i can't believe phil kollar promised this would be big. scoundrel.

Didn't you catch his post a page back? He never said that, GAFfers made it up!

I'm excited for a South Park game done right, but not sure Obsidian can deliver. It seems to me that what people most look forward to in their games is the atmosphere and dialogue and stuff like that, and with Trey and Parker writing the game I'd rather have a developer who can ship a game that isn't a buggy mess.

Wow I must've missed the big hype train or whatever since there seems to be a fair few disappointed posts in here but i'm stoked! Love South Park and am happy to hear they'll have the creators overseeing development, hope it turns out well :)

Obsidian demonstrated that ability with Dungeon Siege III. I'm not going to piss in your face and tell you it's raining, they've made some shockingly buggy games, but they're not completely incapable of producing something polished.

Ignore the backwards thumb.

I don't know about how buggy it is, but I haven't heard too much positive about DSIII.

I haven't played it, but from what I understand its kinda meh because they went out of there element and tried to make a loot whore game, and it just ended up being kinda generic, also they fucked up the co-op.

I'm not saying it's a glorious triumph in gaming, but it's certainly polished. It's not even a bad game, just totally lacking the ambition of Obsidian's other titles, which as EviLore pointed out is usually the case with super-polished WRPGs.

Personally I'd rather they make a really incredible, unique and original RPG which has a few bugs, but I don't think that's necessarily going to be the case. They might make something quite polished and by-the-numbers, but even then I'd expect that the direction from Parker and Stone will make it worth playing.

Can someone explain why this is bad news? All I see are positives.

There's a 0% chance this won't bomb. Nobody asked for or wants this game, even if it turns out to be good. Asking full price for a game based on this concept is insane. Whoever greenlit this should be fired immediately. If the game has to exist, it should be a downloadable title at most.

And there's a very slim chance this will turn out to be worthwhile. If the game were tailored and structured to feel like its own original, extended episode of the show, it could be amazing. But it's going to be filled with lame fanservice and endless allusions to things from pre-existing episodes, just like almost all games based on shows.

I can just see Cartman now, activating some sort of power-up and screaming, "Respect my authori-tah!" as he mows down enemies with his nightstick. Maybe they eat Cheesy-Poofs to regain HP, too! HA HA JUST LIKE IN THE SHOW GET IT?! That's the kind of shit we'll get, almost guaranteed, and there's nothing clever about that. Just a serious of "I recognize that!" moments strung together.

Do Parker and Stone have any idea what would make a good game? A good RPG? What do I care if they're overseeing the production, then? Plenty of good writers have helped make forgettable or horrible games.

This entire project has "bomb" written all over it, a huge, pointless waste of money on a project nobody asked for, nobody is anticipating, and nobody will buy. It will litter bargain bins months after release.

I want to be wrong about all of this, but... I just can't see it working. All I can think about is the earlier SP games (all trash) and also how hyped some people were for Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood ("A great IP paired with a talented developer is sure to result in a classic!").

That's a shitload of meaningless text considering you don't know anything about the game.

I love South Park and I love RPG's but Im not sure if this union will work out.
It could be hilarious though, if the South Park versions of Tom Cruise, Bono, Mel Gibson, Jesus and Mohammed make it into the game.
Also, Randy Marsh should feature heavily

The last South Park game was a decent title, for its genre, and the string of bad SP games happened over a decade ago. Tower defense and the upcoming XBLA game both had their own original plots so I don't think this game will be any different.

Pffffttttt, yeah. It will come out and be game of the year. Licensed games, especially those based on South Park, have always been quality.

They've got a hell of a lot to prove here and you know it.

I wonder if they'll hire extra voice actors, I don't know if I could take 40+ hours of Trey's Secondary Male Character voice.

Trey's "secondary voice" consistently keeps me in stitches. I can't articulate why.

If he sings during the game, the soundtrack at least will be worthwhile.

They hardly need Parker and Stone for that.

edit: Also, some GI guy makes a good point in the comment section:

Obviously, this does not mean that they will succeed with the game, especially considering how much different a video game is to a show compared to a musical. Also, for all we know, that Parker and Stone are involved might just be a pr spin to sell more copies. We don't know. We do not know anything at all. It could be bad, it could be good, it could be awesome.

That's a shitload of meaningless text considering you don't know anything about the game.

Yup, nothing but assumptions. I would not be surprised if it bombs, but I hope not. There are people that are excited for this, I am one. For others just browse through the thread.

Getting a little defensive?

No, he's absolutely right. Nobody knows anything about the game yet, not really, and the examples given show somebody who clearly hasn't watched South Park in a long, long time. I think it's fair to suggest that people wait for information rather than hyperbolically assuming that the game will be something it could very well not be.

I'm a huge current South Park fan. But I have no faith the show's magic can be adapted into a game without falling into the same pitfalls almost all licensed games do.

Yes but this statement has nothing to do with the shitload of text you typed before that. Pretty much every single one of your points are conclusions based on practically nothing. We have not seen any screens from the game, we don't know what the execution is like. We don't know anything.

Getting a little defensive?

Defensive about what? I don't even like South Park.

Re: this sort of licensed game sucking, that's a fair assessment really, but Obsidian doesn't really make cash-ins, so I'm going with the assumption that it'll be a legit attempt at least.

I think they could do it. Some of their best episodes are satire on video games. Like the WoW or Guitar Hero episodes. They we're great and didn't devolve into "Hey, this happens in video games, isn't that funny?" like the Simpsons game episodes. If they can tweak their humour so it's structured well it'll be great.

Well, I'm not really excited for the announcement, but the reactions are entertaining at least!

EDIT: That quote above makes me wonder if Avellonemancers are hidden between us.

I'll be honest, it's been years since I have watched South Park. This could be potentially very awesome.

Well they have done movies and theater. Clearly they understand multiple mediums.

Don't people commend Obsidian for their dialogue and writing all the fucking time in this forum? Parker and Stone may not have an idea about what makes a good game but thankfully they're not the only ones there. They can help with the humor, world, and characters while Obsidian does the building blocks, quest design, and other gameplay components.

I don't even like South Park that much but this is a day one purchase easily.

Obsidian = easily the best North American RPG developer right now.

Keep crying about bugs you hypocrites, yet y'all eat up Bethesda games

Jesus, this forum. I saw the thread title, was super hyped and came into this thread full of lols, rage and wtf.

This is already one of my most anticipated titles for next year on premise alone. There's so much potential for goodness, I hope they don't fuck it up.

The rage is DELICIOUS! OM NOM NOM NOM

Really hope Obsidian will go crazy on this, taking stabs at current wrpg conventions and a parody of the "romantic" mechanics we see so often now. And I want a Bobby Kotick cameo, seeing how Satan is on the cover he would do a nice new bitch for him in place of Saddam. Not happening though lol.

i can't wait to see the moral choices between siding with the stupid left or right which are exactly as stupid as eachother and the noble, enlightened libertarian middle.

lol that's probably my only concern here. South Park was funny but all it's political preachiness got on my nerves and I stopped watching, hopefully they get reined in on that shit for this game.
