Mat Piscatella: Despite "a rocky couple of years" Xbox's "future is actually looking pretty bright"

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Mat Piscatella, executive director of games at Circana, discussed Xbox's past, present and future, believing that the company's favours are about to turn, partly due to strong PlayStation sales. "If you look at what's going on now in the sales, you look at like the PlayStation sales chart, you see a lot of Microsoft on there. And the more that they can broaden the appeal of their products, their IP across other platform holders, why not do that?"

For Piscatella, the key to Xbox's future is to embrace other platforms, rather than competing with them, and to ensure that even if console sales falter, as they have in recent years, they can still make up for that with sales of their games. "You look towards the future and some of the things they've talked about, expanding the reach of the Xbox brand well beyond the Xbox console is a key initiative and they're executing on that," he explains. "You look at their results in their earnings reports, and you go, okay, that looks pretty darn good, even though they recognize that console sales themselves are lagging for them. You look at it that way and the future is actually looking pretty bright, although, yeah, it's been a rocky couple of years for sure."

That’s IF Microsoft can CONTINUALLY execute with quality games from their acquisitions. and if history is to go by, Microsoft has a really bad track record with CONTINUALLY Executing with quality games after acquiring developers.

Because of that, maybe 2025 will be ok but what about 5 years from now?

Microsoft insists selling massive software on Playstation means they are winning the console war.

Until they actually do it. At that time, there will only be the software war.

It doesn't hurt to read just the first two lines of the OP to see what he's talking about.

The reason Mat is always positive or at least rarely to never says anything negative is that the Circana service is purchased/funded by Sony, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Warner Bros Games, and a few other large publishers and possibly some retailers. He isn’t a free thinking analyst. He’s beholden to his clients/benefactors. And while people may praise that Xbox financials are growing due to Activision Blizzard’s addition, basic math shows the combined Xbox+ABK business is less after the merger than it was prior by double digits.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Seriously, 2025 is gonna be a hell of year for Xbox and gamepass. Avowed, South of Midnight. Doom, Clair Obscur, Fable, OuterWorlds 2 and more. That’s one crazy ass year.

Some pretty good AA games in the first few months like Sniper Elite and Atomfall too.

We're eating good, bros. Just like last year and the year before and the year before and so on.

I was thinking the same thing. It literally gets said every year.

“This is going to be an amazing year for [Xbox/Playstation/JRPG fans] because here’s a list of games that might be good”

Half the time I feel like they’re trying to convince themselves lol
It is just marketing. They have to keep people engaged and talking about the games lineup, no matter what it is.

I'd say he's right that becoming a third party publisher is going to be more successful for them than focusing on GamePass and the Xbox Series.

That guy is pathological liar, and he is getting paid for it.
What is he lying about?
Sure, yeah, if by "Xbox" you don't mean the console but the publishing brand.
This is what he means. He expects their success to come from publishing games on other platforms, rather than from hardware sales.

There really is only one question left for MS to answer. Forward compatibility for current Xbox users.

We know they're pretty much the biggest publisher in the industry now with frequent high quality releases and the best sub service by far. They do well on PC and PS as well. All that's left is to complete that library transfer for people that have been with them for 20 years and then put out optional hardware sold for profit for the people who want it. After that they're positioned to do extremely well, no matter where the industry shifts - PC, cloud, or just selling on Playstation, handhelds or their optional box. All of the above.

All that's left is to pay out the publishers and complete the forward compatibility transfer, and upgrade the Windows interface to be as seamless and user friendly as Xbox. Then put everything on PS day 1 and those sales will go even higher.

Analysts said the same exact thing about Ubisoft. They’ve had a couple bad years, but their track record insists they’ll do well soon. Ok? They must be working with some impressive spreadsheets.

So basically he's saying the future is brighter as a third-party publisher.

That's about right.

It's like how Sega's future was brighter as third-party publisher.

What I find stupid is that people refuse to acknowledge that MS is making these moves, not because the industry is changing, but because MS failed to compete with Sony.
