Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

I thought that I didn’t initially like the scarcity of materials and stuff in the game.

What I found, though, is that it makes pretty much anything you find in the open world extremely exciting and encourages lots of exploration. And I look forward to every single battle I see because it means I could get some materials.

I don’t think the system is perfect, but I don’t dislike it as much as I initially did

You need resources to upgrade between tiers too. The Adra, there's different kinds of Adra required depending on tiers, it's like you can use 3 of a lesser Adra to make a next tier one, but you're gonna need a lot of those and they're not easy to come by.
Oh yeah i get all that. I have been crafting the items you need to upgrade between tears. It does really help to explore and find as much as you can to get the items you need!.

In the third area and still havent found a weapon better than this lightning pistol from the first zone.

Im not exploring all that much though, just finishing all missions and moving on.

Story really isn't hooking me though, only reactive thing I've seen is getting lil blue dude lynched. And the 2 guy companions are the most boring pieces of cardboard I've ever met, they don't ever really say anything meaningful or with emotion.

Game is gorgeous and damn fun to play though

Its just kinda funny. Obsidian, a studio known for great writing above all else, made a game that has absolutely great FPS Combat for a fantasy RPG, and a complete lackluster story.

Its hard not to think that if they changed the tone of the world (more like the first trailer), and brought back Chris Avallone to write the story, this would have been a truly great experience. As it sits now. Its solid, but I don't think too many folks will put this at the top of their favorite games list.

I don't understand the exploration stuff people are praising, are we so long gone from a decent game with one that people think this is good?
This is up there with the laziest exploration design I have ever encountered.

"Let's hide a chest... UNDER THE WATER!"
"Let's hide a chest... behind this breakable wall"
"Let's hide a chest... where it looks like someone could fall to their death"
"Let's hid....."

Fuck it, it's just the same bullshit ubisoft like 300 trillion chests of junk, iron, leather and gems EVERYWHERE.
I'm 10 hours in and have not found a unique or useable item I haven't already bought from a store or looted from a quest boss/mob.

Seriously is the bar so low that them jamming chests around every corner and hearing that twinkle noise is good?
Not only are modern devs so bad at it's design, the modern audience is there fit to praise it.

Good lord, what happened to less is more?
Also what else is there to explore other than finding chests?

Edit: Combat is.... passable, playing as a Wizard and have tried all the other weapon types so it's nice to be able to use anything I want.
Hits with melee don't feel like they connect though, like I'm whacking a hologram.
For me it’s just that I’m having fun with it. There’s a lot of stuff to find and quite a few ways they hide things.

Also you can turn off that loot sound as well as the light beam coming off the chests in the settings. I have that plus the icons off so you have to spot the breakable walls and can’t just hear nearby chests.

edit: also I’m unclear what you even mean by your complaint about unique items? Very few are for sale and yeah the ones you find are generally looted from unique enemies.

The main story is nothing special yeah.

I enjoy some conversation choices though, like that Oracle with the mechanical giant
They clearly wanted me fight him, had the attack choice throughout the whole conversation. But I just kept going, diplomatic, and after helping him to power it up the machine failed, then he wanted to use my godlike soul to get it working… I convinced him to use his own godlike soul instead lol, so I used the device to fry him, then broke the machine by overloading it and walked away. Satisfying!

One thing I dont like about Avowed is how women roast men constantly for their presumably incompetence. It's baffling that they keep doing the same thing over and over throughout the game with multiple characters.

It really breaks the immersion when it comes to the narrative, Obsidian needs to hire better writers for their next games

I mean there’s one in the first area where the man is “right” and the woman eventually agrees to apologize to him.

But I do find the dialog and personalities kind of shitty for the women overall. Everyone is like a snarky “modern TV show” woman and it gets old.

What the hell are you doing? I'm level 12, like 2/3 through the 2nd map and got like 10 unique weapons so far, not even counting the other uniques.
Did you not explore anything? :D

Uniques are not legendary. Uniques are weapons that have some extra passive buff applied to them.

The weapon I'm using was also a unique, I just carried it over the tiers to Legendary cause I like the flame effect and its passive.

Spoilers about main story at the end of the second area:

So, I was doing the main quest and during it Steel Garrote burned down Fior. But I remember seeing an achievement about saving the town and I was wondering what did I miss? I never went to the SG base behind the waterfall that rangers mentioned. Should I go there and somehow prevent them from burning down the town?

I'm not sure that is preventable.

