Why does the “consensus” matter when most gamers are normie casuals? Most gamers consider COD, Madden and Fortnite fine delicacies. Most gamers have no taste. Hellblade 2 is a great game. Its like a Quantic Dream game with way more gameplay and the best visuals in history in a video game. No one complains about Quantic Dream games for lack of gameplay…

MS was desperate for something to show and ride it out for 3 years. Then right at the end they jumped in to check expectations. They basically wrang it out for hope that games were coming. They knew it was no God of war but happily played it up as their answer to Sony's games. Textbook Microsoft, really.

I remember all the God of War comparisons. Knowing the first game and from what we saw in previews of the second, it was a nonsensical comparison too. It was puzzling, tbh, but your explanation makes sense of it all.

I played in on PC Game Pass and just subbing for a month...I still feel like I got ripped off.

You walk around, look at fucking rocks, match shapes and fight for a min or 2 here and there every hour or so.

The constant chatter is insanely annoying. Just go to YouTube and watch the opening when she is climbing the hill.

I almost turned it off.

I just described about 15 secs of what Hellblade 2 is like.

I tapped out after a few hours.

This is a benchmarking tool, not a videogame.

For as much shit as Redfall gets (deservedly so) it's a better game than Hellblade 2...based on the fact it's actually a game.

Anyone who pays full price for this is a dumbass.

I mean, I played Hellblade 2, the people review bombing TLOU2 didn't. I didn't like HB2 at all. I know you're a fan of it because of the visuals, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to objectively call this game amazing or strong

Agreed. Forza/Halo/Gears are far more important ports.

Though it being UE5 may make the port easier, and given that NT's next project is a long time away, probably makes sense to have them go ahead and make it. I doubt it sells much though, but may be enough to justify the port.

I made that GOTY comment right after playing the incredible combat sequence near the end of the game. I was high out of my mind, and that combat section HIT.

Not GOTY but still easily the best combat sequence I've played all year. Possibly all gen.

Hellblade 1 was a critically acclaimed indie darling when it was exclusive to the PS4.

Was it though? Smells like fanfic.

Neither game was any better received than the other and both received an identical aggregate score of around 8/10, which is fine but not up in there with acclaimed darlings by any metric.

The first game was praised for its approach to tackling a sensitive subject mater, and while its sequel was more polarising with a wider spread of higher and lower scores, if it was the darling of anyone it was merely graphics aficionados because it offered very little of substance on any level beyond visuals.

The only outlier here was the xbox rating for the first game the year following the original PC/ps4 release, aggregating a fair bit higher than each of the other 3 platforms it released on. Maybe that's reason some remember it as an indie darling when half the reviewers gave it 9/10 or better.

My take is maybe when you're a small outfit and you drop a game it just hits different with the public than when a multi-trillion dollar company buys you out, funds you, gives you your own mocap stage and parades your title as the system seller for many, many years, raising expectations into the stratosphere and piling pressure onto the whole dev process.
