Welp, I'll run the 30cap.

Would you play any console COD at 30fps if they gives the option?

It's not the same a game at 60 with little drops (Bayonetta X360 for example) than a game with unlocked framerate like Second Son or Killzone Shadowfall.

People is really obsessed this times with this.
Take Crysis 3, take a good GPU and try a constant 60fps experience, good luck.

Drops a bit at times, but generally you can say that it's 60 and is quite noticeable (60).

Oh wow, that is truly unfortunate. :(

You do realize he just described most games that are marketed as running at 60 frames, right? Also, you don't know how big the drops are.

For me unlocked frame rate usually feels "chuggy" but I'm actually pleased that they give users the option to run it at 30vs unlocked.

not really. these words can mean a variety of things. from totally playable and very enjoyable to a bad case where you have dips exactly when you dont want to have any.
but yes, if this comment is true, 60 locked it may be not.

Of course you are, it's a PlayStation exclusive. :p

Of course you aren't, it's a Playstation exclusive. :p

Am I doing it right?

On a side note, say what you want about me but I have always been consistent. Watch some people flip flop on the frame rate thing when the next big game on their favoured platform fails to be a locked 60fps, or locked 30fps for that matter.

Now I'm trying to get a lock on the expectations for this game, people were expecting this to never drop from 60 like Nintendo first party games?

Meh, most of the concerns center on the so-called "Soap Opera Effect" which occurs because of frame interpolation. With a game running at 60, there is no interpolation, so the "effect" isn't there, it's just a game running without the interruption in motion you see at 30 frames. Whatever the case, I - unfortuanately - anticipate the increased use of words like "filmic" to describe games that made the artistic choice to include more effects at the cost of frame rate.
Meh, if that suits their creation better, than so be it.

I dont think anyone is advocating for 24FPS, but 30FPS just doesn't have that "1.5speed" look to it that 60FPS does. I love playing action games and racing games at 60FPS, sure, but these games are high octane and constantly in motion/action. TLoU(and Uncharted by extension) play slower and often use dybmaic camera angles, movie like lighting, and other cinematic visual traits that games like MGS:R simply dont(or would probably ever) utilize. ND isn't shy about wanting to create the mindset that you are "playing a movie", it's in part what has made them huge this last gen and I would argue their the only dev out there so far that has really captured that sense. To some, 60FPS can feel too "Hobbit 48FPS" like. As someone who loved Uncharted 3(and I do mean loved), the clip of the desert in 60FPS realized years ago always felt "off" to me. ND went great lengths to produce that "playable movie feel" for that chapter specifically(panning camera shots, etc) but the clip of Drake at 60FPS felt to visually jarring when compared to all the other effects used to produce movie like visuals. Frankly, I didn't like it and dont know if you could ever get me to play UC3 at 60FPS.

Really it's a matter of taste and choice. So much praise for TLoU at 60FPS has come from developers I trust that I honestly want to see what it's like. I might love 60FPS, but I love the idea that I can go back and choose my preferred setting. Much respect to the developer that finds a way to make the experience great for all fans.

But the thing is, nobody says TLOU:R has "unlocked framerate" it's 60 with little drop, as 90% of 60fps console games.

what do they mean by character textures have been increased by a factor of four

It means that if some object used texture with 512x512 pixel size on PS3, on PS4 it uses 1024x1024. When that larger texture is put on the position on the old one, it should showcase 4 times more details.
PhRTf.png

However this doesn't mean that the game will suddenly become better everywhere, I presume that not all textures will get bump, and some will continue to look blurry because of the "art style" in which they were created. Its important to notice that even the original textures will look better on PS4 because of the resolution bump.

PS3 had less than 256MB of viable VRAM, so PS4 will have field day on this game texture-wize. :D Larger resolution textures, better streaming, looser LOD settings [so that more gameworld can recieve HQ textures]... Cant wait to play it! :D

Doesn't CoD multiplayer go over 60FPS, rather than drop?

You are thinking of COD Ghosts and some apparently weird framerate.

But I am talking about COD multiplayer in general, tends to be 60fps locked with everything going on, on Xbox 360 that was the case anyway.

Really strange that they're offering a 30fps lock, there's only one conclusion and it's already been made here.

what do they mean by character textures have been increased by a factor of four

Textures have four times the resolution in cut-scene character models (it was the same case with Uncharted 3), and now those are used during gameplay.

People are overreacting so much. To expect it to stay at 60fps during every point of the game is unrealistic, and saying that the only reason they have included a 30fps option is because the framerate fluctuates is ridiculous.

Let's just wait for the DF analysis, guys.

If you can lock it at 30 that means ND couldn't get it to consistently stay at 60 (probably during intense fighting scenes). Still, impressive (and disappointing that a console with 8.5x the memory and 1500GFlops more power can't get this last gen game at 1080p60).

As far as I know the only reason a developer provides a 30 fps lock is if the frame rate has some dips. You people saying the 30fps lock is for cinematic reasons make no sense to me. Or my sarcasm radar is severely broken.

Well your console warrior mentality has cost you plenty of time on this forum lately so are you really surprised people don't remember your name.

It does have some dips, though it doesn't sound like they're frequent or severe. Whatever the case, we'll find out soon enough.

We really are at odds here (not really) because I've never seen a game that - to me - didn't look better at 60 than at 30. Even if you don't like the look, I just can't see why you would put yourself at a disadvantage by lowering the frame rate and increasing controller lag. Even on Sniper Elite 3 I had to turn off the 3D mode because the drop in frames destroyed the feel of the game. And I only bought the damn thing because I hadn't played a 3D game in ages. Whatever though, opinions. Enjoy the game (whatever the frame rate).

I wouldn't worry about the 30 frame lock option. Didn't 'Infamous: Second Son' get that featured added during the large update? I guess its for folks who just don't like it.

Yes, but it was a much improved alternate. I didn't have issues with the first aiming although I felt something was wrong, but when you I tried the alternate (which should be default btw) I noticed just how bad the first one was.

I'm all for giving gamers a choice, and in this case it might be just that, but UC3's aiming was more of a fix than actually giving players the option.
Still a matter determined by taste. I never opted to play through with the patch and found what was there to be fine. I decided to stick with the default instead of switch.

I agree with your statement. Could this be the first case that "a 30 fps lock" is offered for those who prefer 30 fps over 60 fps? We be interesting if they went this route.
