I have no problem with 3 new games with quite different gameplay styles, so I'm going to hold off on calling the overdone flag. I like the style of these environments more than those of Crysis 2. :)

Me too, just cracking a joke about how the concept art coming out for all of these games is looking samey. There's one more I know that looks like this, an indie game I think, but I can't think of it at the moment.

The environment looks fantastic. It appears as if they're going for a blend of New York and jungle this time with a destroyed city. I really like the idea and can't wait to play it!

dem bullshots... oh, wait, PC version!
Ha ha, not quite. Even the best AA solutions available while running DX11 Crysis 2 can't yield image quality on par with those shots.

Those screenshots hardly make it look like Crysis 2. The destroyed city look is pretty different.
From Crysis 2 but not from a load of games coming out using the same environment idea. I think they're just re-using a lot of Crysis 2 art assets, and that's the main reason for it being set in New York again.

Looks pretty damn good. Maybe WiiU will get an exclusive spinoff Crysis game. Or maybe WiiU is getting nada lol.

If the dude has a nanosuit that grants him super strength, then he'd be able to use a compound bow made of stronger materials so an arrow shot from it would hit way harder than an arrow from a regular bow.

A non enhanced human wouldn't be able to use the bow.

A normal arrow can penetrate materials that are bullet proof even. People are underestimating that bow :) And yeah it's going to be enhanced for sure. God I love bows in games.

Seriously. The reason the bow was supplanted as a military weapon was not for lack of killing power. Automatic rifles are massively superior as overall weapons, but I spent Crysis 2 killing aliens with a fucking knife, so this is the least of my Suspension of Disbelief concerns.

They better put some polish on this one. If they leave a simple bug like levels not starting properly in MP not interested. The same could be said for console commands and the garbage mouse support.

Here's a tip crytek take after valve or the first title. Don't take out commands simply lock them out of multiplayer like valve does unless an admin allows them in. Also use real mouse support it's clear from games with raw input that this title has jittery laggy feel which the first didn't.

Players take on the role of ‘Prophet’ as he returns to New York, only to discover that the city has been encased in a Nanodome created by the corrupt Cell Corporation

Source? As far as I know, a arrow isn't ever going to reach the speeds and/or kinetic energy of a lead bullet.

RH: The game plays out several years after the end of Crysis 2. Cell has built incredibly huge Nanodomes over several capitals around the world to protect the Earth’s population from Ceph remains – as well as cleaning up the environment and rebuilding the cities. Or at least that’s what they say they are doing…

You play as Prophet who is getting seriously fed up with being kicked around and he wants to do what is right. He’s taking matters into his own hands and he has a strong goal – one I cannot talk about now. But as part of succeeding with this, he will take on Cell as well as the Ceph and avenge the past. In doing this he partners up with a usual suspect of the Crysis franchise – Psycho aka Sergeant Michael Sykes, who we all remember from Crysis 1 and Crysis Warhead.

GC: After the success of Crysis 2 how did you set about reassessing the franchise and what did you feel were the most and least successful aspects of the last game? And how in turn has this informed Crysis 3?

RH: With Crysis 3 we wanted to combine the best aspects of Crysis 1 and 2 and add on top of that. You can certainly say that it builds on the foundation of the series - we have a lot of the wide gameplay from the original Crysis and a lot of the verticality of Crysis 2 and that we combine in a really stellar and beautifully unique setting – the New York City Liberty Dome that introduces the Seven Wonders and creates a real urban rainforest complete with jungles, swamps, grasslands, canyons and more

more at the link..

I can definitely see them changing that box art before launch. Dude will probably end up in the middle of the screen aiming his bow down the camera.

GC: The high tech bow and arrows seems to be a prominent part of the game, so what's the story behind that? Is it now the primary weapon and what advantages does it have over firearms?

RH: There is no primary weapon but the bow is a cool new addition and it goes well with the whole concept of going back to the roots which is a theme that resonates across the game. There are plenty more cool new weapons in the game – and this time, you will even be able to use alien weaponry. That’s pretty fantastic.

People really overestimate the power of bulletproof vests. They're designed specifically for high impact from small, blunt objects. Anything sharp, even a knife, can penetrate a bulletproof vest because it cuts right through the fibers. It won't be very effective against a razor tip with roughly the same momentum as a Magnum bullet.

