I thought microsoft didn't go to CES anymore or was it they didn't want to give the keynote anymore?

They didn't do their annual keynote anymore and opted for specialized events for their teams when they have something to announce, rather than being semi forced to work towards CES...

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
So are games going to be digital only? What does this mean for us bomba shoppers?

No way this is digital only, unless Sony wants an immediate failure on their hands.

Goddamit this thread is so dry. We need new leaks already :(.

I've only heard bits and pieces, no matter how many scotch and sodas I buy.

Certain devs working on titles not for current gen have production milestones in August. They are apparently under "enormous pressure" by internal tech teams to make sure these milestones are hit. So far, the state of the toolsets has meant delays, however, these are "coming along in leaps and bounds" and hope remains that these targets will be reached.

Performance specs are still in a state of flux although narrowing constantly. I have taken this to mean that the specifications are still being finalised, but a performance range is being targetted. 1080p60 is most definitely being pushed internally.

Specs also currently include a discrete gpu. Whether this is to bolster performance to match that from an unreleased customised AMD chipset, I don't know. I also don't know which gpu. I also do not know the performance level of the current kits, however devs working with them are extremely happy with how they are working and say that performance levels are increasing with each iteration.

Sounds good and what I expected to be honest! It seems the software dev have started sooner than previous gens (with work on unfinalized hardware)?

Oh and thank you!

Good. GOOD. GOOD.

1080p60f i hope is not a forced standard!
If it's any kind of standard it'll just be for first party developers. Even then, I bet devs like Guerrilla and Naughty Dog will be able to target 30fps if they hit a high enough level of visual fidelity.

I do want 1080p to be significantly more common than 720p was this gen and of course I want 60 as much as possible but I've given up much hope of that on consoles. If a game is 30fps though I want a rock solid 30 and no tearing.

In terms of AA I can see SMAA becoming pretty common given that it's so low impact and doesn't blur much. Nice coverage at 1080p too.

Wait are you talking about the PS4? The 720? Or both?

Just the main keynote.
This is what they said about it:

We’ll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won’t have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing.
Source: http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsof...12-marks-final-ces-keynote-for-microsoft.aspx

Sony on the other hand has eight exhibitor booths as well as two meeting suites at CES 2013. While CES isn't gaming, Sony usually focuses on at least one gaming component. Last year it was the PS Vita. Their keynote is usually streamed live on the PlayStation Blog.

“VGA Ten” will provide a sneak peak of the next generation of gaming, so who knows what will happen at CES 2013 (which is held January 8 - 11). Of course you have to account for a potential PlayStation Meeting. The 2011 version was held on the 27th of January. There's also GDC 2013, which could be a true premiere event, in terms of general development, for both Orbis and Durango.

Does this pertain specifically to the PS4 or just the broad "next gen consoles"? I just ask because all I hear is stuff for Durango and not really anything for the PS4.

I'll bet that there will be no mandates on developers pertaining to resolution or fps past a few years when the system starts to churn out visuals that can be accentuated further by reducing the resolution to 720p.

The only mandate I'd like ALL DEVELOPERS to abide by is to implement some form the AA for their games.

An anecdote: Given I wanted to play Halo 4, I thought it would be best to start off by playing all the games in the franchise first (save Halo 1 and 2 for original xbox whose playthrough I saw on Youtube). I started chronologically and Reach was the first. Going from Reach to ODST (and Halo 3) was like a transition from playing a Xbox 360 game to a game that's between Xbox and Xbox 360 in visual fidelity with serrated edge aliasing (it was horrible).

So for the first generation Xbox 3 or PS4 games 1080p60fps is indeed a possibility with the games looking like they belong somewhere between PS3 and PS4 with high resolution. But as the system approaches its twilight years, I am sure both resolution and fps will be sacrificed to their base standards in order to produce some really next gen visuals.

I'd love AA for all games, but it won't happen.

Unlike MS, Sony have some big games pencilled in for next year, which I can see being used to drive one more holiday period. My gut feeling is 2014, start of Q2. If it releases earlier, then I'd expect to see it land in the US and maybe Japan in Q4 2013, with the EU to see it in 2014 based on the likelihood that the PS3 will continue to do good business in PAL land in the mean time.

Almost every Sony developed game besides the of The Last of Us and possibly one of those newly announced titles from Japan is expected to release within the first few months of 2013, while MS don't have any internal titles they have Gears of War Judgement that is also supposed to be out in March.

Unless they announce something at the VGAs neither seemingly have any games that are being developed to arrive after the first 6 months of next year on current generation platforms as all their big studios have moved on, a few quite a while ago.

Pertaining to the price, hypothetically, if there was a high price tag, say $550 (for the upper end model) would it really matter if there was subscription model or instalment pay options past the initial downpayment threshold of say $250-300?

The last of us is coming out between Q1-Q2 iirc, not holiday 2013. The well of games will be drying up on schedule to pave the way for PS4.

I really hope SuckerPunch is involved in something next gen.

If someone offers me a console that has 8GB of RAM, is locked at native 1080p/60fps for all software, has on-board AA for consistent clean look across every title, independent high end CPU+GPUs, free online network w/ multiplayer and party chat, bluetooth, WiFi, Blu-ray, always on, seamless background downloading and installing of all updates and content, cloud storage and on-demand streaming of demos, movies and trailers, ability to multitask any feature of the OS... what would I be willing to pay for such a beast?

I have no idea, but I do know that I'd really want it, regardless of the sticker price, lol.

I would pay 350€ for the cheapest SKU, especially if I can manually upgrade HDD and install all BD games on it.

Anything above that... will most probably cause me to wait pricedrops.

I sincerely hope there is ONE SKU. Go all-out. Don't cater to the lowest common denominator. Go big or go home.

PS3 had a good tactics, both SKU's with HDDs providing consistency for developers.

X360 on the other hand had lot more restrictions for devs. Anyone remembers time when XBLA games had 50MB size limit? :D

Well the only difference would, "superficial" things that aren't integrated with the motherboard.

I am certain it'll be things like more USB ports, HDD space.

That said, here's me hoping that unlike Nintendo, Sony doesn't pull a dick move and remove Ethernet and optical output ports.

The Wii never had Ethernet plug or optical output ports so they didn't remove anything.

I disagree. They removed features as time went on. That's never a positive thing.

When my fatty died, I was sad, not because I had to buy a new machine, but because I had to buy a lesser machine.

My PS2 collection collects dust these days, and I can't plug in all my gadgets anymore. :(

I am talking about the WiiU. One would expect those amenities to be standard for a console being touted as a multimedia machine in 2012. MS pulled the bullshit with Xbox 360 (I had to buy a specific adapter without which I couldn't plug in the optical and the HDMI simultaneously).

These are the hardware features that are or should be basic to any system being promoted as a multifuctional multipurpose multimedia machines.

That wish list just gave me a hard on, seriously. One can hope...
