I did left Concord out because you then mentioned the GAAS titles, so I assuned you were going on single-player AAA Western games. So, that's one game out all Sony's 2024 games.
Nah, moreso that Sony has moved over time to more of their portfolio being bigger budget games, largely made in the west. GAAS being another newer vector to reach sales with larger budget titles. They're not publishing as many mid-size to smaller budget titles as I've seen on PS4 and PS3.

They did not moneyhat Stellar Blade, it was literally a PlayStation Studios production.
Nioh 2 is not Sony (pretty weird that you count that, but not Stellar Blade), and among stuff that Sony has that it's not Western-made includes Lost Soul Aside, Convalalria and Death Stranding 2 this year.
Also, you were talking about Western vs. Asia output, or AA vs. AAA output? Because here it sounds like you want more Western games from Sony:
I counted Nioh 2 because they've been the publisher for worldwide release for both titles during development. I said Sony money-hatted Stellar Blade because it was initially announced as a multi-plat in production before Sony stepped in, and acquired publishing rights with financial support. Those games I listed are because they're fresh in my mind since I've been rounding out my PS2 collection, and I'd like to see them get used. There are non-western IP as well like The Legend of Dragoon, Rogue Galaxy, Soul Sacrifice, Okage: Shadow King, etc. I think they could do something with at lower budgets.

Huh, they used to own only 2 since 2007, and they own only 2 now.
You're right, Polyphony and Team Asobi would still be it, my bad. I had thought they had owned Zener Works and Game Republic back in the past too, but they just worked with them on projects as a publisher.

What time is it?
Sony basically had zero meaningful first party for most of the ps1/2 era, you can say all you want that ps3 or ps4 was better based on personal opinion, but how can ps5 be worse?

The amount of de facto exclusives from 3rd parties on PSX/PS2 negated the need for first party exclusives. That’s not likely to ever happen again due to development costs and how similar modern architectures are but it did make those platforms must have.

The PS5 is fine as is Sony’s strategy given the sales results, but personally I could have stayed on a PS4 Pro and not have missed much this generation. Sure it would be worse experience but if I had nothing to compare it against, I doubt I’d be all that bothered. It’s why I skipped the PS5 Pro and probably will not be there day one for PS6. It’s easy to see why some might not consider the PS5 must have given the Sony’s cross generation and PC/Switch porting strategies.

Not publishing as many of them as in those eras doesn't mean that they stopped doing so altogether. It's not like Astro Bot, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade or Lego Horizon fit either description, and neither does stuff like Lost Soul Aside this year.
I counted Nioh 2 because they've been the publisher for worldwide release for both titles during development.
Not in Japan, in fact, nobody was even aware that Sony was publishing Nioh 1 in the West until 3 months before release.
I said Sony money-hatted Stellar Blade because it was initially announced as a multi-plat in production before Sony stepped in, and acquired publishing rights with financial support.
Which in turn means that it became a first-party production. Just like Aquanaut's Holiday: Hidden Memories on PS3 did; it was originally announced as a third-party game in TGS 2005, and then got re-announced as a SCE Japan Studio production in TGS 2007.
There are non-western IP as well like The Legend of Dragoon, Rogue Galaxy, Soul Sacrifice, Okage: Shadow King, etc. I think they could do something with at lower budgets.
Which I think is fair and something that I agree with (but with other set of IPs). I just don't think going to the very other extreme that Sony only makes GAAS or high budget AAA games is the right way either, simply enough because it's not true.
You're right, Polyphony and Team Asobi would still be it, my bad. I had thought they had owned Zener Works and Game Republic back in the past too, but they just worked with them on projects as a publisher.
Sony was indeed the majority owner (50.5%) of a developer called Deep Space, known for Extermination and Hungry Ghosts, that was closed in 2004.

Without Cell the PS3 wouldn't have had so many great 1st party exclusives to compensate for the -usually- horrible 3rd party ports.

"Necessity is the mother of invention"

Cell taught devs discipline. Think of it like the army conscription.

Is it tough? Yes. Will everyone like it? No.

Sony was desperate to prove Cell's value and ND delivered with Uncharted 2.

Maybe Sony execs regret Kutaragi's decisions, but I don't. I have thousands of hours on Uncharted alone (engagement is key), believe it or not.

That wouldn't be the case if the PS3 had been a bland, tasteless, customized PC architecture. Uncharted wouldn't even exist, or it would have been very, very different. That's why the PS3 is a special machine for many of us, but I don't expect everyone to agree with that.

The problem wasn’t so much how hard it was to program for, it was how long it took them to get it. It was way past the half gen before they started pulling out games. And by then 360 was killing them in all big 3zrd party games.

