Has the Xbox Series already cemented itself as the worst Xbox generation in history?

What’s Microsoft’s worst generation?

Xbox one for me. It had better exclusives than series consoles but that's it. It was far weaker than ps4, it ruined the reputation of the brand( not just the e3 2013 conference but the whole generation itself slowly eroded any good will Xbox had). It was the begining of the downfall of Xbox and its effects are noticeable now.

Series, while a bad generation, is slightly better than one. The console is as powerful as the competitor, the future Outlook of the company( not the hardware) looks good. The one thing it is lacking in is exclusives but ms first party studios themselves have released some good games, age of mythology retold being a more recent example.

Xbox One was ill-conceived, underpowered, had the darn Kinect etc. But it had a good launch lineup and decent third party exclusives as well as some good first party games. Hardware wise they turned it around with One S and X. And then there was HOPE for a brighter future with the acquisitions they started to make late in that generation. Now we know what that turned into which for me as an Xbox first gamer since 2002 makes this current gen the worst Xbox gen. Period. And the last one for me probably.

The Xbox One hardware was fairly mediocre until the One X was released. At least Series generation has Series X from the very beginning. Quick Resume is a nice addition that Xbox One didn’t have. Xbox One probably had more exclusives (I don’t know the exact number for each generation) but most of them weren’t great. To me, maybe only Rise of the Tomb Raider was great. But it only remained exclusive for a year. Microsoft’s first party output is, or will be, better this generation. Other than the Forza Horizon games, Indiana Jones is probably better than any first party game Microsoft released last generation. But of course, now Microsoft’s 1st party aren’t going to be exclusive anymore so that kind of detracts from the Series generation appearing to be anything unique or special.

Xbox 360 was definitely the best Xbox generation, even if MS made some really odd decisions (HDD being optional, and that focus shift to Kinect).

IIRC third party games on Xbox one were often lower resolution.
And I don't think people buy consoles based on first party (unless it's Nintendo).

Well, I've bought each of the previous generations. There's no need to buy this one. If the software makes the console, I don't know how anyone can argue that it's not the worst. Every game by MS this generation can be played without buying an MS console.

I’ve been in the Xbox ecosystem since the first one. I could see how one can consider the current one as the weakest especially if you measure it by game quality and innovation (which is mostly an issue for the whole generation, see the equivalent PlayStation topic), but in the end Xbox defines itself more by system features than game generations. We had online gaming, digital market, Kinect/NUI (kind of an outlier), multi-tasking systems, and now game pass.
Each phase brought something different to the game, I can’t really say one was worse than the others (yes I enjoyed the Kinect part). But then as time goes by I barely play any major game any more, just killing time in F2P or minor games that could run on a phone (and often do)

OG Xbox was my favourite console of the 6th gen.
360 is one of my favourite consoles of all time.

I didn't even bother buying an Xbox One, and now that their games are all coming to PS5/Switch 2, I won't be getting a Series either.
If I had to pick which was worse, it's probably the Xbone just for derailing everything. The Series just continued the slide.

I wasn't commenting on the quality of the games, just the incorrect claim that they released "nothing for nigh on 2 years":

And what was the PS5's killer app at launch? Spider-Man Miles Morales? 🤷‍♂️

You could also play Infinite and Forza on PC.

PS5 had some exclusives from launch. Astro Bot, Demon's Souls were only playable on PS5. Rift Apart and Returnal both came out a few months later which were PS5 only as well. Miles Morales was actually better than Spiderman 1 because it was less bloated, I think it was a good launch game. Horizon, GT7 came out early 2022 when the PS5 was just a year old, and Ragnarok would follow. These weren't playable on anything else than PS5 and PS4 and obviously far better on PS5, you had to purchase a Playstation for these games. And I figure quite a bit likely did.

If its about console adoption, day one PC isn't the best idea.

Xbox One has an amazing catalog of games and the Xbox One X was a great console they
really turned it around in the end

Series took that great start and did basically nothing with it 90% of what is good about the series
was already done with Xbox One X

Xbox One X is one of the greatest consoles of all time so I can't vote Xbox One even if the start was a joke

Series is by far the worst

It's the most disappointing for me, considering what it could have been.

The early mistakes of the Xbox One have been well covered, but they did course correct and end the generation in a much better place with the One X, early days of game pass and the return of back compat. It was a great springboard to build upon with the Series X.

But then Halo was delayed and it felt like they just kind of... put their feet up and relied on the One X era goodwill to carry them for years. Launching the new generation with the same old UI really encapsulated that mindset, and they never really got beyond it until they conceded it wasn't working in 2024.

I voted for Xbox original. I didn't own the console in 2000s, but looking at it back I don't see enough games, which could have attracted my attention.

