Game Informer:

The first thing you’re likely to notice is the visual upgrade from 720p and 30 frames per second to 1080p and 60 frames per second (though you can lock things down at 30 FPS should you choose). Naughty Dog tells us that character textures have been increased by a factor of four, shadows have been doubled (along with a new lighting process), and draw distance is noticeably better.

Motion blur when turning the camera (used to hide slower loading textures) has been significantly reduced, but not eliminated. The game’s gritty, destroyed environments look crisper, which was even more pronounced in the side-by-side comparison. It looks spectacular.

With The Last of Us Remastered’s PS4 release just weeks away (July 29th), I dove into a pre-release version of the game to see exactly how Naughty Dog is leveraging PS4’s hardware to upgrade last year’s biggest Game of the Year winner.

First, there’s the immediately noticeable bump in native screen resolution. The jump from 720p (PS3) to native 1080p (PS4) gives the visuals a major shot in the arm. The crisp new presentation banishes those nasty jaggies to the margins, while higher resolution environment textures adorn the lovingly crafted post-apocalyptic environments.

The demo station at Sony's press event yesterday had The Last of Us running side by side on PS3 and PS4, and we watched the cutscene of Joel, Ellie and Bill arriving at Bill's safehouse playing on both versions simultaneously. (The playback didn't quite sync up, since the video loaded more quickly on PS4.) The higher-fidelity backgrounds were just as impressive as, if not more so than, the improved detail in the characters themselves. The light-up beer signs on Bill's walls; the fliers affixed to his bulletin board; the local map he showed to Joel and Ellie — all of them simply looked clearer on PS4, and we were able to make out finer details on them.

"We up-resed textures, we also turned on various graphics features that, on the PS3 we could only afford to turn on here and there in certain spots where it really offered bang for the buck, and in some cases those are turned on across the board now, like the bounce light from the flashlight," Gregory said. "There's better anti-aliasing. Just a host of graphical improvements that bring a lot of crispness and additional quality to the look of the game."

The 30 fps lock is very strange indeed. I hope that doesn't mean the frame-rate is unstable.

Very cool, I still never played TLOU for the PS3 so I'm definitely going to get it for the PS4. Managed to stay away from spoilers this long

Best case scenario, it's for people who don't care about framerate.

Btw, watch this getting GOTY awards... (That's be stupid, IMO.)

If I were to guess, the framerate will be like the Tomb Raider release on PS4, where it mostly stays in the 40-60 range, depending on what's going on.

The lightbar will signal health, with healthy blue scaling to orange when injured and red when critical.
Hmm I kind of wish it would have been dark blue, and then change to a bright white when the flashlight was on.

What else could this mean?
Still waiting for DF article, GI's is a joke (like they can't see difference with their own eyes, ND need to tell them)

For those that want to play with some additional insight, you'll be able to turn on commentary. Creative director Neil Druckmann and Troy Baker go behind the scenes as you're playing.

Nice!

i wouldn't be surprised if it is, considering how good looking the next uncharted is at 60 FPS its not a top tier port job if this is true. the PS4 should probably handle it with ease.

I can't imagine a reason you'd offer such a feature unless it wasn't stable.

Maybe they offered it for people who feel like 60fps is "weird" for a game like this? Maybe.

If the frame rate is anything like to Tomb Raider's remaster was, that'll be perfect for me. That game was a joy to play.

I wonder if there are any benefits visually by locking it down?

That's a great question. You'd imagine they could at least just throw on some more AA when they had more room to spare.

Is there anything to indicate it's not stable 60 fps, yet? With all the people whining about how 60 fps "feels weird", isn't it possible this is just an option to have those people be quiet?

Some ND employees apparently said they prefer 30 so I think the option is for people who like it at 30 with 60 also being locked.

I wish they had confirmed whether the 60fps was an actual constant 60fps... Oh well we'll to wait for Digital Foundry.

I never played the game so I hope this turns out to be the definative version that I can pick up in a couple of years, but it seems strange there are not a lot of official screenshots or footage so potential buyers can see for themselves.

Wow I guess getting the season pass payed off.

Horde mode DLC pls ND!

Also Photomode was confirmed too

Horde mode would actually be amazing in this game - it would be incredibly tense with the Stalkers and Clickers running at you, with their one-hit-kills. Scrambling to lay down mines and scavenge ammunition in the few seconds of quiet in between rounds and then getting back to safety to craft quickly would be superb. Make it happen ND!

the definitive version of TB had massive visual upgrades, improving the draw distance and texture filter + adding some high quality textures is not enough to justify a variable framerate.

I'm really really hoping for that to be the case but that seems like a strange decision.

We'll see, though.

I'm actually FOR for devs to add "cinematic mode" to their games. It would contain a lower framerate, cropped image, blur effects, post processing filters, AA and camera dirt. Then the actual "game mode" would be free of that crap.

That's what I am thinking. Or; it doesn't seem unlikely at all that they kept the 30 fps lock for a more cinematic feel.
