SFV R. Mika default costume was deemed too revealing by ESPN

All of the costumes in that game ate terrible so it's no surprise non-nerds would find them embarassing

Thst goes for the majority of games and anime. They will never lose their stigma of being aimed at horny virgins as long as garbage like this gets praised by people here.

Pretty much

My biggest problem is with the revealing ones being the DEFAULT costumes.

I mean Laura and Mika clothing makes no sense when you compare to reality.

Laura biggest problem is still her story mode outfit, but they both makes no sense even if only for the lack of bra that if anything, shows that the japanese dudes never saw a women

Thanks for the broad brush. I didn't realize I'm a "horny virgin."

They're in a game in which people can throw fireballs out of their hands...there is no reality to them.

I kinda feel like SF should be above this kind of shit, but I guess you do what you gotta do to move units.

R.Mika was pretty scantily clad in SFA3 but she also had personality, she wasn't just a boob monster. Cammy I guess has always been fan service. I dunno. I just like punching stuff. Don't make me feel embarrassed by being into your game.

Yes, and choosing which reality you ignore shows a lot about what message you wants to give to everyone.

Men have diverse clothing and diverse body. Women have sexy bodies and sexy clothing.

Which is cool. SFV is rated T for teen. If your child can't handle that, be sure to not let them play or watch it. This is why we have the ratings. And why SFV was on primetime TV. Starting at 7pm PST or 10pm EST.
TIL, kids don't watch prime time.
I will admit ..i don't watch wrestling on TV .. it's not part of my hobbies ..but i really have trouble seeing the difference between those 2 pictures

Imagine if Skullgirls or DoA5 was ever on ESPN. The executives would probably panic and shut everything down to protect the viewers eyes. Also yes underboob is the best boob angle followed by sideboob, thats my expert opinion.

I cannot believe we are rehashing the same shit again.

SFV really can't have any good press around here, eh?

Look. Its fine that ESPN made this choice. They are owned by Disney FFS. So as long as Capcom doesn't delete the costume...who cares.

That being said...its weird how passive agressive insults are allowed as long as they are hidden behind some bullshit cause. Just because you like the design doesn't make you a virginal POS loser. I cannot stand how that is allowed to go on in these threads constantly.

ALSO SF is not realistic. It never has. It never will be. So yes Mika's design is out there as fuck...that is legit the whole point of her character and SF itself. Most of the characters rae exaggerated larger than life stereotypes....that is the whole idea. You don't have to like it...which is fine..but understand the idea behind it.

Here's a quick photoshop edit showing how different the cut is. I think my edit is still too wide at the bottom of the window, but it should still be quite obvious.

R. Mika default outfit was a reflection of what Japanese female pro wrestlers wore. Someone posted pics in the OT. It's not randomly designed to appeal to men or boys only even if she just happens to exhibit all the usual personality quirks. They even took out the hearts designs from her boobs in SFV but wanted to retain the original SF Alpha look.

lmao it's just underboob vs cleavage. I guess underboob is fine for ESPN.

Though her story costume is superior to her default costume tbh.

Anytime someone does Laura's anti-air grab wearing the story mode costume, I can't help but think "how the hell are those things still in there?"

Then you obviously haven't play much SFV then.

Mika has a shitton of personality beyond boob monster.

Why must people shame anyone who likes things by basically calling them deviants while they act so superior. It pisses me off like no other. You don't like it. That doesnt make you better than anyone. Nor does it hurt gaming,

News Flash, the same idiots yall are so desperate to gain respect from..still think yal are nerds too. This weird idea that there is this big gap between gamers is annoying as fuck.

I suspected that Fuudo was forced to change costumes, after he went from Mikas sexy default to that more conservative, boring and ugly alt.
Even though the gameplay from the finals was great, the lack of sexy Mika combined with the abundance of Nash and Chun mirrors and the same fighting background being used all through, made it visually underwhelming.
You can see on the stream chat, many other people love seeing the sexy female outfits too.

They'd just need to buy some of the more modest clothing DLC (unless it's in the base game already) and turn down the jiggle in the options menu.
Then again, this outfit still shows female shoulders which, according to Nintendo, is not suitable for teenagers.

How does Skullgirls apply to this?

Dont see much in skullgirls to get upset about. The art in skullgirls is cartoonish as apposed to 3D models bouncing around all over the place.

This, she has tons of personality, you can see it by her VA, animations, quotes, story mode, she's quirky and fun, I bet half of the people in this thread haven't even played with this character.

Hey I am cool with this, as long as ESPN2 makes sure to raise a stink about Urien's default costume next year. Assuming it's the same as Third Strike

His manly ass is too much for TV to handle.
Urien's default costume is his suit, but he rips it off for his Critical Art.

Yup, while I can sympathise with the motivations behind some of the arguments, the holier-than-thou attitude and general twattishness they are made in is off-putting.

The people that say this typically are people who like to think they are somehow more superior and enlightened because they don't like these things than the people that do and cannot make actual arguments so they rely on petty insults by calling people virgins and man-children.

I'm fine with ESPN's decision and I like Mika's costume as well.

Mika is not an SFII character which was about stereotypical fighters from different countries.

She's an alpha character, the series that brought you stuff like Karin and Sakura flashing their panties during moves.

And the women in Skullgirls dont bounce or show off their bodies in any way cause theyre 2D? Come on.

There's plenty of jiggling boobs and panty shots in the game; don't see how it being cartoonish matters

Using the story costume instead of the default one made no difference in terms of the presentation being visually underwhelming.

