What I find interesting about this poll is I have always felt this forum has way more PlayStation fans than Xbox fans (which obviously makes sense since PS is killing Xbox in sales since forever)

Majority of voters are most likely disappointed (former) Sony fans like myself. I was full blown Sony fanboy back in PS3 days. PS4 gen was ok but definitely had worse output and with PS5 disconnect between Sony and their fans is the biggest ever.

But hey, games and consoles are selling well so it's all ok!

Sony these days is like having a popular government with zero opposition...

They don't have to be the best, because there's no competition (i.e. XBOX 360/Gears of War).

Also, using fiat dollars to claim their profits are "higher" than ever before is a fool's errand.

During the PS3/4 era a house was A LOT cheaper (let alone groceries and other stuff), so having slightly higher fiat numbers during the PS5 era doesn't mean they're more profitable. In fact, I would argue the opposite.

You guys need to learn what inflation is. Back in 2020 FED printed 10 trillion dollars out of thin air, more than they had printed during the previous 200 years. Back in 2008-2009 (Lehman Brothers meltdown) they had barely printed 1 trillion.

1 dollar is not 1 dollar. It keeps getting weaker over time. Too bad the majority doesn't realize that, so it's very easy to fool the masses with cooked up numbers.

Sony feels completely disconnected from PlayStation fans lately... even Apple communicates more with their audience. This generation lacks the excitement we saw before, and I think it’s due to a lack of personality in their press releases and fewer major first-party blockbusters. During the PS3 and PS4 eras, they were dropping hit after hit alongside huge third-party titles. Now, they’ve gone so quiet that we assumed they were working on something big. Instead, it turns out they’ve been stuck on failed GaaS projects, which, in my opinion, has really deflated the Sony fanbase.

I say this as a PS5 Pro, PS Portal and PSVR2 owner. I'm on board with what they put out but man there is such a lack of excitement right now.

GT7 is the best game they ever made and it looks stunning with PS5 pro and even more with VR2 headset.

I never say buy a console for 1 game. But fuck if there is a game that is even close to that saying, it's GT7.

Titles like God of War, Gran Turismo, Spiderman, Horizon, Helldivers, Astro Bot, etc are all selling vastly better than their games of prior generations.

Killzone 2 didn’t even crack half a million NPD its first month, HFW has sold over 7 million.

But as an enthusiast, imagine a generation where we had those games plus releases from Naughty Dog, BluePoint, a Venom expansion, a Media Molecule project, and other titles that add depth to the first-party lineup beyond just the heavy hitters. Sony’s GaaS push has sidelined several major first-party studios for half a decade or more, and I’m convinced that if those studios had been releasing games, the OP’s discussion wouldn’t even exist... there’d be no need to talk about it.

Games are taking longer to make, and ND released their latest game in 2020. BluePoint released a launch game. Sony has a venom game in the works, it’s just not dlc. Media molecule has been mia for a long time.

Game development is always messy and we can always play the “what if” game.

What if Sucker Punch didn’t cancel their new ip on ps4? Well it probably wouldn’t have been good and we wouldn’t have gotten Ghost

What if SSM didn’t cancel their new IP on PS4? Same story, no GoW 2018

What if MM didn’t waste an entire gen on Dreams?

Sony’s GaaS push has sidelined several major first-party studios for half a decade or more

It only sidelined Bend studio for that long, Bluepoint has only been working on GaaS for 2 years and ND was never devoting their entire studio to Factions to begin with.

Sony basically had zero meaningful first party for most of the ps1/2 era, you can say all you want that ps3 or ps4 was better based on personal opinion, but how can ps5 be worse?

Pretty much the same here. Hundreds of PS2, PS3, PSP, and Vita games. Even bought PS+ in the very early days when all you got was shovelware and avatars.

PS4 had some bangers like Bloodborne, TLG, Death Stranding, Nioh, and Day's Gone that I really enjoyed as well as PS+ when it was a great value. PS5 has been pretty empty for me other than Returnal which came to PC and PS+ is kind of a joke, being twice as expensive and far less value.

Exactly. Sony, Rockstar, Valve, etc all love modern gaming because they're making money hand over fist through live service games. Enthusiasts don't care about the money when making comparisons.

True, I confused 2021 with 2019, so I thought it was in the tail end. I still think they've moved towards more AAA higher budget releases than a more varied slate of mid to smaller sized budget titles though, and given the larger dev cycles of AAA means they take longer to hit release, first party or not.

Definitely never happened in the PS4 era; it's probably that you didn't realize stuff like Concrete Genie, Monkey King: Hero is Back, MediEvil and Dreams were coming out.

They literally published Concord last year from a studio they unfortunately acquired

I did left Concord out because you then mentioned the GAAS titles, so I assuned you were going on single-player AAA Western games. So, that's one game out all Sony's 2024 games.

and their lack of releases is part of why they money-hatted Stellar Blade + FF7 Rebirth & FF16 (Square Enix now pushing for future entries to release multi-plat).

They did not moneyhat Stellar Blade, it was literally a PlayStation Studios production.

Gran Turismo, Rise of Ronin + Nioh 2 are some of the only Japanese games they've published this gen, with the bulk of their publishing slate and owned devs being western that aren't Team Asobi.

Nioh 2 is not Sony (pretty weird that you count that, but not Stellar Blade), and among stuff that Sony has that it's not Western-made includes Lost Soul Aside, Convalalria and Death Stranding 2 this year.
Also, you were talking about Western vs. Asia output, or AA vs. AAA output? Because here it sounds like you want more Western games from Sony:

Without Cell the PS3 wouldn't have had so many great 1st party exclusives to compensate for the -usually- horrible 3rd party ports.

Cell taught devs discipline. Think of it like the army conscription.

Is it tough? Yes. Will everyone like it? No.

Sony was desperate to prove Cell's value and ND delivered with Uncharted 2.

Maybe Sony execs regret Kutaragi's decisions, but I don't. I have thousands of hours on Uncharted alone (engagement is key), believe it or not.

That wouldn't be the case if the PS3 had been a bland, tasteless, customized PC architecture. Uncharted wouldn't even exist, or it would have been very, very different. That's why the PS3 is a special machine for many of us, but I don't expect everyone to agree with that.