Source? As far as I know, a arrow isn't ever going to reach the speeds and/or kinetic energy of a lead bullet.

It won't reach the same speed, but an arrow is over 4 times heavier than a small bullet so it only needs to move at a quarter of the speed to have the same momentum. It still won't have the same kinetic energy but it can still cause a hell of a lot of damage, especially since an arrow is much sharper than a bullet.

gotta ask, there was some controversy re: crysis2 and sales and piracy/or console version hijinks at launch; but did it rally to become a hit?

They should wait until end of 2013 and release with next gen :/

At the rate they are going they will have Crysis 4 ready by then. Hope this game runs better on consoles this time. Amazes me that some people can't get over the bow, it looks pretty fucking cool to me. Single shot weapons can often be heaps of fun to use in FPS games.

Who knows. I remember Crytek saying that officially it sold according to plan, but secretely they had hoped for more.

Apparently it did well enough. It's one of those games I would expect to have a longer shelf life than most as well, especially on PC, where it's still a showcase type game that people will probably buy for years, or at least until Crysis 3 comes out.

I want to say 1.5 million?

Edit: apparently 3 million as of July 2011 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-26-crysis-2-racks-up-three-million-sales

For all the money that this polish costs they could probably create 5 more preorder packages.
I don´t see any reason to actually want proper input when i could have one more bullshit package. Also, they sure are milking this cow now. Mixing Crysis 1 & 2 assets feels like they are pulling an Activision. Although those assets look a lot better than those in Call of Duty :p

But it has mass several times bigger then a bullet.
But yeah is it enough Muzzle speeds of a m16 is 853+m/s or something like that.
Wiki says a compound bow shoots arrows at 113m/s so if im not mistaken a arrow need to weight about 8^2 to deliver the same amount of kinetic force that is not taking drag into account. So arrows of 4kg or so. But then if you have like 1 meter arrows they will hurt like hell and probably have different damaging effect on the body.

It won't reach the same speed, but an arrow is over 4 times heavier than a small bullet so it only needs to move at a quarter of the speed to have the same energy. From what I understand an arrow from a strong compound bow (330+ feet per second) is comparable to most handguns. There are other factors too, but in terms of raw energy they aren't that far apart.

speed is quadratic unless im confused kinetic energy = 0.5*Mass * velocity^2.
Has been 2 years i used those formulas.

quoting from wikipedia

Firearm Caliber ft-lbf joules
air gun spring .177 15 20
air gun mag spring .22 22 30
air gun PCP .22 30+ 40+
pistol .22LR 117 159
pistol 9 mm 383 519
pistol .45 ACP 416 564
rifle 5.56 × 45 mm 1,325 1,796
rifle 7.62 × 39 mm 1,527 2,070
rifle 7.62 × 51 mm 2,802 3,799
heavy .50 BMG 11,091 15,037
heavy 14.5 × 114 mm 23,744 32,000

I've only found numbers in ft-lbf (aka retardo units) for compound bows but they go from 55 to 100 ft-lbf.

e:chances are they can handwave this as a super bow that can shot an arrow as strongly as a rifle, though.

A bit more about that Bow and Arrow from the Metro interview

GC: What other new weapons and equipment will feature in the game? And what sort of enemy forces will you be fighting against? Will it still be a mix of human and aliens?

RH: There are several new traditional weapons but more interestingly is the fact that you’ll be able to fire Ceph weapons. This really adds a cool new flair to the look and feel of the game. Also as mentioned earlier there is a bow featured which you can equip with several types of arrows – both stealthy and loud as hell.

Looks good.

C2 was pretty cool, even if I didn't have as much fun as I did with the original. Looking forward to this.

Yeah, I noticed that and meant to say momentum (which is just mass*velocity), but I was a little slow with the edit. Momentum is more directly correlated with impact than kinetic energy.

Considering that the regular lowly wood longbow defeated knights in plate armor, I wouldn't be surprised that a compound bow could penetrate bulletproof armor.

As far as I know, a arrow isn't ever going to reach the speeds and/or kinetic energy of a lead bullet.

It's not required to. Arrows are lower speed, but higher mass. Firearms have less momentum and higher kinetic energy, whereas arrows and crossbow bolts are higher momentum and lower kinetic energy.

The precise role of KE vs Momentum in armor penetration and wound creation is complicated and controversial.