Xbox 360 was good; Xbox One and Series are on a par in terms of [high] quality and quantity.

What ?
- JSRF
- Panzer dragoon Orta
- Sega GT
- Shenmue 2
- DOA 3
- DOA Ultimate
- Otogi 1 & 2
- KOTOR
- "Real" versions of Splinter cell franchise
- Halo 1 & 2 (2 basically kick-started online play on consoles as we know it today -Dreamcast excluded)
- PGR 1 & 2
- Ninja Gaiden/black (still one of the best action games available)
- MechWarrior
- Fable
- Chronicles of Riddick EFBB
- Crimson skies
- The best version of Outrun 2
- Gun Valkyrie
- Kingdom under fire + KUF heroes
- Phantom crash

I mean, the list isn't exactly PS2 levels of awesomeness but there were lots of good exclusive games (with most of them still looking and playing good to this day).

Yes, I have yet to play Shenmue 2 and NG Black.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was good.

Halo 1 & 2 didn't age well.

The other games from this list don't appeal to me.

Xbox Series was a disaster from day one, Halo Craig, releasing the console without a single first exclusive, droughts of more than a year without releasing a AAA of its own, terrible marketing, etc... in the end it has ended the brand and forced it to follow the path of Sega.

And Xbox was a real powerhouse. It had a harddrive, it had online, it had some of the best games of that generation. It was an experience in itself to use it.

What's criteria of a bad generation? Hardware sales? Games?

It depends on who's talking. Everyone has their own way of sizing it up.

For me, I base my answer on the decisions MS made that killed their console hardware as a competitive force. Those moves (acquisitions, no more exclusives) all happened this generation, although the groundwork had been laid in the previous one.

I also base it on Xbox gamers themselves. I can just look at them and see which generation has been the worst. They were still holding their heads up during the Xbox One gen. Despite the awful reveal, they still had things to be proud of and reason for hope. Some good exclusives early on, Phil Spencer was here to save the day, they had a good BC program going, and GamePass was rising up. But this gen, especially in the past year, Xbox fan morale has tanked. Sure, there are still some Xbox fans who are sticking with them and others who try to put a positive spin on things, but most of them seem disappointed, deflated, or resigned. It was very easy to find enthusiastic Xbox gamers in the Xbox One era, and very difficult today.

Bolded are playable today and are even better than on the OG hardware.

Only problem is online play doesn't work anymore (or on the OG hardware either), but LAN play still does work.

I was about to say Series X but Microsoft's hardware has actually been reliable for the last two generations. The 360 obviously had the RROD, but no one talks about how cheap Microsoft was with the DVD drive where it would scratch discs if you ever so slightly moved the console. The OG Xbox had verious issues with Thomson drives and poorly made capacitors. It's weird how they can nail the hardware, but fall short in the software department.

Xbone is still the worst, the collapsing we see now it's not because of the Series (X at least, Series S adds to the problem, but whatever), it's just the fallout from the Xbone gen that keeps dragging them down + the failure of Uncle Phil plans betting everything on GP while Xbox as a platform goes down in flames

Xbone had legit games the first few years, series did not.

I no longer need the console, so yeah.
There has been some great games but I play them all on PC.
Forget about our consoles but please support us on PC. Yeah it's been pretty clear that's what they're going for. Perhaps paid astroturf will make the difference this time.

True. Xbox One wins on sheer amount of exclusives, but nobody cared back then. The narrative was that Xbox had no games because they weren't aping what Sony was doing.

Gears and Halo also went full soy during that generation which didn't help. Forza was still good, but they devalued the games with bi-yearly releases.

They weren't as good as Sony at games during the Xbox One era either, but the gap wasn't as big as it is today. Mattrick knew you needed to launch a console with games. Phil Spencer, who has had like 15 years to course correct, couldn't manage to do that. He even said himself, "Xbox lives or dies by Halo"....relied too much on it, and as we saw, Halo didn't do well on Series X and that was kind of it.

At the end of the day it always comes back to games, something that the Xbox Series consoles is the absolute worst at compared to the other consoles. Easily the biggest disaster in Xbox history and the reason they are going third party. Phil had the opportunity to fix things in 2013-2019 to plant the seeds of success, but he just doubled down on Gears, Halo, Forza, and let some of those studios really fester. Bungie leaving was the earliest nail in the coffin.

Yeah, the situation with Series consoles inexcusable. Still waiting for Fable and Perfect Dark. Phil's out of touch ass thought Hellblade 2 was a compelling exclusive. Avowed is finally coming but that's another soy-ass looking game. Don't even get my started on their love letter to the south. Absolutely baka.

Putting their games on PC was the beginning of the end for me. That's when I started caring less about Xbox hardware. Consoles are nice for simplicity, but you really need compelling exclusives you can't play anywhere else to draw you in.