Thats why people voted the Xbox one the downfall of the Xbox console. HDMI in for tv, mandatory Kinect, severely underpowered….. they made a teeeible mistake.

Strange to see people putting people into two baskets: either you're "objective" (meaning you look at sales data) or you are a "hater." You know guys, there is a third option. Some people are of the opinion that the PS5 gen is weak, compared to earlier gens. They base this opinion on their personal experience with the consoles. You can't negate that opinion by citing sales figures, and calling them names ("haters") just makes you look like a defender.

Even with the ridiculous live service push, I can see PS5 generation receiving a good bunch of Sony's first-party/second-party funded games:

2025: Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Firesprite's new game
2026: Intergalactic, Wolverine, Housemarque's new game
2027: Cory's Barlog new IP, Horizon 3, Stellar Blade 2
2028: Spider-Man 3, TLOU3, new Team Asobi's game

Also, people in this forum have spend years saying that ps4 has no games, and now the same is happening with the ps5. lol
Yup, pretty much. People forget easily.

For 2025: Don't forget to add Lost Soul Aside.

By gawd, I'm so excited about it. People have criticized it over the years for being vaporware, but they forgot to mention that this newcomer Chinese developer Bing Yang's first game, a man who had no experience with the gaming industry and was inspired by footage of Final Fantasy XV around 2014 to start work on Lost Soul Aside. I'm glad to see that Sony, despite having problems, was willing to stick by him for all these years and thanks to their backing of Yang, we're going to experience the closest thing we have to a game version of Final Fantasy Versus XIII that was unfortunately canceled and rebranded to Final Fantasy XV due to mismanagement and ratings concern B.S from Square Enix.

Such a shame a promising game like Scalebound didn't enjoy the same treatment as Lost Soul Aside because Microsoft ended up cancelling it back in 2017 thanks to their executive meddling. If only Sony could have been the ones to help PlatinumGames with the project.

It was hard to program for if you didn't have experience in exotic architectures (Amiga Commodore chipset, DSPs, Transputer, Emotion Engine VUs etc.)

ND pulled it off relatively early (along with other first party devs that have Demoscene roots, such as Housemarque), 3rd party devs (Ubisoft in Far Cry 3 and AC Rogue) around 2012, but by then the PS3 was already weak compared to mid-range PCs.

Cell allowed ND to implement next-gen effects (Depth of Field) that would otherwise require a DX11+ GPU (via compute shaders):

So yeah, PS3 was a tough nut to crack, but it was future-proof in the sense that it wasn't just limited to a DX9/SM3 feature set (RSX).

AMD copied Cell's paradigm shift on their APUs (HSA). HSA/hUMA never took off on PCs (their discrete RAM/VRAM/PCIe roots are too strong), PCs with AMD APUs still emulate 2 discrete RAM pools, but these technologies exist on PS4/5 and are being utilized a lot to make the best use of unified RAM.

The thing is, programming is a lot easier these days compared to 2009 (making an Uncharted 2 engine from scratch would be a lot faster/easier, no assembly required), but creating assets has become a lot harder.

If you ask me, Sony should pull a Nintendo and go back to PS3 production values. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but they could make a lot more games compared to what we have today.

I'd be up for that, too. Maybe not PS3, but PS4. Of course, it will never happen, because the fans would raise hell about the graphics not being top-notch. Sony sure could put out a lot more games, though, and do a lot more creative experimentation, if the budgets were lower.

You’re damn right as its a terrible take
It's not

Did they not just today say that 64% of Microsoft games sold last quarter was on PlayStation?

Only a few of Microsoft games is on PlayStation & this includes Steam & Switch but you don't think these other games were basically PlayStation Exclusives?

Lol

Or I can ask the 70 million plus that's buying & enjoying games on PS5
Sony has 0 competition this gen, ofc console only players gonna gravitate towards it, what else can they do? Stay on a sinking ship called xbox series and watch phil being cuckhold interview after interview? Or should they watch pixels the size of a fist on switch, or soon to be released switch 2 which only gameplay so far looks below what 12yo ps4 was capable of...
Im playstation fanatic, back from psx days so mid 90s, i still got ps4 at my tv but simply cant justify ps5/ps5pr0 purchase with its 2 exclusive AAA great games...( demons souls and astrobot).

In my opinion, outside of some type of a miracle in the next few years, the answer is definitely "yes". Particularly with the news of Bend's and Bluepoint's projects being canned.

There's been some good/great games, but just no where near the level of Sony's past generations thus far.

Personally, I'd rank the generations as such:

  1. Playstation 2
  2. Playstation 4
  3. Playstation 3
  4. Playstation
  5. Playstation 5
Look's like with Forza horizon 5 and the entire Xbox exclusive library in the way that miracle happened. Best ever playstation generator baby.
