wanted to.

Not sure about RDR. But I recall reading that Switch was the second biggest platform in Europe for the GTA Trilogy release, and that game did huge numbers. So there should be incentive there.

Games with 120 FPS modes should be able to be brought straight over for 30 FPS play, assuming that the Switch 2's CPU will be around 1/3 of the other consoles. And I guess it will be a case by case basis as to whether games with 60 FPS modes are viable on the Switch 2, since in a lot of cases these modes will be GPU limited still at 60 FPS. While the Switch 1 didn't have the option of halving the FPS since games were made for 30 FPS already.
