Mat Piscatella: Despite "a rocky couple of years" Xbox's "future is actually looking pretty bright"

Sega was forced to abandon hardware because the SOJ was shooting themselves in the head with financial stupidity.

Trying to compare Sega to MS in 2025 is the height of ignorance and historical illiteracy.

It's comparable because they both need to become third-party publishers to remain successful in the gaming business or they'll continue to shoot themselves in the foot financially.

I wouldn't go around calling anyone ignorant when it's obvious MS wouldn't be in a good position if they continued to make games exclusive to Xbox/PC.

Again, this is ignorant to how the console market is in 2025 compared to 25 years ago. 25 years ago, the console market was growing. It's not growing like that anymore.

I don’t give a shit about how the Xbox is doing. All that matters to me is their games, and things are currently looking better than they have in a very long time.
Really? The last few years people were saying the same thing re. games like Halo, Starfield, and Forza.

Almost all Microsoft’s big games disappointed this gen, now people are clinging to hope that these B and C tier franchises are going to reverse Xbox’s fortunes.

Lol we’ll see. The only one I’m actually excited for is Doom. The others are firmly in “wait and see” territory.

They just released a game that every outlet that judges GOTY based on 12 months instead of 10 are declaring GOTY.

Halo/Forza has been old and stale for so long now. I’m glad we’re finally moving away to more interesting games like Indy, Avowed, and Outer Worlds 2. It feels like things are finally getting to where they should be.
Not saying everything’s perfect, but for the first time in a decade I actually want some of their games.

More Xbox games on Playstation where they actually sell. I'd be happy to if I was him

agreed but thats only because they bought so many devs. the core Xbox studios decided to stop making good games at some point besides Playground. i dont consider Doom to be an Xbox game for instance.

This one?

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appeared on several lists of the top video games of 2024, being ranked in sixth place by GamingBolt,[76]eighth place by the Associated Press,[77] and tenth place by The Guardian.[78]

Look I’m sure it’s a good game, I’ll play it at some point, but it barely moved the needle. It got like 1/30 the concurrent players on Steam compared to Starfield.

You can't blame the lack of console market growth on Microsoft's failures.

They put out an unappealing product for the past 11 years and that's why they're not growing.

Sony grew after the PS3 era.
Nintendo grew after the failure of the WiiU.
Microsoft has declined after the 360.

We know why Sony is behind the PS4 in sales this generation and that's because of the price of the console.

Instead of blaming the market, blame Microsoft for its failures.

Exactly. The market for $500 plastic boxes that play games has plateaued. It’s not growing. Either you release lower cost hardware or you find other ways for people to play your games.

That’s why both Sony and MS are making handhelds. And they won’t be $500.

Eurogamer and IGN are a bit more legitimate than the random geocities sites the warriors who edited Wikipedia found.

That's fine, but you've changed your criteria. What outlet besides Eurogamer has awarded Indy GOTY? IGN did not. Edge did not.

LMAO it wasn’t IGN’s 2024 Game of the Year, it was their “Best Xbox game of 2024”. Here was the competition (and Indy was the only one of these that was even a contender for the overall 2024 GOTY):

Best Xbox Game of 2024

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • Dungeons of Hinterberg
  • WINNER: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
  • Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
  • STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Congrats I guess

And that's not even relevant to what we're talking about.

Microsoft would've dropped out of the market if they didn't have a trillion-dollar company throwing billions within their division to help them stay afloat. Microsoft couldn't stay the same course unless they started putting games on other platforms. They're also going to continue to struggle if they don't see real Game Pass growth.

Yes, they will sell more in PS+Xbox than in Xbox alone, specially considering that PS has a way bigger userbase of players who are used to pay for games. It isn't rocket science.

Their console is pretty much done, but themselves as publisher and gaming company will heavily grow by expanding their focus to also cover PS, Nintendo and mobile.

But it's not 10 months. Funny how this narrative has taken ahold this year :messenger_smirking:. If it's good enough, it will be eligible for TGA 2025; Smash Bros did exactly that. But I doubt it will make the cut with how many bangers there are this year.

That’s hopium. MS has been producing consoles longer than Sega at this point. Sega only made consoles for 18 years. It’s been 23 years since the first Xbox.

It's like you're not even paying attention to the conversation and reacting based on emotions.

I said IF they didn't have a trillion-dollar company backing their vision, something Sega didn't have.

You're ignoring every single bad decision Microsoft made within the past 11 years and you're blaming it on the lack of growth of the console market.

Just admit Microsoft made terrible decisions for 11 years and that's why they failed to grow after the 360 generation.

I have rolled my eyes like everyone else at MS's annual ritual of "Wait till next E3/year." But to be fair, it has become believable now. After all, if you spend 80 billion dollars to buy up a huge range of developers/publishers, of course your game output will improve. It would be a stunning failure if it didn't.

It is long overdue, but I expect "Xbox" (the publishing brand) to be turning the corner soon. Actually, I expected it to happen a year or two ago, given that many of these acquisitions happened 4 years ago. It's taking a little longer than I'd expected, but with so many newly acquired studios, it was inevitable.

Seriously, 2025 is gonna be a hell of year for Xbox and gamepass. Avowed, South of Midnight. Doom, Clair Obscur, Fable, OuterWorlds 2 and more. That’s one crazy ass year.
Avowed, Outer Worlds 2 and Fable will probably go the path of Dragon' Age The Vielguard (out of touch DIE games witch not many people would want to play). In February Kingdome Come 2 and Avowed comes out. Not hard to guess whitch of this two games most people would like to play.

Doom doesn't look that good for me. Maybe it is just my preference. Doom will probably sell well.

And what the hell is Clair Obscur and South of Midnight, I don't even know. Are they Forspoken and Flintlock-type games?

So if things go as I think they will, then 2025 can only be carried by Doom for XBOX. And even in the best case, Doom won't attract tens of millions of players to save XBOX.

Seems like not a very bright future. Also, Black Ops 6 just came out, and the next CoD will probably be one of the bad ones.

Doom looks fantastic. As does Clair Obscur.

If Xbox was a Football team they would be the Cowboys. Have all the money in the world and It's their year every year but always fall short or completely fuck up.. but hey 2025 is their year. Colt is getting ready to release his hype video.

Clair Obscur is a JRPG inspired turn-based game from some new French devs. Visually it looks pretty cool, absolutely no idea if it’ll be any good though. It’s also coming to Steam and PS5.

Going forward, you can pick up one of many devices to access your Game Pass library. It gives them a whole new lease, carving out an entire new sector for themselves. Microsoft have lost the console wars, but they've now opened up something entirely different.
