I hate my logic here too, but I can't understand why Nintendo would hold out on showing and talking about their next generation hardware this long. I mean are they really only gonna give people 60 days to pre-order this device? Why only give people 60 days to talk about it and see it?

Seems odd to me.

Most consoles usually are sold out in the first months of release, so announcing 2 months or 2 years wouldn't make much difference.

It is a period in which schools in Japan, close the academic year, many consoles were launched during this time, mainly portable ones:

PS2 - March 4, 2000
Switch - March 3, 2017
GBA - March 21, 2001
GBA SP - February 14, 2003
NDS Lite - March 2, 2006
3DS - February 26, 2011
I see a pattern for success there…

I think is going to launch in June… March is not a bad month either. They are going to move more than 2 million Switch WW this December, so the announcement in January is expected.

I was feeling the same, just feels like something Nintnedo would do to release a new console for all the students getting out for summer break.

I could definitely be wrong though.

They should show Xenoblade X running on the 2 with higher res textures, 60fps, and 4K DLSS. Matter of fact do a quick little montage of all the Xenoblades getting a update.

Nintendo don’t need Holiday sales.

The new console will be huge no matter what they do. They could shadow drop a console and it would still blow up sales.

Say what you will about Nintendo but they have some of the best brand power possible and are coming off a complete monster of a product. There is no chance in hell it’s a Wii to WiiU transition.

Plus the Switch also came out in March of 2017. Apple also releases a lot of products in March. Some brands don’t need the holiday sales to be successful.

Also the shorter the announcement to release schedule the less sales they lose on Switch. They will get the top selling console of all time spot anyways but the extra 3 months basically secures it.

That'd be awesome. I still need to finish XC3 and I've been putting it off just to finish playing it on the next Switch. I'm on like, early chapter 3 and at that point probably just restart the game.

Because as I said in another post in this thread it doesn’t matter. This console is going to sell out without any effort being put in.

It’s like if Valve shadow dropped HL3. The word of mouth would fly so fucking fast that they would sell millions in a very short period of time.

Also, when you announce a new product your old product is not wanted by a lot of people so they are sacrificing more and more Switch sales they longer announcement to release is. Nintendo obviously wants that top selling console of all time crown.

It’s why Apple releases all of their products no longer then 2 weeks after announcement (I’m sure there are some exceptions but all major Apple devices come out a week from announcement). You sacrifice the least amount of sales you can even if it makes a small select few mad that they bought the old product right before the new one and it doesn’t matter whether people have 2 months or 9 months the device is going to sell out.

I mean Nintendo isn't shy about a successor. They confirmed it. They could announce it tomorrow or a month ago.

Do you think they will charge for updates? Would you be willing to pay if it's $5 -10?
New hardware gets me stupid, so... maybe. But on-principle, no.

I think improvements that come automatically from running on better hardware, like load times, etc., should be free. The only time a next gen update can really justify charging (on any platform) is if there is an actual investment on the dev's part. They need to have spent resources creating higher res testures, new lighting, or new content that, ideally, would only be possible on the new hardware.

I would love for them to lean on Nvidia's tech like adding RTXGI to the Zelda and Xenoblades.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
January 8th is on a Wednesday. They make major announcements on Tuesdays. With rare exceptions.

That already makes me write off this rumour. It's gonna be on a Tuesday. Thursday maybe..

I'm not

Those days are a long gone and most developers and publishers realize its silly to battle over those months.

Release in the wide open spring with less competition. The goal is to sell the most you can. (ironically Spring becoming the new fall)

They want to sell as many Switches to the masses this fall to fully sell out annnnnnnnnnd then release Switch 2 in spring. Because their portables have a history of releasing during this time frame, I don't see Switch 2 being any different.

I still doubt it’s a March launch since Nintendo states before during investor meetings that new hardware won’t launch in this fiscal year… which ends in March. So I think April or May would be more likely.

But anything is possible.

This. It might be announced in January, but it's not releasing in March.

I'm not saying it will be launched in March, but Nintendo never stated it wouldn't launch in this FY.

Uhh, the Switch 2 is guaranteed to sell out its initial production no matter what. Why do something that’s guaranteed while cannibalizing your holiday sales for Switch 1?

game consoles basically always sell out during launch. it's pretty much no real benefit to release around Christmas.

even the Wii U sold out at launch.

so does it matter if they sell all they can produce in December, or if they do it in March? I think not.

The marginal benefit to Switch 2 from a longer announcement-to-launch period (new consoles always sell out) gets trumped by the Osborne damage to Switch 1 sales.

It’s gonna launch on MAR10 alongside Mario Galaxy 3.

they do not want to cannibalize Switch 1 sales this holydays, they want to milk that cow to the last day
That's very likely the case and I've been saying the same, but OTOH my brain isn't computing why anyone remotely interested in the Switch wouldn't have bought one by now. I mean it's not like Nintendo has dropped the MSRP on anything to grab the late gen budget gamer holding off for either the right price or right software. Even for someone who doesn't spend hours soaking up gaming news and rumors, there's enough info channels out there nowadays that surely news of a looming Switch 2 release is known to any remotely interested party.

Nintendo's released new revisions of old consoles AFTER the release of the newer one.

Yes, but I'm not talking about lower cost revisions of a last gen device after the new one releases. I'm asking what would drive substantial sales of Switch now, 8 years in and still selling at full price, to any interested party unless they're living under a rock and have no clue that there is so much smoke around the Switch 2 that there is an obvious fire. This late in a gen, hardware and software are slashed enough to entice budget gamers especially; the Switch's success has meant Nintendo has managed to avoid that but generally speaking, anyone who's been interested in the Switch more than likely has one at this point.

We are day 1 Switch 2 in this house.

-The nvidia tech will be great and it’ll make this thing seem able to punch above its weight class.
-They care the least about the “modern audience” nonsense.
-They support physical and retail the most of all current companies.
