Weekend actuals put Fate of the Furious below 100 for the weekend domestically. If they over-estimated in other territories too then it didn't break the record.

I thought we already went through this?

It seems like it still squeezes by for the record, but a much much narrower win

The first film made a billion in three weeks and it had what will be a fraction of Avatar 2's hype behind it. I'm picturing you on a "team" of one lonely person standing on a sideline.

There is a 0 percent chance Avatar 2 will have more hype than Avatar 1.

Majority of Avatar 1's hype was new Cameron IP and 3D hype.

Avatar 2 hype will be... a sequel to a mediocre movie from 10+ years ago that no one remembers.

Man this is Box Office GAF

It's all about the numbers

THIS IS BOX OFFICE GAF!

I'm referring to as the release nears. Do you think Avatar 2 will debut with less than Avatar's $77m? That's a pretty low bar.

it'll absolutely open higher, no doubt.

avatar had the most fucked up crazy legs of all time thanks to "omg you gotta see this movie in 3D" word of mouth. 0% chance avatar 2 will have that unique WOM unless they start giving out VR headsets by the time it finally comes out in 2022.

it'll probably hit 1 billion if china don't care. which, admittedly, there's a pretty good chance of happening >_<

Right. That's the argument for Avatar 2 not topping Avatar 1 in total lifetime box office. But it's definitely not an argument for Avatar 2 cratering to sub-$1b, which is what kicked off that chain of posts. (It won't need China's help to top $1b.)

My entirely off the cuff prediction for Avatar 2 is that it'll have an almost identical run to Rogue One domestically.

Overseas I have no clue. I'll probably just roll dice to figure it out when it finally releases.

GAF's general dislike of Avatar in no way correlates to the public's feelings toward the film. Anyone that thinks it doesn't hit a billion is crazy.

By the time Avatar 2 releases, Rogue One will probably adjust to TFA numbers :p

EDIT: Your Name showed up in the actuals, down close to 60%. Not all thst surprising for a super limited release with no marketing. Those who knee what it was went last weekend.

The <$1B WW Avatar 2 people will be closer than those last year who had Independence Day Resurgence over $400M domestic.

Cameron will put out an Avatar that's the first Virtual Reality movie and all will bow before him as it breaks $5 billion.

I agree with you about the quality of Avatar, but there's no way that movie doesn't make a ridiculous amount of money.

Hollywood Reporter has some interesting stats on F8 vs. F7:

Another big difference between the two films: Fewer females in North America turned out to see Furious 8 on opening weekend. Universal estimates that male ticket buyers represented 58 percent of the audience, compared with 51 percent for both Furious 7 and Furious 6.

The fan base is also aging in North America. Moviegoers under the age of 25 made up 50 percent of Furious 8's audience, compared with 64 percent for Furious 7 and 54 percent for Furious 6. And moviegoers between the ages of 13 and 17 made up just 14 percent of ticket buyers, compared with 17 percent for Furious 7.

Avatar 2 is going to drop from the first, maybe by close to a billion, but those thinking under $1b ww are insane.

Avatar is pretty cool and judging by this thread it seeks like some people are gonna actually be mad when the sequel takes off.

Someone in the other Fate of the Furious WW record thread was claiming that they thought that the series was direct-to-video. In comparison, being mad that the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time makes money at the box office almost makes sense.

Anyhow, we have another 125+ box office threads to fight over Avatar 2 before it releases, so I vote for moving on.

Anyone want to put a guess on Fate of the Furious' final WW tally? I can tell you that the domestic total will most likely fall between $220-250M if that helps.

Even BvS legs would get F8 to $1.1B, so that's surely the minimum. The other film that comes to mind when I think of movies that had enormous WW launches due to release virtually everywhere at once is Spider-Man 3; those legs would get F8 to $1.24B, which I think sounds pretty good.

It will make less than the first, but still come up over TFA. Have faith in ehwaaaaaa

I doubt it will be over $2b. The combination of far less favorable exchange rates and near-guaranteed drop in domestic makes it seem too unlikely for me, even with China's growth.

Edit: Didn't refresh so I missed the order to move on. FORGIVE ME T_T

Wow, Ghost in the Shell is crazy successful on the international market, it just has made as much money world wide in about 20 days as John Wick 2 did in 66 days.

In a lot of markets it is still ahead of Ant-Man I wonder how much money it will make in total. Casting Scarlett seemed really worked out, else it would have ended like Power Rangers.
Amazing.

F8 probably lands at like 1.1 billy but anything over 1 and they should be pretty stoked considering that'll be second highest by a large margin

I want Sculli and (insert Star Wars fan here) to fight

When you put it like that. Avatar 2 should top Jurassic World and Star Wars 7.

Truth be told I don't like defending Avatar but saying no one remembers it? Tell it to Disney; they invested big time on a Pandora attraction.

I think that $1.1B is pretty safe. Even with mediocre legs, China + US will be close to $600M. You're already pretty close to $850M just adding in the rest of the first WW weekend. Overseas minus China could end up with a 2x opening weekend multiplier and still hit your $1.1B.

EDIT: I think that Japan is going to determine whether Fate of the Furious or Beauty and the beast grabs the #2 worldwide spot this year. That race is still up in the air. BatB should end up with Civil War numbers before counting Japan.

Somebody said Furious 7 opening weekend was about $475m if you aligned the China and Russia openings to the same weekend. That means F8 comparatively got about 90% of Furious 7's opening.

If that holds for the rest of its run, and keeping in mind that Furious 7 opened on a Sunday in China, it's looking at $1.3-1.4b worldwide. I'm not sure it'll keep steady for its run, but then again, I only expected it to barely hit $1b before it opened.