I think there's a matter of "taste" beyond "offense." I love SF, but I think Mika's design is just awful -- partially due to the amateur way they pander with cheap sex appeal, but I wouldn't say I'm offended by it in the sense that I can't handle it. I'm not offended by nudity or showing skin -- as an artist, I've drawn nude figures myself and I think nudity is completely valid as a form of expression. I think games have every right and perhaps even an obligation to explore nudity.

Mika is a wrestler. Beyond the super big boobs (which are too big for her costume), her look fits right in with the rest of those pictures posted earlier. Costumes meant to show off muscles and have good visual appeal. Her costume isn't the greatest (Story 1 is better of course) but I think that's probably because Capcom chose to inflate everyone's chest by 200% =P Besides, your expression of nudity and another person's "cheap sex appeal" and "pandering."

Look, I like porn just like most guys. I get it. But when it comes to games as a medium, I want more. Games designed as softcore porn (or even actual porn) are fine -- that niche won't ever go away. But more broadly, as a medium, I want games to strive to be better -- part of that means escaping the sensibilities of 14 year old boys, as has been the focus for too many games for too long. DoA can do its thing, but SF presumably wants to be taken seriously beyond the niche of softcore porn and I want to support that -- I think games, SF included, have the potential to be enjoyed by a much wider audience -- part of that means SF ditching the cheap pandering and focus on actual good character design.

See, I was with you until now. First, if you're calling SFV "softcore porn," your criticisms will fall on deaf ears. Because its not that. Do you even know what that is? Cheesecake is not softcore porn. If so, ESPN themselves would be selling softcore porn magazines themselves.

Second, you assume SFV wants to be taken seriously beyond its niche. Does it? If it does, its design of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER would be different. Completely. Also, SF as a GAME would have to redesigned completely to be enjoyed by a much wider audience in 2016+ Was this Capcom's intent? Well, if so, it failed since it's barely, maybe, managed to hit 2 million sales by now? That's not very wide.

Third, I think people react the way they do towards criticism is how the criticism is done. There is a right way (a way that does not insult its fanbase or those who enjoy the game but concentrates on the game and design itself) and the wrong way (calling it softcore porn, 14 year old mentality, insulting its fans and so on).

For example, SFV on ESPN2. All last night, this forum and Twitter was ablaze of people who made fun of gamers who watched this on ESPN and even ESPN 2 for showing the game to begin with. These people insulted and criticized both the network and gamers alike for wasting their time or enjoying the game. Of course, gamers shot back and said "ACCEPT IT" and so on and looked at this as a sort of victory. Now the dust settles and we find that ESPN objected to an aspect of the game and some were like "Whoa now, wait a minute...you show questionable stuff too, how it this so bad?" and round and round it goes.

Personally, I think SFV and Capcom are trying to have their cheesecake and eat it too. Both sexes in this game flaunt their bare chests, boobs, legs, arms muscle power and asses. Capcom did this knowingly. They put out costumes that continue to do this. In the same breath, they made changes to certain things they thought might make people uncomfortable or offended. Some people, like yourself, say that Capcom has to make changes to be taken seriously. You also ignore that these characters and the game and all the cheap sex appeal that comes with them, has brought the game and EVO to ESPN to begin with. The community the game was made for accepted all of it and it has gotten this big. So, now what? What do we do now? Do they change everything to make it acceptable to the masses...while being a game that was NOT accepted by the masses to begin with? What would make it acceptable to the masses? Who do you please?

Or how about the easy way out? Put out free "competitive" costumes for every fighter that covers them up approprately that fits their character and mandates that these costumes must be used in tournaments. Then continue to appeal to whoever you wish to appeal to with paid costumes forever. =P

You're welcome Capcom. =)

Likewise, I'm tired of this persecution complex when people make their dislike for instances of sexualisation known, complete with exaggerations and deflections.

Pretty sure that's a PC mod or some sort of video edit. His suit does not come off if you do his CA in story mode, I'm 100% sure.
This was datamined. The only reason why it doesn't come off in Story Mode is because Urien has the suit in the following cutscene.

If you look at Urien's model in the files, his naked model overlaps his suit model.

This seems like a you problem then. So every game must appease your tastes or it is trash then? Look just because you don't like it doesn't make everyone who does wrong....it doesn't work that way. I have learned this weekend that a lot of people aren't even willing to compromise. Its always their way or the highway and if its the latter then whatever it is, is trash and should be relentlessly hated on. You aren't always going to get your way. Deal with it and keep it moving I(this goes both ways. Being forced to use the alt isn't the end of the world)

She's an alpha character, the series that brought you stuff like Karin and Sakura flashing their panties during moves.

which is also a stereotype. The series also had General Man Rolento. Litteral Weaboo Sadom.

SF3 had Ninjas. Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. And Jojo characters.

SFIV had Fedor, Mexican Cook Luchas. KOF Lady. More JoJo Characters.

SF characters are very often based off of very obvious character types and taken to the extreme. Mika is no different. She is a super exaggerated version of Joshi Wrestlers.

Again, it's not the boobs. It's the butt. Mika's butt goes from nearly uncovered to completely covered with a change to her Story outfit.

I legit thought it was just a joke when I first heard about it. Largely because, as someone who doesn't watch a lot of US TV nowadays, I had just assumed the bar for sexual content could only drop lower as time goes on, thus it wouldn't have been an issue. i.e. I remember the Sable era of WWE way back (a show on a different network with probably an older TV-rating compared to Evo, but with youngsters watching nonetheless).

But if it means Evo can be televised again, then I'd be all for doing whatever it takes to be in compliance (whether that means modifying existing costumes or just adding more conservative ones). For once, SF in America is on a stage no other fighting game has ever been on; if they want to stay there they can no longer have their (cheese)cake & eat it too.