It's part of the main story.

edit: Based on what I'm seeing in later areas I mean, I haven't looked up achievement guides for the game yet.

When I'm taking about economy it is about buying/selling, not breaking down and crafting. I don't have a problem with crafting/upgrading either. The prices for buying are jacked up.
I’ve had around 10k currency at one point and I’m half way through the 2nd area.

There's a cave with steel garrote hiding in it, if you killed them before hand you'll save Fior. i actually found the cave by accident and killed them, but if you didn't find the cave, at the end with the ranger traitor quest the traitor tells you she's working with the steel garrote in the cave, and you can side with her and the steel garrote or kill her and them.

One non-unique "exceptional" weapon at a vendor in that area will cost 7.2k of that 10k. I agree with SEGAvangelist SEGAvangelist that it is better just to upgrade. Saving the coin for potions, lockpicks and such.

Yeah I do the same, they aren’t unique weapons that I’ve seen so I just stick with upgrading.

But I’ve had enough coin to do so if I wanted.

Ended up instead buying awakened Adra.

Giatta is pretty. Pretty much every character in this game is flawed.
Yeah, I agree and also that's about as far as I can tell too. There are a few women that are "okay". But for the most part, I don't think it's a matter of the women specifically - the models in general just aren't amazing. The ones that are less human, like Kai, look better IMO.

I meant flawed in character, but yeah... the character models are the weakest thing about the graphics.

I've made it to the 4th area. Pretty cool! So many beetles... I've done a few bounties and explored around for a bit, but still have a ton left to do, and that's before working on the main quest.

I'm still rocking the unique frost wand I got in the 3rd area, but have upgraded it to legendary. Off-hand is a unique book that has some killer spells in it. I'm especially loving the "summon a purple ball that rains down missles" spell. Also getting good milage out of an upgraded gravity spell (can't remember the name) that causes enemies to float for a bit.

Location 3 plot and choices:

Holy shit that was one of the most difficult choices I've had to make. Destroy the ruins for but have the plague keep spreading or stop the plague but kill an unknown number of people in the village.

I chose to destroy the ruins, at least it gives the people a chance to fight. Agreeing with the inquisitor, who I've been antagonizing since the star, felt like a real devil's bargain.

Welp.......just finished up Emerald Stair and....

I had the option to waste that nasty Captain Aelfyr bitch and I took it. That was satisfying. Not a easy boss fight though.

I'm playing as passively where possible,
so I let her live for roleplaying's sake, otherwise I wanted to burn her too.

Thought about that for a second, but there's only so much smugness I can take from a ginger bitch.

Double guns are pretty cool. Using Caerocs Pride and The Disappointer. I bought The Disappointer while not seeing the -10 % damage debuff, but one of the enchantments you can get for it replaces that debuff with a +10 damage boost. So not so disappointing anymore. The enchantments is also called Tender Love and Care, lol.

The Disappointer is a gun from Pillars of Eternity and the description was this

The Disappointer was touted as a powerful, reliable weapon, but it has consistently failed every one of its unfortunate owners.
This is a terrible weapon that disappoints anyone who uses it. The gun appears well-made at first glance, but closer scrutiny reveals poor design and shoddy craftsmanship. Those who aren't fooled by its appearance still occasionally attempt to use it just to see if maybe the whole thing was made to look this way as an elaborate ruse, hoping that it is an artifact of extreme power, crafted by a master who desired to conceal its remarkable nature. It wasn't, and it isn't.

The enchantment turning it from a disappointment to something nice and that they included this gun in the first place is pure obsidian geeking.

Third area imho is the best area yet. Nice large mobs of enemies, great looking environments, interesting side quests, and some rewarding loot for a change.

I’m still not sure I am understanding how the economy in this game is supposed to work. Maybe you’re only supposed to find 1-2 good weapons and armor and stick with it all game upgrading it. There’s barely any interesting weapons and money/materials is very hard to come by. And since enemies don’t respawn, you can’t really farm them.

Also I think I will start buying spells outright on the level up tree so I can wield dual pistols and drop this dumb spell book.

Maybe that explaiins why it looks so bad 🤣 especially next to the Caeroc which has a real nice design to it.

I do feel like they did not get the difficutly quite right. Playing on Path of the Damned since very early on and while the first zone was pretty challenging until the very end, the second zone is not so it seems. When I first arrived, it was and many quests marked 3 skulls, but after doing just a couple of them, all the skull ratings are gone, the main story quest is down to 1 skull, and I feel like I'm tearing through everything. Otherwise, things going well.
