Rumor: Microsoft plans price increase for Game Pass in March 2025; Update: Not a global change, see updated OP

Did a little bit of research.

"The reported increase is due to the cost to official resellers and this is being misinterpreted by some Brazilian media and channels. What will really happen is that the prices that resellers charge for gift cards outside of the Microsoft Store will practically equalize. This means that prices will increase for those who buy Xbox Game Pass subscriptions through VPN here, since in India, for example, the increase will be quite high."

So it sounds like just the regional pricing of various places are increasing (perhaps due to vpn usage) and the price increase is more of a standardization. But that wouldn't get too many clicks here probably.

Where is that quote coming from?

In an interview with Windows Central, Spencer revealed that while Xbox Game Pass is "financially viable," the company spends "over a billion dollars a year supporting third-party games coming into Game Pass." He then touches on the strategic reasons why Xbox spends so much on its service which is often regarded as one of the best deals in gaming.

Too bad because it's already too expensive. Especially on PC where the platform of choice is steam and it feels disconnected of the rest when not on steam. GP should merge with steam, I think it would further rise the interest of subscribing.

The people who defend gamepass always use this excuse 'It's cheaper than buying a game for 70 dollars!!!!'. Well see there's a flaw with ur argument and that flaw is that i don't pay 70 dollars for games because i wait for sales and discounts which happen nonstop and i always get games at ridiculously good prices. I got persona 3 remake at Christmas for like 25 bucks i believe, i also got metaphor refantazio for 40 i believe, etc etc. So i'm getting games at discounts while owning them instead of paying for a subscription service that provides me nothing cause i own nothing. I'll take owning my games over a subscription service 100 out of 100 times ty very much.

You only own them if you buy physical. Otherwise you only license them 😉

Context should probably be added to OP Daniel_Mallorca1985 Daniel_Mallorca1985 .

Even after he’s clarified, OP hasn’t been updated.

Really?

Called it when COD went into Gamepass. 10 bucks for PC Gamepass is honestly highway robbery. I'll still rob Microsoft if it goes to 15

The thing about projects like these is that you will always hear about how it's the best it's ever been... and then they shut it down. It doesn't take much to keep up appearances.

Do you not find value in playing the games?

For me I prefer GP if it's an option since it's much cheaper. A $40 game costs me the same as like 5 months of GP. I rarely ever replay games so one playthrough costs me $40 as opposed to maybe $5 for most GP games. And if I'm buying that game digitally like on Steam then I can't even sell the game so that $40 is definitely gone. Even worse if I don't like the game after a few hours and I feel like that money was totally wasted whereas with a GP game I can just delete and download something else.

I could understand an argument of GP vs physical, since they at least retain value (especially with Switch games which I have a large collection of) and can be sold but with so many people going digital, I don't see the benefit of buying a license to a game rather than just "renting" it through GP.

New releases for $50 usually can be had on PC side. No idea about GamePass at $30.
Even on console, prices for games sold at retail across Europe are usually fairly competitive. I preordered XCX for €46 (sales tax / VAT included) from Amazon and got KCD2 for €50 just this week from a local mom and pop video game store (my copy even shipped early and got to play it before the official release).

Really?

Literally never said that man but i know you love to misinterpret people to make a point because you love gamepass and love defending it. I was speaking from my own personal thoughts about it which i tend to do with all of my comments on here.

To me gamepass has value in two areas.

1: If you have a family and you wanna get gamepass for your kids because you're saving a boatload of money and providing your kids alot of gaming content at an affordable rate which makes sense for a family who's on a budget or just in general.

2: If you don't care about owning physical media and you just want a wide range of games to play and have enough spare time to try a bunch of games to justify the cost of it.

I see what you're saying though and i agree with you in the aspect that if you like playing games, don't care about owning them, and only play them 1 time then gamepass makes sense you're correct.

with the added disclaimer that you are only renting the games, lol
I hardly ever replay games. So I’m good. If game pass wasn’t a thing, I’d just subscribe to GameFly.

Newsflash, I’d say over 90% of games aren’t worth my time. Then of those 10% worth it, only a few are worth finishing. Then even fewer are worth their cost. And even less are worth playing more than once.

I could see a class action lawsuit for those that stacked years when the games begin to dwindle or if they find some way out of Day 1.

Stackers are their biggest problem, which is why they're no longer letting you stack so long now. The day they limited the stack is when people should have perked up.

I think GamePass Ultimate will be 25 dollars per month by the end of the year.

Edit: Would not be surprised if GamePass Ultimate was 30 dollars by the end of the generation as GamePass itself rises to something closer to 20.

I don't think it'll go to 25 in one jump, but I'm guess if this rumor is true that it'll be a jump to 22 or 23 dollars and then there will be another jump in the fall right before CoD comes out.

If I nail this, what another marvelous prediction by me... Even if its like 24 dollars, ultimately, I'm going to take credit for this one lol.

GamePass Core and PC will likely be getting increases here too.

Based on what comments have said since this topic was made, this seems like region specific to curb vpn usage, not global (or US).

Still, unconfirmed and should be taken as gossip until official.

yeah good luck then if that 1% isnt on gamepass, you'll be paying and still be subbing on the side.
if you dont play many games, gamepass makes even less sense.

From Xbox tax, to COD tax :messenger_beaming:

No one can act surprised about this, you don't just give away the biggest selling game every year for pennies and no, "mtx will compensate for the lost sales" doesn't work when the conception of mtx was to get more money, no less

I bought 3 years worth of GPU back in 2022. Probably won't re-up when it expires later this year.

At this point I'd rather just pay for a month here and there when games come out that I'm interested in, or just buy games outright with as cheap as they can be found on PC if you know where to look.

I got out of all subscriptions a long time ago.

I'm sorry for all the indie games that I won't be buying because I can no longer try out for free, but I'd rather have the license for the stuff that I already know I want to play.
